Egads! Another 'Quantum of Solace' Accident

Filed under: RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy », Movie Marketing »

Last weekend brought the tragic news that the Aston Martin featured in the upcoming 007 movie Quantun of Solace was wrecked beyond repair. It turns out that's not the only danger on the set of the film, currently shooting in Italy: On Wednesday, a James Bond stuntman crashed while performing a chase scene in the area, and is currently in critical condition. suffering minor injuries It's probably better that this stuff is happening now, considering how many people were ready to pounce on the last film in order to prevent Daniel Craig from taking the reins from Pierce Brosnan. Now that the franchise appears to have a newfound groove, Quantum has a lot of positive buzz. So why does it seem like the set is suddenly cursed?

Accidents of varying degrees are commonplace on large scale film shoots, but the sense of peril can impact the final result in different ways. In the Twilight Zone movie, the helicopter accident during the John Landis-directed sequence killed three actors, causing Hollywood to avoid similar stunts for many years to come. The stuntman who suffered burns on 60% of his body on the Mission: Impossible III set, however, couldn't affect that movie, even when he decided to sue Tom Cruise. In the case of Quantum of Solace, subversively, the accidents might be a positive indicator of the sheer intensity that director Marc Forster hopes to bring to the film.

Crewman Seriously Injured On Set of Charlie Wilson's War

See, that's what you get for playing around with missiles. As is usually the case with any film that deals with explosives and missiles that are launched from helicopters, unfortunate accidents will sometimes occur. With that said, a special effects assistant was injured on the set of Charlie Wilson's War when a simulated stinger missile accidentally exploded. The man (whose name was not released) was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The film, which is based on the book written by George Crile and scheduled to be released this Christmas, stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman and is directed by Mike Nichols. The story follows congressman Charlie Wilson's (Hanks) top secret efforts to assist rebels in Afghanistan during their war with the Soviets. None of the stars were on set during the explosion (which is under investigation), and there's no word on whether the accident will delay production on the film. The incident comes only a few months after assistant propmaster Nick Papac was killed in a motor vehicle accident on the set of The Kingdom.

Haley Joel Osment Pleads No Contest

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »

Eighteen-year-old Haley Joel Osment pleaded no contest in court yesterday, and the judge didn't offer him a chance to Pay it Forward. Osment will serve three years probation, serve 60 hours in an alcohol rehabilitation program, attend 26 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings over a six month period, and pay $1500 in fines. Osment, who fractured a rib and injured his shoulder during an accident in July which involved him flipping a 1995 Saturn after crashing into a brick mailbox outside of Los Angeles, also had a .16 blood alcohol content (twice the legal limit) and a quantity of marijuana.

Osment's film Home of the Giants is currently in post-production and should be released later this year or in early 2007, so what will this mean for the teenage star? He doesn't have a next film lined up, which isn't too uncommon, but his last film was Secondhand Lions, which performed poorly at the box office in 2003 (although I highly enjoyed the Michael Caine and Robert Duvall pairing). He's done a lot of voiceover work since then, but this might put his live-action career on the skids for awhile. He's fallen a long way since his Oscar nominated performance in The Sixth Sense.

While it could bring trouble for the young actor, high-profile arrests in Hollywood have often proven to boost careers, just look at Hugh Grant, Russell Crowe, Robert Downey Jr., Nick Nolte, and Mel Gibson. While the jury is still out on how Mel will ultimately be affected, all of the other actors have enjoyed success after their days in court.

What do you think? Will this hurt or harm his career?
