SXSW Review: A Necessary Death

(Warning: The following review contains spoilers that may ruin the moviegoing experience for you. Read at your own risk.)

Here's the official synopsis for A Necessary Death: "Documentary Filmmaker looking for suicidal individual to follow from first preparation to final act." Cut from 142 video tapes, this project sheds light on the tragedy following the infamous internet ad." It's not until the end credits begin to roll before we're finally presented with proof that this is not a real documentary; it's a fictional narrative told through the documentary format (or as some would say, a film by and for the YouTube generation). Either way, whether you go in knowing this or not knowing this, the film still packs a solid punch with its wild ideas, strong storyline and terrific performances.

SXSW Watch: A Necessary Death

"This is just weird. This is just really weird."

And that's exactly how I felt after watching the above trailer for the new film A Necessary Death, which is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival next month. I don't want to say too much about the film, because I have a feeling it's one of those flicks where it's best not to discuss your opinion prior to watching it. Essentially, on the surface it appears to be a documentary that follows a kid who needs to make a movie for his college thesis. What he does is he puts an ad on the internet looking for someone who's set a date to commit suicide. His intentions are to follow this suicidal person around from the time they conceive of the idea to when they actually go ahead and kill themselves.

It's pretty warped to say the least, especially the part where the dude is trying to decide who to follow around by figuring out which person he thinks is serious enough to actually go through with the deadly deed. But is it real? Is it fake? That's all part of the mystery. Needless to say, we'll definitely be checking this one out when we arrive in Austin. For more on our pre-SXSW coverage, head over here.
