Cinematical Seven: Women to Watch in 2009
Filed under: Fandom », Cinematical Seven », Lists »

There have been notable women in the world since that first apple-curious gal was made from an extra rib, and Hollywood has even covered many of their stories. But it just can't seem to allow that bubble to burst fully into the X-X spectrum. The lack of female directors has been well chronicled: We've seen the challenge in following the Bechdel Rule, and the list goes on and on. Most recently, we've watched as Catherine Hardwicke earned the best box office opening for a female director ever, only to be axed and replaced by Chris Weitz for the Twilight sequel, New Moon. Not exactly the best way to wrap up 2008 and kick off 2009, but life goes on and so do we.
Hollywood also moves on, and luckily there are still women to watch for. Some are older, and some are quite young; a few have the pressures of sophomore features, and one isn't even real. But they're all women who will mold the face of Hollywood in 2009. Read on and make sure to comment with the woman (or women) of Hollywood that you're waiting to see in the new year!
IFC Gets French with 'A Girl Cut in Two' & 'Actresses'

It's time for more film fest purchasing news, and this latest bit comes from the New York Film Festival. indieWIRE reports that IFC Entertainment has bought the rights to two French films that screened at the fest this year, which cover the realms of dark and neurotic comedy. First up is Claude Chabrol's lovely-titled A Girl Cut in Two, a thriller that has already screened in France over the summer. The other is Valeria Bruni Tedeschi's Actresses, a film that won a special jury prize at Cannes. Each are set to be released next year, both on the big screen and cable V.O.D.A Girl Cut in Two is a black comedy/thriller about a French weather girl who has found herself in a love triangle, when she entertains the affections of two crappy choices. While she loves a famous married author who won't leave his wife, she's also courting "a semi-deranged young heir" who wants her. She marries the younger man, and unfortunately, he isn't too happy with her love for the writer. It sounds like an interesting tale, and according to Variety, it's also based on a true story; however, that bit of information is a bit spoilery, so you've been warned.
The other female French flick, Actresses, is a comedy/drama about a 40-year-old single, childless actress named Marcelline who runs into an old drama alum during a rehearsals for A Month in the Country. Her old friend left acting for a husband and children, which shakes up neurotic Marcelline's lonely life. According to Variety this time around, "humor saves the whole from overtheatricality, just about balancing Bruni Tedeschi's neurotic flakiness." So, I guess that means it's a questionable, albeit enjoyable, female dramedy. Whatever the case, you can see both in theaters or from your couch soon enough!
The Summer Blockbuster Breast Conspiracy
Filed under: Action », Celebrities and Controversy », Movie Marketing »
This is one that you probably won't hear about from the traditional conspiracy theorists like Art Bell, but it exists nonetheless. It also has the potential to become bigger (pun intended) as this insidious plan works its way across the globe, ensnaring many unsuspecting actresses, movie executives, theater patrons, and checkout-stand magazine covers in its tentacles.10 Zen Monkeys is reporting that they've noticed something interesting: a lot of quotes from actresses in the top summer blockbusters about their breasts. They also did a little sleuthing to determine what was all behind it, and their conclusion was that these stars seem to think that talking about their chests will improve the box office takes of the summer tentpole films.
They call out Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean 3), Kirsten Dunst (Spiderman 3), Cameron Diaz (Shrek 3), Jessica Alba (The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and Lindsay Lohan (arguably not in a summer blockbuster ... especially after Georgia Rule sort of tanked). The ladies have backed themselves into a corner with no way to unhook themselves. We'll have to see how things stack up after the summer box office receipts are in.
