New 'Watchmen' Trailer Has Arrived!

In what's truly been a fun week for marketing battles, Watchmen and Star Trek square off one more time this weekend, with each debuting a brand new trailer. Warner Bros. is first out of the gate with their Watchmen trailer arriving on Yahoo this evening. As for Star Trek, audiences will get to watch (and record illegally before uploading to YouTube, no doubt) the new Star Trek trailer in theaters before Quantum of Solace prior to its online debut this Monday.
In the meantime, feast your eyes on the glorious Watchmen trailer below. What do you think of it compared to the other trailers? Is it better? Worse? I'm certainly diggin' what I've seen so far, but my only worry is whether Snyder will be able to accurately capture the wide scope and philosophical undertones of this beast. Nothing against Snyder at all, but there's a reason why folks have had a hard time adapting this behemoth of a graphic novel. Based on this trailer, though, things do look damn good. Check out our recap of a half hour of Watchmen footage over here, and there are a couple galleries worth of images and posters for you to surf through below. Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

Watchmen is set in an alternative 1985, and if you glance at the photos of the Owl Ship and Oxymandias, you'll see the evidence in a lost landmark, and a president long gone. Like most comic book realities, costumed superheroes ( or "costumed adventurers" as they're called in the book) are real, but most have a pronounced lack of superpowers. Watchmen centers on two generations of them -- the Minutemen, and the Crimebusters. No one is actually called "the Watchmen" in the story; the title refers to any group who's goal is to protect society from themselves. Hence the phrase, repeated throughout the book and film, "Who watches the watchmen?"

You've Got to Watch the 'Watchmen' Trailer This Weekend!

Some of you out there already think I'm crazy for opting to see The Dark Knight on a regular screen rather than an IMAX screen. While there are a few reasons for my decision, the big kicker was word that the Watchmen trailer would be attached to the regular deal. However, I did have my fingers and toes crossed that it wouldn't be a too-brief teaser that didn't show much, like that Star Trek trailer, or any of the other ones that get you excited but leave you anxious.Well, if CHUD's Devin Faraci is to be believed, it'll be a damn worthy trailer, but still likely to leave us anxious. He got to check out what's attached to the film and said: "I think you're going to be blown away." I refuse to read the whole thing because I still want to be surprised, but Devin says that the sucker is over two minutes long, and it's definitely a trailer rather than a teaser. It's vague enough to confuse and intrigue regular audiences, and also make fanboys and fangirls everywhere wet their pants. It's got the big blue Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach, action, and it's all done to a '90s soundtrack. Check out Devin's rundown if you want to learn more, and be sure to share your thoughts once it hits the screen on Friday.
