Interview: 'G.I. Joe' Director Stephen Sommers

For a guy who allegedly got fired from his latest film, Stephen Sommers shows few signs that he's letting the rumor mill wear him down. "The guys who have been hammering me for the last year have really turned around in the last couple of weeks when they started seeing the movie," Sommers beamed during an interview about G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. "I'm pretty happy."
Admittedly, Sommers' commercial track record is almost inversely proportionate to his critical one, raking in hundreds of millions of dollars with the Mummy movies and Van Helsing despite reviews that were, to say the least, often unkind. But speaking to the director via telephone about G.I. Joe, Sommers indicated that he has accepted – if not championed – his spot among Hollywood's purveyors of pure spectacle. "They love to hate the guys who make the movies that they love," he said of the "internet movie haters" calling for his head.
Cinematical spoke to Sommers about his participation in G.I. Joe, which followers of the film know has been highly-contested in press reports as the film moved towards its opening day, August 7. In addition to clarifying his employment status at the helm of the film, he discussed the development of the film's iconic conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra, reflected on what interests him as a director and storyteller, and perhaps most importantly, explained why some of the costumes were changed en route to the silver screen.
Cinematical: When you started working on G.I. Joe, what did you feel like was essential to preserve about the source material, and what did you know that by necessity would have to change when you adapted and updated it for live-action?

The film following world has been rather skeptical of Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which casts Jay Baruchel as the role Mickey Mouse made famous, and Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer. It's one thing if they were returning to the Goethe original (though to be fair, it doesn't differ much from the version laid out in Fantasia), but they're really just trying to go Pirates of the Caribbean with an animated short ... which might have been okay if it had been Night on Bald Mountain, which drew its inspiration from Gogol's terrifying story St. John's Eve.
But I digress. Because the point of the post is to introduce you to Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer, who is apparently ripping his look off Hugh Jackman's Gabriel Van Helsing. All that's missing is Kate Beckinsale, a crossbow, and a conditioning treatment to better copy Jackman's flowing locks. Once he gets those, my attraction to Jackman's fedora will be quenched.

In addition to those, Celebrity-Gossip also has some of Teresa Palmer. The only thing that has me curious about this movie is how Baruchel ends up as his apprentice. Because if I was approached by a "magician" who looked like that, I'd run screaming the other way. Check out a few images below ...

'Igor' and 'Kung Fu Panda' Both Get New Trailers

Both of the upcoming animated releases that aren't Wall-E or Space Chimps got new trailers yesterday. Here's one for Igor (and here's a link to the poster we premiered a few weeks ago), and here's one for Kung Fu Panda.Kung Fu Panda looks like it'll be just a step or two above -- *shudder* -- Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Igor, on the other hand, looks like a charmer: the premise is inherently nerdy, requiring viewers to think back to the original Frankenstein films (or at least Young Frankenstein, or Van Helsing in a pinch) to get the joke, and the trailer has a few big laughs.
The biggest upside of Kung Fu Panda coming out on June 6th: those of us who frequent AMC Theaters will no longer have to endure the Kung Fu Panda-themed pre-movie interlude exhorting viewers to shut up. I'm not sure how many more times I can listen to Jack Black tell me that he can hear me texting before I have an aneurysm. But I guess I should be grateful AMC is no longer airing that horrid Three Doors Down "Citizen Soldier" video pimping the National Guard (because no one screams "role model" to teenagers like the lead singer of Three Doors Down). That thing gave me nightmares.
