A Shiny New Trailer for 'The Surrogates'

2009 is clearly the year of the cyborgs, and with its fall release date, The Surrogates is clearly aiming to be the thoughtful one of the bunch. A new trailer has hit the net on MySpace's Trailer Park, but it's refusing to play or embed, so I've borrowed the embed from TrailerAddict (who apparently took it from IGN) all so you could watch it bug free ... but if you want bigger versions, I encourage you to pop over to MySpace or IGN if only to thank them for hosting it.
The Surrogates doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look particularly enticing either. Last year, some really creepy set photos showed up online, and I was hoping that we'd get a movie that contrasted the make-believe world of surrogates with a reality that was ugly and gruesome. I still haven't read the Robert Vendetti comic on which its based, but I got the impression (or perhaps hoped) that there was a fanatic, anti-surrogate element to the story that would result in human-on-surrogate violence. While there's hints of that in the trailer, Surrogates looks disappointingly slick and Apple store-ish. Even the "disaster" footage shown at the end is too clean and CG to really be all that horrifying. Instead of suggesting Blade Runner, all I see is I, Robot and a hint of the utopian perkiness of Demolition Man. I'd really like to be wrong, though ... but that plasticine version of Bruce Willis suggests I shouldn't count on it.

So Erik-with-a-k covered the coming comedies of 2009, Scott was all over the horror picks (though his inclusion of Race to Witch Mountain still boggles my mind), Eric-with-a-c nabbed the family-friendly fare, and Elisabeth went over the geek fodder that awaits. But while I respect their calendar years and made-up math alike, I've opted to divide my list of 2009's action and adventure flicks into four categories: Action Flicks I Couldn't Care More About, Action Flicks I Couldn't Care Less About, Action Flicks That I Hope Surprise Me, and Those Which Fell In Between. Enjoy!Action Flicks I Couldn't Care More About: First and foremost -- Watchmen (March 6th). It's one hell of a graphic novel and looks to be one hell of an adaptation (with or without the Giant Blank), but the only problem is it may not hit theaters on time if 20th Century Fox has anything to say about it. Both Fox and Warner Brothers are fighting over who actually owns the rights, and if a judge favors Fox comes January 20th (when the court date is set), we're looking at a delayed release and a whole ton of angry fans. Then there's Public Enemies (July 1st), which has me sold on not the subject matter, but sheer pedigree: Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp and Christian Bale as '30s gangsters. (It doesn't hurt that the earliest word ranges from damn good to great.) On the skimpier side, I can only hope that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 17th) streamlines its source material as the previous one had, and I can only hope that Crank 2: High Voltage (April 17th) lives up/down to the depravity of its predecessor. There's one last action movie that I couldn't care more about because, well, I've already seen a version of it. The international cut of Taken (January 30th, though reportedly opening with some R-dodging trims) is about as brisk and butt-kicking as one might hope out of a man-on-a-mission kidnapping thriller, and if you disagree, I'll send Liam Neeson to change your mind.

2009 has begun on a rather tense note for geekdom as Watchmen became further embroiled in legal soup. As Fox pushes for a delay, we must contemplate a rather thin year of geeky offerings .... which just shows how spoiled we've become. Watchmen and Wolverine alone would have made our year before the wonder that was 2008, when we had Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and the Punisher. But hey, this is going to be the Year of Announcements -- we're going to find out who Captain America and Thor are, who or what Iron Man must face in his sequel, and hey, we might even find out whether Edward Norton will reprise his role as the Hulk. We're going to have fun, no matter what happens with Watchmen.
January
Nothing. Watch The Dark Knight ten more times, I guess (especially when it returns to conventional and IMAX theaters on January 23). Or read a graphic novel; you must have gotten some for Christmas? Anyway, take a breather. You're still recovering from 2008.
February
Neil Gaiman's Coraline, and a limited release of the long-delayed Fanboys both come out on February 6th. Gaiman for the win, no question.
March
Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen.The film is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 6th, however Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox are still fighting in court over who actually owns the rights to the property. If a judge rules in favor of Fox on January 20th or before, we may not get Watchmen on time ... but we will get a whole bunch of angry fans. Read more about it on our Watchmen page.
April
Dragonball Evolution hits theaters on the 8th. The excitement is palatable.
May
This is the month of geekdom, kicking off with the film my year centers around, X-Men Origins: Wolverine on May 1. If this isn't good, the Geek Beat will burn with the fury of a thousand suns the following Tuesday. May that be your warning, Fox.
A little independent film you might have heard of also comes out this month: Star Trek hits theaters on May 8th.
Casting Bites: From Mardi Gras to Jail

Here's some more casting news, courtesy of Variety:First up is twenty-something comedian Dan Levy. He has worked under Bill & Ted's Alex Winter in television's Dirty Famous, and on the big screen side of things, we're about to see him play "Snooty Man" in The House Bunny. Now, on top of acting alongside a scary-looking (in the film) Anna Faris, Levy has nabbed a role in Mardi Gras. This is one of those Maxim flicks -- the one that already stars West from Heroes. So, this probably won't help his career, but at least he gets to party.
In an entirely different vein, Boris Kodjoe is signing on for another science fiction role. He's already completed a stint in Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (I wish I was kidding), and now he's picked up a role in Disney's sci-fi thriller called The Surrogates. This is NOT that flick where unsuspecting would-be parents pick an insane surrogate, but rather, the one that just got a creepy set photo. There is no word on who he'll play in the robotic flick.
Finally, there's a new gig for one of the sexy ladies from Grindhouse. Vanessa Ferlito has picked up a much less gruesome role in Tyler Perry's latest -- Madea Goes to Jail. She gets to play some woman named Donna. But that's not all that we can see her in. She's also got a gig in Humboldt Park and Julie & Julia on the way.
Creepy Set Photo From 'The Surrogates'

The Milford Daily News is hosting some spy photos from the set of Bruce Willis' sci-fi thriller The Surrogates -- and suddenly, it just became a whole lot more interesting. The Surrogates is set in a future where every human has a robotic surrogate that lives their public life for them, while they remain tucked away in their homes. Willis plays a cop who is forced to leave his home to investigate a series of robot murders. It's based on Robert Vendetti's graphic novel of the same name, and while the graphic sounded interesting, the movie sounded a bit bland, a repeat of I, Robot. But presumably, the above photo is one of the murders, which suggests it's keeping the fanatical elements of the book. If this is an indication of how nightmarish and gruesome the film will go, I'm intrigued. What about you?

Ving Rhames and Rosamund Pike Join 'The Surrogates'

Earlier this week, there was buzz that Radha Mitchell was joining the science fiction thriller, The Surrogates. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed it, and reports two other actors added to the mix -- Ving Rhames and Rosamund Pike.Based on the graphic novel by Robert Venditti, the film will focus on a cop (Bruce Willis) who lives in a future world. However, instead of getting a naked Milla and trying to save the world from one uglified Gary Oldman, he's in a world where people live out their lives through "perfect-looking" robotic versions of themselves. But then these robots or "surrogates" start getting axed, and the cop has to venture into the world, as himself, to find the killer. Mitchell is playing his cop partner, Rhames is playing "a charismatic cult figure who disdains the use of surrogates and tries to lead an uprising against the 'new world order,'" and Pike is playing Willis' wife.

According to Coming Soon, Radha Mitchell has joined the cast of Jonathan Mostow's sci-fi thriller, The Surrogates. The movie is based on the graphic novel from Robert Venditti and was adapted by the screenwriting duo of Michael Ferris and John D. Brancato. The bad news is that these guys have written some pretty crappy movies in the past. Hopefully, these two are better at adaptations than they are at original ideas.In The Surrogates, Bruce Willis stars as a cop in a futuristic world where all human interaction is performed by look-alike robots called Surrogates. Not only do the robots do all the talking for us, but they're even better looking too (when it comes to Mitchell, though, the original is none too shabby ... so I can't imagine what they would do to make her even better looking). When someone begins murdering 'surrogates' right and left, Willis is forced to venture into the outside world for the first time to track down the killer.

He was supposed to head up Oliver Stone's latest Vietnam drama, Pinkville -- but that is on indefinite hold due to the strike. So, instead of some really depressing accounts of war, Bruce Willis is going sci-fi. Variety reports that the actor has signed on to star in The Surrogates -- Jonathan Mostow's robot production that Erik Davis blogged about back in March. The team that collaborated with the director on T3, Michael Ferris and John Brancato, wrote the script, which is based on a graphic novel from Robert Venditti.Similar to the game Second Life, Surrogates is set in the near future, where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots who are "better-looking versions" of themselves, rather than making the effort to step out of doors themselves. (A comment on the electronic age? Undoubtedly.) Bruce will play a cop, big surprise, who uses his surrogate to investigate the murders of other surrogates. (Wouldn't that be robotocide?) As the mystery unfolds, he has to do the unthinkable -- leave his house for the first time in years to solve the crime. While I don't go gaga for Willis, he's an attractive man, so I can't wait to see these "better-looking" robotic versions. Will good-looking celebs play sequestered humans who then play with even better-looking robots? This could get tricky really fast. The film will get released through Touchstone, and will gear up to shoot in early 2008.
'T3' Director Jonathan Mostow Will Direct Graphic Novel 'The Surrogates'

It's pretty clear that Jonathan Mostow has a thing for futuristic robots ... and that Hollywood now has a thing for adapting graphic novels into heavily-addictive pieces of visual crack. The director has decided to partner up once again with the writing duo (Michael Ferris and John Brancato) from Terminator 3 on The Surrogates, an adaptation of the graphic novel written by Robert Venditti. Anxious to feast on the same box office numbers Warner Bros. is enjoying with 300, Disney has acquired the rights to the graphic novel with intentions of turning it into a sci-fi thriller set in a "Philip K. Dick-like futuristic universe." Since the content is a bit too edgy for the Mouse House, they'll most likely set it up at Touchstone and just let Mostow go nuts with it.
Though I'm not too familiar with the storyline, apparently The Surrogates takes place in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and communicate with one another through surrogate robots. Producer David Hoberman likens it to Second Life -- that computer-generated internet world where people create their own fictitious identities and interact in the same way they would in the real world minus the, well, realness. Somewhere in between, Mostow will also helm Terminator 4: The One Without Arnold, as well as Real Steel (about a bunch of 2,000-pound robots who fight one another) and an adaptation of the Marvel comic book Sub-Mariner. No word yet on whether Mostow is indeed a robot himself, but here's hoping at least one of these robot flicks is better than Will Smith's I, Robot or else I ... won't be very happy.
