Hellboy 2 Jumps Into Action
Filed under: Action », RumorMonger », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
Well readers, the time of the great return may finally be upon us. No, not Jesus (although I suppose I can't guarantee that one) -- Hellboy. After a scary time in limbo when Guillermo del Toro and his team had to seek out a new studio to pick up the franchise, the stars are finally aligned for Hellboy 2. According to M&C, the power players behind the film are headed off to Budapest to begin some serious pre-production, stage one in bringing us a sequel.Honestly, I don't worry a bit about the integrity of this film -- unlike other flicks which I nervously obsess over and feel the need to hunt for any tiny detail which might suggest hope. I've seen what this team does with the source material, and frankly, it is brilliant. What I do worry about with the Hellboy franchise is box office returns, because the reason del Toro was hunting for a new studio was the lackluster receipts from the first flick. It didn't tank, but it didn't rake in the cash studios hope for from comic book titles; which is a shame, because it is among the best of the current comic book movie blitz. Let's hope the impressive first offering will encourage a higher turnout for the second try.
Doug Jones Dishes on Hellboy and FF Sequels

Like any good movie fan, I have my own fully developed set of pre-dispositions when it comes to certain actors/directors/writers, etc. You know how it is -- there are some people you just inherently trust to provide you with quality work. Likewise, there are similar characters which immediately instill feelings of fear and disgust. This doesn't mean you can always predict the quality of a film brought to you by one of these folks (for instance, I love William H. Macy, and dude is in some awful movies), but it does give you somewhere to start. For me, Doug Jones is very near the top of the list, despite his somewhat atypical body of work. I can't speak to the quality of every film Jones is in, but I can almost categorically promise that I will love his performance in it.Delightfully, Jones has signed on to two of my very favorite comic book franchises, landing major character roles in both Hellboy and The Fantastic Four. Jones has recently completed work on FF2, and is gearing up for work on Hellboy 2, and in the downtime chatted just a bit with IF Magazine. He said to expect a lot more screen time for Abe Sapien in the Hellboy sequel, and a great buddy role with Hellboy. Of the Four he said very little, because he wasn't sure what he was allowed to discuss. He did, however, note: "I'm going to play it safe and say that it would be difficult to introduce the Silver Surfer without Galactus having some kind of presence in the film."
Guillermo del Toro: Hellboy 2 Has Great Villains
Filed under: Action », Fandom », Scripts », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
My anticipation of Hellboy 2 is no great secret to regular readers. Like most geeks, I'm a big fan of the comic book, and was thoroughly impressed with the first film. Despite my deep fanboy affection for Marvel, Hellboy probably trumps every Marvel flick in my list. Since the first film met with a great fan reaction but something of a mediocre box office reaction, we went on something of a ride waiting for confirmation on the second film. But now it is coming, and none too soon. Popular director Guillermo del Toro sat down for a chat with Coming Soon, and shared information on a number of projects, including Hellboy 2. Here are the most interesting bits:- Guillermo and his team pulled off the impossible -- a sequel with a different studio -- through very hard work and determination, most notably that of Larry Gordon.
- Just the like first film, creator Mike Mignola was sure it wouldn't happen. We can all rejoice in Mignola's incorrect hunches; del Toro is convinced Mignola has to be down on a project in order for it to achieve success.
- Although the new movie will move in a new direction plot-wise, you can expect some of the story to pop up in the current comic series.
- We won't see too many new faces from the BRPD, because Johann Krauss is expensive enough to add by himself.
- We will see an even stronger gallery of villains, because del Toro feels he should've done better in that regard last time.
- Guillermo del Toro actually has a small comic book deal with Dark Horse, whenever he can find the time to put something together.
Doug Jones To Voice Abe Sapien In Hellboy 2
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
If you've been reading Cinematical for any length of time, you probably know I'm an unabashed Doug Jones fan. Part of this dedication comes from his performance as Abe Sapien in Hellboy; he did a fantastic job bringing a rather odd character to life. Like many fans, I always felt bad for the guy because he didn't get his voice in the film. I understand director Guillermo Del Toro had David Hyde Pierce in mind from the beginning, and that worked out just fine, but since then Doug Jones has signed on to do the voice for Abe Sapien in animated Hellboy action.*Recent news from creator Mike Mignola, however, suggests this issue may be remedied for the second Hellboy go-round. The exact quote, in fact, is "I believe Doug is going to do the voice in Hellboy 2," which is about as direct as you can get. Mignola also said he'd be fine with a smaller budget on the second flick, although Del Toro still wants to do a big budget blowout. Whichever way they go (most likely dictated by the studio), I eagerly anticipate the flick, and I'm sure they'll do an excellent job on it.
*Creating the rather humorous circumstance of being a body but not a voice in one instance, and a voice but not a body in the other.
Hellboy 2 Script Review
Filed under: Action », Fandom », Scripts », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
A week or so ago, I shared with you some of the big plot points for Del Toro's recently picked up (yes!) Hellboy 2 flick. The ever-impressive Latino Review got their hands on a full draft of the script, so even more details are now floating around for our enlightenment. I'm not going to bother repeating the plot details -- you can read the post linked above for that -- I'm just going to jump right into the new tidbits with the aid of my ever-beloved bullet points. SPOILER HATERS BEWARE, THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS NOTHING BUT SPOILERS.- Abe Sapien gets much more screen time, to the great joy of yours truly. Doug Jones is a popular guy these days.
- There will be some monstrous new sets, including a troll market, Yokai spirits in in Tokyo and a dragon attacking Moscow. Yes, friends, a dragon. Among my greatest dreams in the modern effects-laden movie era is to see as many dragons on screen as possible. I'm sure this one will look fantastic.
- Other battles will include Hellboy fighting a five story tree elemental (on the Brooklyn Bridge, if you are curious), and the Golden Army tearing apart a human army. As well they should.
- Latino Review promises the movie serves up more action before the opening credits role than most films this year have in their entirety. The script apparently flows from battle to battle, only letting up for moments of very well-written character development.
Doug Jones to Make Major Role Announcement at Comic Con
Filed under: Action », Casting », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
John Zanders, publicist for actor Doug Jones, has hinted at a major casting announcement for his boy Doug. According to Zanders, the announcement will come via this week's major geek convention in San Diego, Comic Con. This, of course, hints that the announcement will have something to do with another geek film property. Jones has already won the hearts of comic book geeks with his performance as Abe Sapien in Hellboy, a flick well received by the fan community. The scuttlebutt (I can't even believe I just used the word scuttlebutt) is suggesting Jones for the semi-CGI role of Fantastic Four's Silver Surfer. It had been thought Galactus' Herald may be entirely CG, but recent announcements from Marvel stated otherwise, and the part is now wide open for rumor and speculation. This fanboy, for one, would welcome Jones with wide open (figurative) arms into the Fantastic Four film pantheon. He impressed me as Sapien, and he physically matches the characteristics for the CG layover, so he is as good a rumor candidate as anyone (and better than several). I suppose we will know soon, since the announcement is supposed to happen this week. Stay tuned to Cinematical for further developments ...
Doug Jones Hints at Hellboy 3

Seriously, what honest comic book fan doesn't love the character of Abe Sapien? If you don't know him, go grab some
Hellboy comics and don't come back to this article until
you've finished at least three of them. For genre fans, the movie adaptation of Hellboy was a great event; a
beloved comic book story which actually kept its storyline intact in the transition from pages to screen. Naturally, it
was well-received; which means sequel announcement was quick to happen. We've already heard from director Del Toro the
increased plans for Abe Sapien's character in the second film, but if you want to hear about it from the mouth of the
actor himself (Doug
Jones) you can dig his recent interview with IESB. Even if you have heard the news, the interview is worth your
time just to hear Jones' thoughts on his character. The more interesting bit to emerge from this interview is Jones'
mention of a likely third movie, the prospect of which is sure to please fans.Let's be serious -- how many of us couldn't make that prediction in our sleep? A well-liked super hero flick with the dedicated attention of a popular director could have franchise potential? Amazing! I've certainly got my fingers crossed in hopes for the Hellboy title to carry through as many films as it can. Presuming, of course, they continue to be as quality as the first one.
