Want 'The Ultimate Cut' of Watchmen?

As we know and lament often, studios are never content to release a DVD just once, and any special edition is just a precursor to a bigger and better version somewhere down the road. Just a few months after we enjoyed Watchmen: The Director's Cut comes Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, which hits store shelves on November 3. As you can guess from the cover art, this is the edition that will splice The Tales of the Black Freighter back into Watchmen, extending the movie's running time by another half hour or more.
Presumably, the footage with the newsstand vendor and the kid reading the comic will also be added in to help it flow better, but the official press release doesn't actually mention that. Other than the Black Freighter, the special features are just one big grab bag of what already appeared on the Director's Cut and Tales of the Black Freighter DVDs. (For reasons of space and word count, I've included the bullet list below the jump. Compare at your leisure.) It should also be noted that back in July, Zack Snyder stressed the Director's Cut was his preferred cut, and seemed to dismiss the Ultimate Edition as an excessive re-release.
I'm tempted to buy this one just so I can hang out with the newsstand vendor, and watch Black Freighter without having to swap discs. But I know that when I really want to kick back for a Watchmen viewing, I'll just put in the Director's Cut. That version of the film was good enough for me, and if I really want the ultimate fan experience, I'll just read the book again. What about you guys? Will you race to the stores and buy this triple dip? Did you hold off buying it, knowing this version would hit at Christmas? Or are you one of the Watchmen movie haters who doesn't want any version but the paper one by Alan Moore?
'Watchmen' Director's Cut to Hit Theaters in July?!

Spoiler Alert! If you haven't read Watchmen and wish to remain unspoiled, read no further than paragraph 2.Watchmen buzz (good and bad) is building to the point that comic fans can't even sleep at night. But director Zack Snyder isn't content with that, oh no. At an MTV Spoilers screening of the film, Snyder revealed that he has the director's cut all ready to go (as Erik told us earlier) -- and you will see it considerably sooner than you thought.
"The director's cut is three hours and 10 minutes and comes out in July," Snyder said, describing his original cut as "considerably more violent than this ... and sexier." And if Watchmen does well, the director's cut will get a theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York. (If it does really well, might those of us stuck in the middle get to see it?)
If you're wondering what has been cut out of the book (besides a certain squid), Snyder gave a few hints when he revealed the DVD plans. Watchmen hits DVD shelves this fall, and will include what Snyder dubs the "Crazy Ultimate Freaky Edition" that will work in those time-omitted extras like Tales of the Black Freighter, Hollis Mason's death, more Manhattan moments on Mars and dialogue-heavy scenes with the newsstand-bonding Bernies.
There's at least one thing on that list I'm really surprised didn't make the final theatrical cut, but it's comforting to know that just about every tiny story detail is making its way to fans in one format or another. It doesn't matter what else comes out after March 6 -- clearly, this year belongs to Watchmen ... so far.

We've totally stumbled upon the first (or second) big trend of 2009, and it has to do with listening to uncomfortable movie-related audio files. While no one secretly recorded Watchmen screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men, X-Men 2) as he shouted foul-mouthed obscenities toward 20th Century Fox executives, the dude had no problem opening up during the Watchmen press day in Los Angeles yesterday when asked about his thoughts on the whole Warner Bros./20th Century Fox feud. A couple of quotes:
"I had worked for 20th Century Fox before, and I was fully under the belief that they had the potential to shut down the movie and remake it themselves out of pure spite and meanness. They're a rough group of people ... and somewhat ethically challenged."
"... My experience told me that they could shut down this movie, and lock it away in Rupert's vault ... and make it the most unseen desired cult movie of all time ... but I was extremely concerned. Many producer friends of mine said the same thing as Alex - that they're just going for money or whatever -- but I was like, 'Yeah, okay, but there's something beyond money going on at that studio and it has to do with ... So ... we should assume this Hayter won't be penning any future X-Men movies for Fox then? Whaddya think? In other Watchmen news, Collider confirmed that the Watchmen DVD will have a Director's Cut that's 3 hours and 10 minutes, and another cut with Tales of the Black Freighter mixed in which will run at 3 hours and 25 minutes. 'Tales of the Black Freighter' Getting DVD Release

Watchmen was always going to be a big deal -- but it actually just got bigger. I was among the fans just counting themselves lucky to get the Black Freighter (and to see Gerard Butler involved in it after all), and it looks just about everything from the graphic novel will make it on screen after all, in one way or another.The New York Times reported today that in an effort to revive their flagging DVD sales, Warner Bros will be releasing a DVD on 03/10/09 (that's five days after Watchmen hits theatres) that will include Tales of the Black Freighter, and Under the Hood. The latter is, of course, Hollis Mason's tell-all about his life as the Nite Owl.
At some point in the future, Warner Bros plans to release an "ultimate edition" of the film that will splice Tales and Hood in, which means you will have one heck of a marathon. Says Zack Snyder himself, "The überfans of this property are going to go crazy for that."
