And when I say ridiculous, I mean "WTF is going on in this flick!?" I'm not sure when this new red band trailer for Tropic Thunder went off the deep end: Was it when Ben Stiller took a young child who was stabbing him in the back (literally) and threw him off a bridge, or was it when Stiller was holding up the decapitated head of a soldier and sticking his tongue up to its guts. Oh, I'm totally not kidding about any of that, either -- this one looks completely out of control. Kudos to Stiller; for awhile there, it looked like he was way past his prime. With Tropic Thunder, something tells me the entire crew downed a case of "something real good" and said, "Screw it, let's just go absolutely nuts with this one and really freak people out."

Tropic Thunder stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr. (who's cursing in every scene ... as a black man), Brandon T. Jackson and Jay Baruchel as a group of actors shooting a Platoon-esque war film in the jungle. When that film's director (as played by Steve Coogan) decides these guys need to be "in the sh*t," the gang wind up face to face with an army of real soldiers. I can't even begin to explain this trailer -- it's probably the most disturbing, yet oddly hilarious piece of marketing material I've seen all year.

James Rocchi and I got into Cannes this afternoon, checked into our flat, and then promptly headed out to the Croisette to get our press badges and take a slew of pics. Movie posters abound on the Croisette. They're draped on luxury hotels and adorning the sidewalks; pretty much everywhere you look, it's movie marketing central around here. I'll have a Live from Cannes post up later with some other pics of the Cannes scene and the lovely Croisette, but in the meantime, here's a bunch of movie poster pics for your viewing pleasure.

Just when you thought you've seen it all ... okay, I'm not even gonna go there. Scientology! But anyway, Connor Cruise, Tom Cruise's 13-year-old adopted son, has landed a role in Will Smith's new flick Seven Pounds, where he'll be playing a younger version of Smith in a minor, non-speaking part. For those who aren't up to speed on Cruise and all his kids, you might be kinda looking sideways at your computer right now. "Did he say Cruise's kid is going to play a younger version of Will Smith?" Fear not, my illinformed friends, they're not taking a page from the Tropic Thunder playbook; oh no, see, Cruise's son Connor is adopted and he is of the same color as Mr. Smith. Phew. (Sit down Al, I didn't say anything wrong or offensive.)

The film, which also stars Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson and Barry Pepper, and is directed by Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness), follows the story of a man (Smith) who affects the lives of seven strangers. It's a drama. There are no crazy special effects. And, yes, it comes out this December -- which, cross your shiny, manicured little fingers, means Smith will be listening for a knock on his door from Mr. Oscar come February. Seriously, though, I love Will Smith. I cannot think of a performance from him that I did not enjoy (performance, not movie -- stop smiling I, Robot, you're not off the hook yet), which is something I rarely say about an actor or an actress. Will Smith is like a warm cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day, no matter which film he's starring in. Guy always finds a way to leave you feeling all warm and toasty inside. Mmmm ...

It's been quite some time since the Farrelly Bros. have given us a gem like There's Something About Mary, Kingpin or Dumb and Dumber. Big-screen comedy trends seem to be changing; moving away from the random gross-out gags and more toward the random pop-culture references. But that won't stop Bobby and Peter Farrelly from navigating toward material they're familiar with -- and Variety tells us their latest comes from a script written by Mike Arnold and Chris Poole. It's called Beaujolais. Yup. I don't know what it means; Wiki says it's a wine.

Anyway, the Farrelly boys are going to produce with an eye on possibly directing. Variety describes Beaujolais as a "redneck action-adventure with a protagonist along the lines of Austin Powers or Ace Ventura." So basically it's Larry the Cable guy with a few more catchphrases. Danny McBride is currently in talks to star; he's popped up in films like The Heartbreak Kid and Hot Rod, with upcoming roles in Land of the Lost and Tropic Thunder.

Do you think Peter and Bobby Farrelly still have a comedy classic left inside them? Or has their type of humor simply taken a long walk off a short pier? (Man, would I love to see another Outside Providence from these boys ...)

I really think that if Tropic Thunder lives up to our expectations, this may very well be the "Summer of Downey." For starters, I'm already sold on Iron Man, and believe me, it has nothing to do with a love of men in big metal suits. Paramount Pictures has released three new character posters for the action comedy and there is just something about Downey's whacked out expression that brings a smile to my face. Although to be fair, I'm steering clear of the whole 'black face' debate until I actually see the movie. Especially since it seems a little early in the game to start crying "racist" when no one has even seen Downey's performance yet.

Thunder was written and directed by Ben Stiller, who also stars as a spoiled action star cast in a big budget war flick that is spiraling out of control. Tired of dealing with spoiled stars and unruly locations, the director (played by Steve Coogan) decides to drop his actors in the middle of a real armed conflict in hopes of adding some 'verité' to the film. Of course, the actors are all clueless of the fact they are no longer in the cozy confines of a movie set and wackiness ensues.

So we all know that Tom Cruise jokes are getting a little old, but you can't deny it's been fascinating to watch one of the most powerful guys in movies have a "freak out" and be forced to watch all his star-worship fade away. According to Fox News' Roger Friedman, it's not looking good for Bryan Singer's historical drama, Valkyrie. According to Friedman, "Valkyrie is a set up for not only failure, but ridicule." Friedman goes on to take shots at Cruise's attempts at a German accent and even Singer and Christopher McQuarrie's dialog gets a few (dis) honorable mentions. Although, to be fair, I wouldn't count on a gossip reporter from Fox to be the final word on film criticism.

Friedman joins the chorus of critics who think that Valkyrie will not only fail to improve Cruise's current Hollywood standing, but that it will further add another nail to his box office coffin. Cruise still has a few more chances to pull himself out of this mess: First up will be a cameo in Tropic Thunder, then it's on to a full-on attempt at comedy with director Todd Phillips (Old School) in Men, and finally Cruise is expected to star alongside Ben Stiller in the buddy comedy, The Hardy Men (which I personally think has some potential). Who knows? Maybe he will finally be making people laugh at him on purpose. Valkyrie arrives in theaters on October 3rd.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, everyone's favorite webslinger is tackling another comic book adaptation. Tobey Maguire is teaming up with Neal Moritz to produce Afterburn, a comic series published by Red 5 Comics. There's no word yet if Maguire plans to star, or if he's sticking behind the scenes on this one. No writer has been assigned to adapt.

Afterburn is a sci-fi adventure set in a post-apocalyptic Earth, where the Eastern Hemisphere has been destroyed by a massive solar flare. Those who survived have mutated due to the radioactive fallout. In this bleak setting lives a group of treasure hunters, who are happy to track down priceless treasures like the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone, and the Crown Jewels -- for the right price. After all, they have to combat rival hunters, mutants and pirates. It sounds like Tomb Raider meets the X-Men. It's been getting pretty good reviews across the Internet, so I may just have to check it out since I'm a sucker for anything involving treasure hunters.

Did you ever notice how Beavis and Butthead was often a TV show about two guys watching TV? The videos they were watching became the stories within the story. That's the theme we're shooting for this week. We're peeling back the layers of a handful of recent trailers to get at the story within the story.

Tropic Thunder
During the production of an extremely troubled Vietnam movie, a handful of actors are sent into the jungles of southeast Asia to inject realism into the flick. Things don't go quite as planned and our heroes, including Ben Stiller (who also directs), Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr., find themselves in actual combat with guerrilla forces. Basically, this is the plot of Three Amigos as seen through an Apocalypse Now lens, but this looks like it could be really funny. I can't decide whether or not Robert Downey, Jr.'s performance as a white actor pretending to be black is going to be hilarious or just embarrassing, but it being Downey I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Elisabeth posted about this one as well as the age-restricted teaser trailer, and like her I want to know what the heck Stiller is doing with those baby pandas, though he does appear to be channeling Zoolander in that shot.

It's here! Surely this must be one of the quickest follow-ups to a teaser in trailer history. You can watch an official, high quality version over on the film's official website if you prefer. I am trying to tell myself that this won't be as funny as the trailer -- that all the good stuff will be ruined -- but I can't make myself believe it. And it is all because of Robert Downey Jr. wearing a monk's robe and freaky Dune-blue contacts. Plus I want to know what the heck Ben Stiller is doing with two baby pandas.

Imagine not having to input your birth date and other information in order to watch a red band trailer. Oh yeah, that's already a reality thanks to YouTube. But you know what I mean. Legally, currently, we've had to prove our ages to see restricted trailers for such movies as Pineapple Express, Semi-Pro, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, The Foot Fist Way (this comedy's whole website is age-restricted), Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Alien vs. Predator: Requiem and, most recently, Tropic Thunder. We've even seen red band trailers for PG-13-rated movies like Beowulf, which doesn't make any sense at all. Well, now we can see them on the big screen again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Regal Entertainment Group cinemas (includes: Regal, United Artists, Edwards) has decided to bring red band trailers back to theaters.

Regal, the nation's largest cinema operator, made the announcement last week at ShoWest (yet the news hit the trades too late for my summary) and will begin looking at red band ads this week to see which film gets to be the inaugural title (the chain has already been quietly experimenting with a few at its Art Theaters). Obviously the trailers will only be shown before movies rated R or NC-17 or which are unrated. And most of them will likely continue to be for Judd Apatow movies. The move by Regal should put some new life into the marketing of certain movies -- Semi-Pro might have done better had its red band trailer been shown in theaters -- and will possibly influence other cinema chains to follow suit.

Now that we have all gotten over the initial shock of seeing Robert Downey Jr. in 'black face,' we can all settle down and direct our attention to all of the other reasons why Ben Stiller's action comedy Tropic Thunder is going to be pretty high on the list of must-see summer flicks. Slash Film now has two new pictures from the comedy with the whole cast in tow.

Stiller came up with the idea of Tropic Thunder while he was working on Empire of the Sun with Steven Spielberg. Thunder centers on a group of spoiled actors making an expensive Vietnam flick. Inexplicably, the group find themselves in the middle of a real war and they are forced to become real live soldiers. The all-star comedy cast includes Stiller, Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey (in a part originally intended for Owen Wilson), and Steve Coogan as the wacked-out "Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now" role.

While these photos may not be as much fun as the teaser that was just released, I'm sure this is just the first of many media releases for the film. If you are over 18, I highly recommend checking out the teaser -- with possibly the best tag line for an action film in the history of the movies. If not, you'll just have to figure out how to sneak into the theater with the rest of us when Tropic Thunder lands in theaters on August 15th.

I echo the majority when I say I don't think I've ever looked forward to a Ben Stiller comedy -- but this looks hysterical. And please tell me they're going to keep that 1970's film stock look. I'm laughing hardest at Robert Downey Jr.'s pop up. "Arrrgh!" It's practically proof they cut this after the still was released. "Downey doesn't need to say anything! Just have him pop up in that make-up!"

I really want a Tropic Thunder patch. Right now. Send me some swag, Dreamworks! I will put it on my jacket and wear it proudly.

I may not be too thrilled with the thought of male modeling sequels, but I'm itching to see what Ben Stiller makes with his first directing gig since Zoolander. The flick is Tropic Thunder, and that image above is part of the first look released by Entertainment Weekly. This time, the focus is actors, and the comedy follows a group "of self-indulgent stars cast in the modern equivalent of Apocalypse Now." However, the director (Steve Coogan) and writer (Nick Nolte) get fed up with them and ship them off to the jungle to fend for themselves.

Meanwhile, Stiller and those involved are hoping this comedy doesn't start an uproar.

So folks have been taking tons of jabs at Tom Cruise for wearing an eye patch in the new Bryan Singer flick Valkyrie. If you think that's bad, get a load of the guy in these new photos (courtesy of JustJared) in which he's dressed as a studio exec for a cameo role in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder. And what's their idea of a studio exec? Why a fat, hairy-chested bald guy -- is there any other kind? Cruise's cameo had been rumored for quite some time now, while Stiller and Co. have been doing what they can to keep quiet when asked about the role. Unfortunately, the surprise casting is now out in the open, but in my opinion it's worth it to see these pics. And kudos to Cruise for putting himself out there ... though as a guy who has the potential to one day be fat and bald, I sort of take offense. Boo Tom Cruise. Shame on you.

In Tropic Thunder, Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Justin Theroux and Jay Baruchel play a group of American actors attempting to shoot a war film who, through a series of freak accidents, become forced to become the soldiers they're portraying. Nick Nolte, Bill Hader and Steve Coogan also star. Honestly, with this cast, how can this film not be an absolute riot. I've been off the Stiller wagon for awhile now, as I'm sure a lot of you have, so hopefully he still has it in him to produce a gem. Tropic Thunder is due out on July 11. A petition to ban Tom Cruise from giving fat, bald men everywhere a bad name will be started (by myself) tomorrow.

When Owen Wilson dropped out of filming Tropic Thunder due to his sudden (and, thankfully, non life-threatening) hospitalization, I was pretty bummed -- that film was shaping up to be one of my most anticipated of 2008. I know, I haven't been too fond of Ben Stiller as of late, but he had lined himself up with one heckuva cast, and the premise sounded like a blast. Hey, that rhymes. Cool. But what can you do -- sh*t happens -- and since the cast still rocks without Wilson, it's all good. Now, Variety tells us they've found Wilson's replacement in one Matthew McConaughey. But you McConaughey fans shouldn't get your hopes up too much, as Variety claims "the job amounts to an uncredited cameo." So no matter who took on the part, we still would've been left with the same response: "Oh, look, it's blah blah blah in a cameo role. Ain't that cute?"

McConaughey joins a cast that already includes Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Nick Nolte, Jay Baruchel, Justin Theroux, Bill Hader, Steve Coogan and, although nothing official was ever released, apparently Tom Cruise may show up playing a studio executive in another one of them uncredited cameos. Those of you who know Stiller and his entourage should be aware that his films are full of these cameos -- but that's what makes them sooo special. In the flick, directed by Stiller, a group of actors gather to shoot a big-budget war film on a remote island. However, problems arise when the situation calls for these fake soldiers to become real ones. McConaughey will shoot his part over the course of one week; he also just finished filming the flick Surfer Dude for director Andy Tennant. Tropic Thunder hits theaters on July 11, 2008.
