I don't know about you, but I've really come to look forward to that time in May or June when Pixar releases their annual animated tale. It's like regardless of what big franchises are launching, rebooting, remaking or sequalizing during those summer months, we know that no matter what Pixar will give us something to smile at; something that's sure to make us feel all warm and cuddly inside as if a tasty bowl of soup magically found its way into our stomachs while the movie was playing.
That may all change when it comes to the summer of 2011, though, as Walt Disney has announced a release date change for Cars 2, from June 24th, 2011 to December of 2011. The announcement came during the company's first quarter earnings call on Tuesday, and it's the third release date the film has been given so far (after originally posting a 2012 date, then moving to summer 2011). Moving Cars 2 leaves a hole in the June 24th slot, though studios will be careful with what they put there seeing as The Green Lantern is right before it (on June 17th) and Transformers 3 is right after (on
However, Disney was planning to release their fairytale The Bear and the Bow in December of 2011, so Cars 2 moving means Bear and the Bow will most likely shift too. Where will it shift? We don't know. Obviously there's a small outside chance it will take that June 24th spot, but rarely do animated films move up their release since folks behind the scenes need that time to finish piecing the film together. In all likliehood, that means we're not getting a Disney/Pixar animated film over the summer of 2011, and, yes, I'm a little sad inside right now. You?

'Transformers 3' Bayhem To Commence Filming in May

Funny how when you give up paying attention to a franchise, news on its future developments goes in one ear and out the other. I enjoyed the first Transformers, feeling it delivered an enjoyable blend of big budget action and whiz-bang effects, but absolutely hated Revenge of the Fallen. I could barely wait for it to end and by the time the credits signaled I could finally flee the theater, I had sworn off the series. Since then, I've only been paying vague attention to any progress on a new film, mainly because all news concerning said film seemed to revolve around the supremely untalented Megan Fox.I was kind of surprised when I came across a headline this morning at IESB that declared filming on the untitled part 3 was set to begin this May. I know I've been ignoring Transformers news for the most part, but I thought word that Michael Bay and company were all officially coming back would have stood out. Turns out it did not. But considering that those big, brawling robots are relevant to pop culture, I figured it was best I scan back and read up on where production stands.
- Michael Bay is returning to direct, despite initially saying he needed a year to recover from Revenge of the Fallen.
- Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have moved on and will not be returning to script part 3. Ehren Kruger, the man largely responsible for all of the bad things about Revenge, will take over writing duties.
- Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox are both signed on. Unfortunately for us, the studio probably won't let Bay kill off Fox in the opening scene.
- Bay wants this new film to focus more on the "characters", particularly the relationship between Sam and Bumblebee. He also wants his big budget action movie to have less action.
Paramount is still looking to stick to the July 1st, 2011 release date earmarked before Revenge of the Fallen even came out. With filming set to begin in May, we should start getting our first official glimpses of Transformers 3 late summer. Will 'less action, more characters' be enough to sway back audiences spurned by the assault on the senses that is Transformers 2? Only time will tell.

I didn't think it was possible for any movie to be too big for Michael Bay, especially not a Transformers movie. But judging from this candid DVD extra, even Bay thinks Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen veered on excessive, and he's promising to scale back when he tackles #3. As we speak, Bay is combing through the Transformers lore that Hasbro has sent him and pondering who or what will be smashing crap up in another installment. Just the way he says "Transformers lore" makes me want a story centered on Bay exploring ancient catacombs to uncover the missing Transformers arcana with Megan Fox as his sidekick. (She'll be packing a Ph.D in Hasbro lore because she's not afraid to be smart and sexy.)
As Bay ponders how to go sideways from Revenge (his words, not mine), he does have a few ideas in mind. He wants more Bumblebee, and to explore the powerful relationship he has with Sam. He wants more characters, and more emotion. He wants it to be "more undercover" and "less exposed" which might be difficult for our transforming pals when they destroyed the Great Pyramid of Giza.
At the end of the video, Bay decides to abandon plot ideas and offer a cash reward. Then he says "Just joking!" because come on, the man has to eat, and Fallen didn't make a kajillion dollars, just a few hundred million. However, maybe a few of you more skilled in Transformers lore than he is can make use of the address, and write him with what you want to see in #3.

Five Ways For Michael Bay To Kill Megan Fox in 'Transformers 3'

Michael Bay has a lot to atone for. He's become the cinematic whipping boy of bad, over the top, explosion-filled movies, which are of course also his forte. But he could rectify most of that in one fell swoop, and it's by doing something that he's already considering: killing off Megan Fox. Okay, to be fair, we mean killing off her annoying character Mikaela in Transformers. It might not make us forgive everything, but it's huge step in the right direction.
There's no love lost between Bay and Fox. She called him "Hitler" and said you had to be a genius to understand Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (was she watching an unseen Criterion cut of the film?). He had his own words to say, and had several cast members rally to his defense in a letter-writing flurry that detailed how bitchy and hard to work with Ms. Fox was. Things have escalated to a level where he's reportedly considering killing her off in the next Transformers film. At this point we're surprised he'd be bringing her back at all, because a simple "Ever since Mikaela left for that mechanics study course in Germany" line and she's out of the film.
But the fact that he's considering killing her off is deliciously evil, because it means he wants to bring her back just to kill her off onscreen. Not since Paris Hilton got waxed in the House of Wax remake have people been anticipating the demise of a celebutart. We're ready to get Halloween rolling by including Michael Bay among our best villains and suggesting some creative ways he might take care of the problem. 'Transformers 3' Nabs Megan Fox and 2011 Release Date

Over on his official blog, Michael Bay has announced that Transformers 3 will arrive in theaters on July 1st, 2011, not 2012 as others (including Bay) had speculated. Originally Bay had wanted to take some time off from Transformers to shoot a smaller film called Pain and Gain, though someone or something (a giant pile of money, perhaps?) convinced him to instead bang out a third Transformers movie and then move on to his passion project. Bay says that today is Day One on Transformers 3 pre-production, and it started with a five-hour meeting at ILM in San Francisco and will continue as Bay flies to Rhode Island with screenwriter Ehren Kruger to meet with Hasbro and discuss new characters.As far as Megan Fox and their War of Words is concerned, Bay had the following message for her: "P.S. Megan Fox, welcome back. I promise no alien robots will harm you in any way during the production of this motion picture. Please consult your Physician when working under my direction because some side effects can occur, such as mild dizziness, intense nausea, suicidal tendencies, depression, minor chest hair growth, random internal hemorrhaging and inability to sleep. As some directors may be hazardous to your health, please consult your Doctor to determine if this is right for you."

Seems like a small war is starting to brew between Michael Bay and Megan Fox, after the latter said some unflattering things about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, telling the Early Show recently that she still doesn't understand the movie and that it's apparently made for geniuses. Bay, of course, is not one to take criticism lightly -- especially from some girl who was nobody until he dropped her into the first Transformers movie.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal about the situation with Fox, he says, "Well, that's Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she's 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, "Okay Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it." But I 100% disagree with her. Nick Cage wasn't a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in "Armageddon." Shia LaBeouf wasn't a big movie star before he did "Transformers"-and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from "Bad Boys." Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in "Transformers." I like to think that I've had some luck in building actors' careers with my films."
We shouldn't worry whether this war of words will hurt either person's involvement in a third Transformers movie because according to Bay that's not happening anytime soon. On a third Transformers film, he says, "I just want to take some time off. It's been almost three years that I've devoted myself entirely to this world of robots. At some point, enough is enough-and I literally carried this movie on my back. ... I don't know who [would] want to take on my shoes with this franchise. We might just take a year down."

ShoWest came to a close last night with their annual awards ceremony, where director Michael Bay was honored with the Vanguard Award for Excellence in Filmmaking. We'll skip the obvious jokes and cut right to the chase: During a press conference prior to the ceremony, Bay opened up about the current 3D boom by calling the technology "a gimmick" and later adding that he has no intentions of making Transformers 3 in 3D -- partly because he doesn't believe in 3D, and partly because his run-and-gun style of filmmaking is too constraining for 3D. As far as whether he'll be directing a third Transformers film, Bay smirked and issued the standard "wait and see how the second one does" reply. Remember how Paramount jumped the gun and announced a summer 2011 release date for the third installment? Well, Bay reiterated his earlier claims that the studio made a mistake and was perhaps claiming that date so they had it locked in before deciding exactly what to put there. If a Transformers 3 does happen, look for it to hit theaters in 2012 instead. On Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Bay talked a bit about the IMAX portions of the film, as well as the final budget -- which came in four million under the planned $200 million, leaving some additional funds for extra effects work.

Michael Bay Says No to 'Transformers 3' in 2011

Yesterday Paramount -- obviously acting with itchy trigger fingers -- went ahead and set a tentative date for Transformers 3 to hit theaters on July 1, 2011 so that they could lock down that oh-so-important date during a summer that's beginning to look like it may go down as one of the biggest and most anticipated on record. But while Paramount secured their date, they didn't necessarily secure their director or their cast -- and now Michael Bay has gone on record saying he ain't interested in the gig if they want to turn it around that quickly. Here's what Bay said on his own message boards (after previously saying that he'd like to take a year off from big giant robot wars): "I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 - they asked me on the phone - I said yes to July 4 - but for 2012 - whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots."
So if the studio really wants Michael Bay to direct the third Transformers film (and why wouldn't they -- he might not be the best director, but in my opinion he's the best director for this particular property), then they're going to have to push it to summer 2012. Will they push, or will they hire someone else? Is it that important to have Transformers 3 in 2011? Or will Paramount hold onto the date and switch out Transformers for something else?

Surprise! 'Transformers 3' Already in the Works

We're still months away from the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (it opens on June 24) but Paramount and DreamWorks are wasting no time. According to Variety, Transformers 3 is already in the works, and it's got a release date: July 1, 2011.This is the first official word that Transformers is getting the trilogy treatment, although it really comes as no surprise. But Paramount cautions that nothing is set in stone yet -- they merely wanted to stake their claim on the date. There's currently no direct competition, and the arrival of giant robots pretty much means there won't be.
The studios wouldn't confirm whether Michael Bay, Shia LaBeouf, and Megan Fox would return for number three, though Bay seems likely. However, LaBeouf and Fox are busy filling up their slates with John Grisham thrillers and Fathom adaptations, so we could see one or both of them drop out of the franchise. And would it matter terribly if they did? Does anyone really go to a Transformers movie for the human players and not the giant robots?
So, barring any other official word, here's where you can express your pleasure, speculate as to what a third installment would center on, whether Revenge of the Fallen will end on a major cliffhanger, and hope fervently that Megan Fox returns. It's just a guess, but I suspect she's almost as much of a draw as Optimus Prime.
