First Trailer for 'Couples Retreat'

Filed under: Comedy », Universal », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

'Couples Retreat'The title may be generic, but the cast is not. Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, and Faizon Love accompany their significant others -- Malin Akerman, Kristen Davis, Kristen Bell, and Tasha Smith -- on a vacation to paradise in Couples Retreat. There is a catch, however: intensive sessions of relationship therapy are mandatory and counselor Jean Reno doesn't take "no" for an answer. The first trailer is up at the Fruit Factory (AKA Apple.)

While there's a degree of over-familiarity with the basic premise, the trailer is very promising, edging into the naughty side of PG-13. (According to Erik Davis' post on the movie last year, that's the rating they're aiming for.) Bateman and Bell make for a good, edgy couple of Type A-personalities on the brink on break-up who ask three other couples to come along on their retreat to save money. Old friends Vaughn and Favreau have great chemistry, of course, and have worked with Bateman before. I'm not a huge fan of Akerman or Davis -- they're both lovely and have bright personalities but not a lot of comic snap. Seeing Reno as a buff instructor makes me giggle. Favreau wrote the script, based on an idea by Vaughn, and another old pal, Peter Billingsley, makes his directorial debut.

Couples Retreat is heading for release on October 9, a crowded date on the release schedule: The Informant (drama), Night of the Demons (horror), Whip It (comedy), and Zombieland (horror comedy) are also due out that day. Does the concept or the cast -- or the trailer -- grab you?

Scenes We Love: Swingers

Filed under: Fandom », Trailers and Clips », Scenes We Love »

With Valentine's Day approaching, one can't help but recall their most embarrassing romantic moments -- if only as a reminder to relax, take a chill pill and just ... "be yourself." And when I think over my most favorite embarrassing romantic moments in movies, right at the top of the list is this scene from Swingers. Growing up, I didn't know the proper way to pick up a girl, and the one or two times my idiot shtick actually worked -- well, let's just say I still get shivers whenever I leave a message on an answering machine.

It's almost impossible to promote just one scene from this film when there are so many memorable moments, but this one just hits you where it hurts -- and hopefully some of you will watch this and remember to wait two days ... or is it three?

Two fun facts about Swingers (via IMDB)
  • The movie is loosely based on the experiences writer Jon Favreau had when he first moved to LA. He had just broken up with a long term girlfriend and counted on his friends Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston to cheer him up. The characters they play in the film are based on themselves.
  • The exterior and interior of Mike Peter's apartment was the actual building and room that Jon Favreau lived in at the time the film was filmed. Favreau's downstairs neighbor was actor Adam Scott.

First Look: Vince Vaughn's 'Couples Retreat'

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Images »

The first image from the comedy Couples Retreat has popped up over at USA Today, and it shows our four happy couples posing for the camera, all excited to be working on their relationships. Peter Billingsley (aka Ralphie from A Christmas Story) makes his directorial debut here (off a script written by Jon Favreau) after working as producer on several projects -- and the film stars his friends Vince Vaughn and Favreau (who've teamed up on screen plenty of times now), as well as Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk.

The film tells of one couple (Bateman and Bell) in need of relationship therapy who, in order to save costs, invite three other couples to join them at a couples retreat. Vaughn says this of the plot: "Jason and Kristen are Type A's struggling to have kids. Faizon and his wife (Kali Hawk) have just separated, and he is dating a young girl from Foot Locker. Me and my wife (Malin Akerman of 27 Dresses) are swamped with the kids and work. Favreau and Kristin Davis are secretly not completely faithful to each other." Vaughn also stressed that while there will be sexual gags, this won't be an R-rated foul-mouthed parade. USA Today says to expect a PG-13. No release date yet, but expect this to hit theaters sometime next year.

Cinematical Seven: Favorite Will Ferrell Man-Children

Filed under: Comedy », New Line », Sony », Dreamworks », Cinematical Seven »

At some point this past summer, between all but consecutive viewings of The Dark Knight, I slipped into a screening of Step Brothers with the same tempered expectations with which I had greeted Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro -- and found myself equally surprised in the coming days and weeks and months by just how admittedly tickled I was by any of them (quoting lines was moderate on all counts). Mind you, I'm saying this as the guy who chuckled during Anchorman, sure, but not really enough to keep it on my shelf or call myself thankful for it.

That's nothing against our Eric D. Snider, and nothing against the star of each film mentioned, Will Ferrell (yes, he was actually Batman). In fact, with Step Brothers hitting shelves today (with reports of a wholly sung commentary track), it only seemed fitting that we go over his most amusing roles as overgrown man-children (Ferrell's, not Snider's). Because they're there, and they always will be, and the sooner that I admit to being vulnerable to his shtick, a better world this very well may be.

Review: Four Christmases

Filed under: Comedy », Warner Brothers », Theatrical Reviews »

Last November, Warner Bros. released Fred Claus, a Christmas-set comedy pairing up lead Vince Vaughn with Rachel Weisz.

This November, New Line released Four Christmases, a Christmas-set comedy pairing up lead Vince Vaughn with Reese Witherspoon.

Mere coincidence, you might ask, despite the fact that New Line is owned by Warner Brothers, not to mention the shared initials of both the titles and the actresses playing the love interests? Perhaps, but happenstance loses my vote when the best one can say for Four Christmases is that it's a marginally better holiday romp than the likes of Fred Claus.

A Hero, a SatC Alum, and a Watchmen Go On a 'Couples Retreat'

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting »

If you want to broaden the appeal of a romantic comedy, it helps to grab an array of actresses -- like say, a girl who is not only known as a modern Nancy Drew, but also a hot-tempered Hero, a woman who starred in one of the hot rom-coms of 2008 (Sex and the City), and a girl who can smack down baddies in an alternate time of superheroes and impending doom.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, and Malin Akerman have signed on for a new film called Couples Retreat. Now Akerman, at least, has had some iffy luck with this genre, so here's what ups the ante -- it's written by Iron Man Jon Favreau, and will be directed by collaborator Peter Billingsley (better known as the Christmas Story kid). So, it's not your everyday comedy. In fact, "rom" has been completely left off the genre placement of this project so far, but it is a comedy about romance. (Is there a difference?!)

The story involves four couples working on their relationships at a tropical island resort, so who are the men in romantic peril? Jason Bateman gets to be married to Bell, Favreau is also co-starring as Davis' husband, and Vince Vaughn gets to canoodle Malin. As for the fourth, Faizon Love is attached, but there's no word on his leading lady.

'Christmases' vs. 'Holidays': The Winter Family Comedy War Looms

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », New Line », Trailers and Clips »

Feel that chill in the air? That's because you left the kitchen window open -- go on, I'll wait -- but that secondary chill you're feeling would be the multiplex yuletide season turning in our direction, ready and waiting to melt the bleep out of your heart. Last year, it was This Christmas and The Perfect Holiday begging to be mistaken for one another (in title, not in quality).

This year we've got at least two winter-themed family-minded dramedies waiting in the wings. First out the gate is Nothing Like The Holidays (the trailer's now up at Apple), in which a Hispanic-American family gathers for what might be their last Christmas spent together. Sooooo ... it's basically This Christmas, with the casting emphasis on a different minority. However, for all that film's familiar beats, I found myself surprisingly won over, so here's to hoping that something similar might come of Holidays on November 21st.

In the other corner, we have Four Christmases, in which Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon find themselves shuffling off to visit each of their parents on X-Mas Day. If this (embed-less) TV spot on YouTube is any indication, Vaughn's creaky neurotic shtick and infant spewage will be par for the course, not to mention the last thing I might expect to come from the non-doco directorial debut of Seth Gordon (The King of Kong). As the Hollywood gods have decreed it, Christmases is set to open just before Thanksgiving on November 26th. Ah, the smell of leftovers...

Matthew McConaughey is ... Magnum P.I.?

Filed under: Casting », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom »

But now the big question still remains: Will he get to take his shirt off? According to Entertainment Weekly, Matthew McConaughey was offered the leading role of Thomas Magnum in Universal Pictures' adaptation of Magnum P.I. In fact, right this very second (and possibly shirtless) McConaughey is said to be reading over the script from writer-director Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball); trying to decide whether or not he'd be a good fit. For those youngsters in the crowd, Magnum P.I. was a boss '80s TV show about a Navy Seal-turned-detective who liked Hawaiian shirts and big, porn mustaches.

This isn't the first we've heard of McConaughey and Magnum P.I. All the way back in January of 2007, he was rumored to be up for the part -- a role that, at one point, was going to Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Vince Vaughn. And ... what about Tom Selleck? Will he get to play a part? Probably not. Back in 2006 (oh yes, this project has been lingering in the halls of Hollywood detention for quite some time), Selleck called the movie idea "stupid" and said he'd take no part in it. Heck yeah, Tom! Tell it like it is. But if they were to move ahead on this, I like McConaughey out of everyone. Keep in mind, they'll update it to a point where the only traces from the old TV show come in character names and cheesy Hawaiian shirts.

What do you think about a Magnum P.I. movie? Keep it or kill it?

Review: Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show

Filed under: Comedy », Documentary », New Releases », Theatrical Reviews », Cinematical Indie », Picturehouse »

The comedy documentary Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show isn't all that wild, and the comedy is sporadic. When it's funny, you may nearly fall out of your seat with laughter. But the movie is about 15 minutes too long -- at least -- and by the end you would like the funny guys to get their butts home so you can do the same. If you're planning to see this movie because you're a huge Vince Vaughn fan, bear in mind that he's not the center of this film, and you'll have to watch a quartet of stand-up comedians at length just to enjoy your favorite actor.

In 2005, Vaughn organized a tour of stand-up comedians and sketch comedy, from Los Angeles through Texas and into Georgia, then veering north to Nashville and ending in Chicago. The "Wild West Comedy Show" consisted primarily of four up-and-coming comedians, plus funny sketches involving Vaughn and any fellow actors or friends he could drag along for the ride. Vaughn's scheme is to bring a raunchy-guy humor to places that he believes are lacking in that type of show, primarily in the South and Midwest.

Catch the Lone New Installment of 'Dinner for Five' This Week

Filed under: Fandom », Home Entertainment », Trailers and Clips »

Since I've never had IFC, I discovered Dinner for Five really late in the game, but it's a pretty cool show. The premise, loosely based on the Algonquin Round Table, is simple: Jon Favreau sits down for dinner with a few celebrity guests and they eat, drink, and talk about life on and off the set. There are a bunch of old eps, featuring names from Bruce Campbell to Saffron Burrows, John Sayles to Jennifer Beals, and that doesn't even begin to cover the people who have popped on the show.

Now IFC reports that the late show is getting on new installment (yay!), which they are calling "a last hurrah," this Friday at 10:30 PM. Jon's final (at least for now) guests are: Vince Vaughn (Reese Witherspoon's worst nightmare), Peter Billingsley (A Christmas Story, and Iron Man executive producer), Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard), and Keir O'Donnell (Wedding Crashers). So basically, it's pretty much a group of friends getting together.

The best thing -- for a short while, they're airing the episode online, right here, so you don't have to set your digital recorders or cancel those saucy Friday night plans. (Canadian readers: this applies to you as well! Unlike sites like Showtime or MTV, which block out-of-country traffic, the IFC feed works.)
