'Twas the Voice Before Christmas

Filed under: Animation », Exhibition », Family Films », Newsstand »

You've heard his voice a million times, and now you can actually see what he looks like. Don LaFontaine, who has provided the "This summer, one man fights injustice and tyranny ..." voiceovers for over 3,500 different projects appears in this video, along with a sleigh-load of other voiceover talent reading "The Night Before Christmas." Aside from the Blockbuster commercials a few years ago, and the bizarre yet funny short film Five Men and a Limo which was made for the 26th Annual Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards from 1997 (that's a mouthful), you've probably never seen this guy's face.

Now's your chance to see him, Eddie Deezen, Dennis Haysbert, Jim Cummings and a load of other voice over actors (hey, you throw the voice of Pooh and Tigger into anything, and I'm a sucker for it) instead of just hearing them. They do a great job of it, and even throw in some Hanukkah cheer. After the jump, gather your friends and family around the warm glow of the computer screen, and let them soak in the wonderment of something you never see: the face of voiceover artists.

Actor Richard Bright fatally hit by bus

Film, stage, and TV actor Richard Bright died Saturday night after being fatally struck by a bus while crossing a street near his Manhattan home. The charactor actor was 68 years old. Bright was one of the few actors to appear in all three Godfather movies, playing Corleone family hit man Al Neri. In The Godfather, he's wearing a police uniform during the baptism scene. In The Godfather Part II, he's the one who goes fishing with Fredo and ... you know. Perhaps because of this well-known role, Bright seems to have specialized in playing cold-hearted criminals and law-enforcement officers.

Bright's film career started in the late 1960s; he took smaller parts in a few Sam Peckinpah movies, including The Getaway (as the train-station thief) and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. The above photo is from the 1987 film Time Out, but he also portrayed a cop in an early Sam Raimi movie, Crimewave. Most recently, Bright played in TV shows such as Oz, The Sopranos, and various flavors of Law and Order. No matter what his age, he was able to convince audiences he was a pretty scary guy.

Richard Burton still getting roles

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy »

Richard Burton may have died in 1984, but he's still getting better roles than many living actors. The stage and screen actor will play the narrator in the upcoming stage adaptation of Jeff Wayne's album War of the Worlds. The 1978 album was a musical version of the H.G. Wells novel. The stage musical will tour the UK in April. Don't worry, Tom Cruise is not involved in any way.

How is it possible for the late Burton to appear in a live stage production? He voiced the narrator on the 1978 album, so the producers will use the album's recording of his part in the stage musical. Burton will be represented visually onstage by a 3-D image of himself, which will be integrated with the recording so that the image appears to be speaking. I hope he is more successful than Laurence Olivier was in the 2004 film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
