'Aeon Flux' Scribes Sign for 'The Boys'

I can't help but feel bad for Garth Ennis because it seems like lately, the guy can't catch a break. It was bad enough that the long-awaited adaption of his controversial series Preacher was shelved at HBO; but this is just adding insult to injury. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Columbia Pictures has hired Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay to adapt Ennis' anti-superhero comic, The Boys. Back in February, Elisabeth gave us the heads up that Columbia had picked up the property in the 'spirit' of looking for some titles that could give Watchmen a run for their money on the topic of superhero subversion.

Originally published in 2006, The Boys was created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The story was "set in a contemporary world very much similar to real one, with one notable exception: a number of people have some form of superpower. The series follows a superpowered CIA squad, known informally as "the Boys", whose job it is to keep watch on superheroes and, if necessary, intimidate or kill them."

So you might be wondering why the addition of Manfredi and Hay isn't good news. I mean everyone likes a comic book movie, right? Well, a quick glance at their collective resumes solves that mystery. Between the two of them, they have created some truly awful scripts (notably, The Tuxedo and crazy/beautiful). Hopefully the two have been brushing up on their 'superhero skills' by finishing their adaptation of R.I.P.D. for Universal. If not, I can't imagine that fans of the dark and violent world of The Boys will be pleased.

Spike TV Has Its Own Crazy Movie Awards!

Filed under: Action », Horror », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Awards », Mystery & Suspense », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

Well, this is weird. For the bulk of my 30+ years on this planet, there's been no such thing as a "televised horror awards" presentation, and now, not 15 minutes removed from geeking out over the newly-announced Fangoria Chainsaw Awards nominations -- I come across the Spike TV Scream Awards nominations! Cool!

Now, with all due respect to Spike TV and their cool new concept, I gotta say the Fango Chainsaw noms are just a little bit cooler. But hey, there's no law that says the horror freaks can't hang their hat on TWO new awards presentations. Frankly I think we could use a few more enthusiastic celebrations of juicy genre filmmaking.

Anyway, the Screams seem to run a lot like the Chainsaws do: Check out all the categories and nominees (after the jump) and then head on over to SpikeTV.com and cast your own votes! This is particularly amusing for the horror nuts -- because we're nothing if not passionately opinionated on which horror flicks rock and which ones suck the proverbial egg. Spike TV broadcasts their Scream Awards on the evening of October 10th.

New On DVD - Aeon Flux, Casanova, Final Fantasy VII

  • Æon Flux - This empty sci-fi flick's listing on IMDB.com is loaded with glowing user endorsements, leading everyone else who has seen it to believe that either drugs were involved in forming these opinions, the Pod People took these users over or an army of undercover PR lackeys is spinning overtime. This cinematic equivalent of a bronzed cow pie, an unimaginative Logan's Run pretender set 400 years in the future after a global plague, stars Charlize Theron as a rebel trying to take down the corrupt government of Bregna, the only city on Earth. From the way-lazy back story title cards and opening narration to the silly costumes to the cartoonish action sequences to the awful deadpan performances, this should be called Peed-On, Sux. Maybe Theron's mother needed an operation or something, but this is a very bad and brainless example of sci-fi, a puffed-up issue movie that ultimately offers nothing but regret. Instead, check out creator Peter Chung's original, pre-anime craze animated MTV series, which was released on DVD late last year.

Charlize bounces back from Flux: Variety in 60 Seconds

  • You're Charlize Theron. You have an Oscar. You also starred in one of 2005's most notorious flops. What do you do next? you find yourself a prestige project to produce, get the man who got you an Oscar on board, and get the hell on with that "serious acting career". Ms. Theron is joining forces with Bob Berney, producer of Monster and current head of Picturehouse, to produce The Ice at the Bottom of the World. Through an unusual deal, Theron, who has owned the property for several years, will not only produce and star in the picture – she'll own the final negative. The film follows the relationship between a grizzled Navy captain and his daughter, played by Theron, "a heroin addict and the single mother of a mixed-race child."
  • Meanwhile, Lionsgate is putting all its Oscar money on Crash. They're sending out an astounding 130,000 screeners of Paul Hagis' film – about 10 times the usual screener push. The mailout will include all members of the Writers and Screen Actors Guilds, and unusual move that will put the ensemble drama directly in the hands of those professionals most likely to appreciate its strengths and overlook its weaknesses.
  • In vaguely related news, former Lionsgate marketing man John Hedgeman has been tapped as COO of Fox's new youth division. This is interesting: Hedgeman says that the division, which is designed to produce content for an audience aged 12-24, is open to producing R-rated fare. "Whether it's a comedy or horror or drama or action, as long as it's speaking to a segment and it's a great piece of material, we'll make it," Hegeman said.
