Trailer Park: Keeping It Real

They say truth is stranger than fiction. To that I say "you obviously haven't seen Naked Lunch," but reality is certainly a fertile ground for film makers and today we've got five trailers for films based, to varying degrees, on real events.
The Perfect Game
I've never enjoyed watching sports so baseball movies usually leave me cold, but this one has a couple of things going for it: a true tale of a bunch of kids rising up from poverty to become world champions, and former drug culture icon Cheech Marin playing a priest. Based on true events, a former coach for the St. Louis Cardinals (Clifton Collins Jr.) takes a group of poor Mexican kids under his wing and teaches them the fine art of baseball, which ultimately leads them to the 1957 Little League World Series. There are the usual sports metaphors: "Love ain't like baseball," says Collins' character. "Yes it is," replies one of his bright eyed proteges. I'm teetering between cute and cringe-inducing on that one, but this kind of rags to riches story is pretty appealing and the period setting is pretty cool. The Perfect Game hits theaters on August 8.
'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2' Moves Up Its Release Date

It used to be that The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 was schedule to go head-to-head with Pineapple Express. In one corner was the film that has one heck of a pair of magic pants, that no matter how skinny, curvy, tall, or short you are, they just fit perfectly, like a glove, and bond you to your friends stretched across the country and globe (and this time, different colleges). In the other corner was Pineapple Express, the flick that revels in weed, murder, men-on-the-run, and one heck of a catchy trailer song.Add to that The Perfect Game, which also comes out on August 8, and it looks like a varied triple-header -- one that I think wouldn't have much opening weekend overlap. Still, to get a head up on the competition, Ace Showbiz reports that those Traveling Pants will now hit the screens two days earlier, on August 6. WB distribution president Dan Fellman explains: "It gives us a couple days of extra summer play time. So it just looked like a smart thing to do."
Do you think it will make a difference for the young girl box office? I think it's safe to say that neither of the other two contenders will pull in the same audience, aside from some small overlap.
Clifton Collins Jr. Finds 'The Perfect Game'

Sixteen years ago, Clifton Collins Jr. had his first movie role as "Carlos' Friend #2" in Lawrence Kasdan's Grand Canyon -- and it wasn't his last numero dos role. He was also "Vato #2" in Menace II Society and "Jarhead #2" in One Tough Bastard. Since those days, he's moved out of the number realm with a lot of side-work in high profile movies like Traffic, Capote and Babel. But personally, I always remember him from his crazy drug-dealing Rupert Guest from The Rules of Attraction. Having just wrapped some films like Sunshine Cleaning, he's now got some starring nibbles with the true, feel-good story about Mexican Little League all-stars called The Perfect Game.Collins is getting to go beyond his ne'er-do-well acting chops by leading the film as Cesar Faz, a baseball player who returns to Mexico after being defeated by racism in the Major Leagues. There, he becomes coach of a youth team and ends up leading them to the Little League World Series in 1957, where they won 4-0 over La Mesa, California. The baseball feature is being directed by William Dear, the man behind Harry and the Hendersons and Angels in the Outfield, from a script by W. William Winokur. The Mexico shoots have been completed, and the production will begin filming in Los Angeles on June 15 with a supporting cast of: Cheech Marin, Emilie de Ravin, Lou Gossett Jr., Bruce McGill and Patricia Manterola. As for the kids, they include Nacho Libre youngin' Moises Arias and invincible hero Hayden Panettiere's younger brother, Jansen.
