Bryan Singer Returning to X-Men Universe?

While X-Men: The Last Stand definitely has its fans, the primary consensus was that folks would've preferred X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer behind the camera to complete the trilogy he started, which began with a very impressive origins film and continued with what some claim to be one of the greatest comic book films ever made. Unfortunately at the time, Singer gave up directing duties on The Last Stand to Brett Ratner in order to helm Superman Returns -- a move that kinda came back to bite him in the ass on not just one front, but two.

Now, though, Singer is talking to 20th Century Fox about returning to the franchise that's given him the most success as a filmmaker. Speaking at Korea's Pusan International Film Festival, Singer said, "I'm still looking to possibly returning to the 'X-Men' franchise. I've been talking to Fox about it." He added, " I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast." While The Hollywood Reporter doesn't mention any specific X-Men films, back in August it was reported that Singer was potentially interested in directing the upcoming X-Men: First Class film, though the Wolverine sequel is also currently without a director. Either way I'm sure fans would welcome him back to the franchise with open arms, hearts and minds.

If it was up to you, which upcoming X-Men film would you like to see Singer helm? First Class, Wolverine 2 or a big X-Men reunion film?

Christopher McQuarrie Will Write 'Wolverine' Sequel

Hugh Jackman has been itching to take Logan to the land of the Rising Sun since before X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit theaters, and as a sequel was announced mere hours after Origins hit theaters, it was no surprise when he announced this week that he was actively developing it. But "active development" has resulted in a big announcement as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher McQuarrie has been hired to pen the sequel. The Christopher McQuarrie. That weird noise you hear is the sound of my hopes going up despite my best efforts.

As you might remember McQuarrie is no stranger to the X-Men universe, having originally penned the first X-Men script before David Hayter came in. A very brief Google search doesn't reveal what McQuarrie's script would have been like, so maybe someone else can offer up what might have been. I think I can safely say that if he had written Origins, there wouldn't have been gaping continuity errors and laughable memory-removal MacGuffins.

Like most Wolverine fans, I love Frank Miller's Japan saga. It's the first time Wolverine was actually shown to have those things called "feelings," experienced something known as "failure," and it deepened his character beyond the berserker who did nothing more than hack, slash, and hit on Jean Grey. If done right, we could honestly pretend Origins never happened, and this is Wolverine's cinematic origin story.

Hugh Jackman DOES Want Wolverine in Japan!

Every bit of X-Men Origins: Wolverine news erodes my dignity a little bit more. Okay, I don't actually have any dignity ... but I really should be more patient before posting. Just a few days ago, I wound myself up over Jeff Katz's "last time I talked to Hugh Jackman, this is the Wolverine sequel he wanted" quote.

And now, Jackman himself sat down with MTV and confirmed that he really would love to take Wolverine to Japan. "The most intriguing thing to me was the Japan story. I love the Japan story. I wanted to do the Japan story from around X-Men 2. Can you just picture Wolverine in Japan with the triads and the samurai? It's just genius."

Now, I used to mock Wolverine's Japan adventures as being a way to cash in on Karate Kid fever (mostly to annoy other comic devotees), but Frank Miller's vision of him as a ronin is genius. With a single book (which you need to read if you haven't already), Miller and Chris Claremont deepened Wolverine from a beer guzzling thug to the poetic badass we all know and love today. Of course, now every Wolverine comic writer gives him a doomed Japanese bride, but there was a time when it was novel, romantic, and tragic.

So, why didn't Jackman & Co. do that story instead of the mutant extravaganza that Origin is rumored to be? "How can you do that before you explain his origins? If we tried to mix the origin and Japan together, it wouldn't do justice to either. So you can tell by the answer where I'd like it to go." Darn you, Jackman. You're right, of course, but this just means I have to wait that much longer, and hope that Wolverine is good enough for it to happen.

Oh, and check out yet another new Empire photo after the jump. Looks like he fills out his jeans as nicely as his tanktops.
