Is 'Zoolander 2' Still Simmering?
Filed under: Comedy », RumorMonger », Remakes and Sequels »
Of course, since Zoolander was a beloved hit, there's always been talk about a sequel. Hell, back in December of 2006, I wrote about Ben Stiller's plan to get back to the modeling industry after working with the Farrelly Brothers (The Heartbreak Kid). Things have changed a little since then. Instead of getting back to Derek, he's keeping busy with a bunch of projects from Tropic Thunder to Night at the Museum 2.But still, persistently, the topic continues to pop up. During an interview with Will Ferrell about Semi-Pro, MTV asked ol' Mugatu the big question, looking for the latest Zoolander scoop. Ferrel replied: "Yeah, there was a little talk, and I brought it up to Ben really five years after the fact. Just for whatever reasons, it's just not crystallizing." Hallelujah! Sure, Ben could release news tomorrow that it's a go, but for now, I'll be comforted by the thought of an untarnished world of male modeling.
And this is coming from a place of love. I adore the movie. It's one of the very few films that makes me laugh no matter how many times I see it. That's rare. Even if they can recapture the characters and come up with a similar storyline, what's the chance that they can bring it all together in a way that lives up to the original, rare magic? I'd say close to zero. In our real, imperfect world, do you think a second Zoolander could be just as good, and live up to expectations?
Cinematical Seven: Be the Best Santa Ever with Movie Memorabilia!

Lots of people say that it isn't easy buying gifts for people, but I have to disagree. Unless you have almost zero contact with a person, it's easy to just keep a few mental notes about their likes and find a gift that's at least moderately suitable. But with the advent of the Internet and a sweet little service called eBay, it became ridiculously easy to put in less effort and get even better gifts -- especially for the rabid movie geek. The site is a veritable smorgasbord of movie memorabilia. Remember a few key words from past conversations, and you can come up with tongue-twisting gifting greatness -- memorable movie memorabilia.
Yeah, some of it is beyond ridiculously-priced. I'm still bummed that I couldn't buy a few Buffy auction pieces a few years ago when the show ended, but not all of it is made for Mr. or Ms. Moneybags. There's also funky Buy it Now stuff, and little trinkets from films that never come close to the dreaded 4-figures. What follows is a list of current auction goodies that could make you the best Santa ever. Some are always available, others are rare, funky finds, and all of it is something that'd be special and unique. And remember -- be a smart bidder.
Detergent Container from Superbad - Auction Ends 12/19
Who knows how pricey this item will get when it hits its end date on December 19, but as I'm writing this on Saturday morning, it's current $10.50. Sure, that price is guaranteed to go up, but it's still a heck of a cheap price for a highly-recognizable prop from this summer's best comedy. Team this puppy with a picture of Jonah Hill running with the detergent containers and the prop's certificate of authenticity, and you'll become a gift-giving God to any fan of Judd Apatow, Hill, and all that is Superbad.
Zoolander... Part Deux

There's been buzz about a Zoolander sequel for a while. Now, Ben Stiller felt the need to add fuel to the simmering fire. USA Today has a new article with Stiller that talks about his upcoming film, Night at the Museum, and his career's past, present, and future. Next up, Ben will star in another "raunchy romantic comedy" by the Farrelly Brothers, and then he plans to explore a sequel to his take on the modeling industry. One can only hope that a number of other films get thrown on the docket, pushing sequel thoughts so deep down that they're never heard from again. This is coming from a place of love. The tale of Derek Zoolander has been told. Is there really that much more to explore? What Stiller should do is go back to his pre-Wilson days and remind us that there's more to his head than pursed lips and spikey hair.

That Man: Peter Berlin screening in NYC
Filed under: Documentary », Gay & Lesbian », NSFW »
It takes a special kind of
man to have his penis compared to Jane Mansfield's breasts, but that's how John Waters describes gay icon Peter Berlin
in a clip from That Man: Peter Berlin, which opens today in
New York City. Berlin, a pornstar who spent the 60s, 70s, and 80s starring in porn films, modeling, and getting
photographed by the likes of Warhol and Mapplethorpe, was the inspiration for Owen Wilson's character
in Zoolander. The "legend," now 63, also created his own clothing to accent some of his
body's more "impressive" features. I understand why he would want to flaunt it, but at the same time I think
I'd feel uncomfortable being too exposed. I imagine some scenario where I'm suddenly being chased by a moose and have
to leap a barbed wire fence to save myself. I'm just saying I'd like to be better protected in that instance. That
probably doesn't happen in NYC very often, but still, one has to be cautious. Berlin's next project, he claims, will
involve numerous video tapes he's created of himself having sex. Also, tapes of himself watching himself have sex on
tape. He has lots of sex, I think that's what we're supposed to derive from this.
