Aisha Tyler Joins 'Black Water Transit'

Filed under: Drama », Casting »

New Orleans is filling up with cast members for Black Water Transit and the latest one to be added is Aisha Tyler. The list already includes Laurence Fishburne, Stephen Dorff and American Dreams star Brittany Snow, and no longer includes Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, who were attached and then dropped out. There's a limited amount of information available on the plot but the story is known to take place in post-Katrina New Orleans and revolves around a man -- maybe Fishburne? -- who is on a crusade to release his drug-addicted son from jail. IMDB describes the film as being about the convergence of law enforcement, criminals and lawyers over an illegal shipment of weapons into America as one man tries to find a safe harbor for his family's illegal firearms.

So in other words, it's about the relationships between cops and criminals. Black Water Transit is written and directed by Tony Kaye who gave us American History X -- thank you for that, Mr. Kaye. As for Aisha Tyler, I have to confess that I'm amazed by her work. I always found her to be terribly annoying as the Talk Soup host, but she's gone about building up an impressive resume since then. Also, we know that she will be playing a police detective, à la her roles in CSI and 24.

Check Out These Furious Balls

There's something vaguely schizophrenic about the career arcs of filmmakers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant. (And by "vaguely" I mean "ridiculously.") On one hand they're the co-creators of stuff like The State and Reno 911!, both of which are certifiably hilarious TV shows. On the other, less enjoyable, hand, these guys wrote not only The Pacifier, but Taxi and Herbie: Fully Loaded as well. (And they also have Let's Go to Prison and Night at the Museum on the way, as well as the Reno 911! movie.)

Mr. Garant makes his directorial debut on a bizarre-looking ping-pong comedy called Balls of Fury, and before you check out the brand-new trailer, give a gander at the blissfully bizarre cast list: Dan Fogler, Maggie Q, George Lopez, Aisha Tyler, James Hong, David Koechner and Christopher Walken, looking as if he just wandered off the set of Dracula: The Spoof.

OK, now you can check the trailer out. I got a few chuckles out of the thing, even if it does feel more like a Netflix rental than an opening night gotta-see.

Bacon and Tyler Receive Wan's Death Sentence

Filed under: Action », Drama », Thrillers »

To say that director James Wan "hit the lottery" with his debut flick would be a huge neon understatement. Mr. Wan's little Saw movie has yielded a certifiable cash cow for the lucky folks at Lionsgate Films -- so what's next for this young filmmaker? (And by "next," I mean "something other than a producer's credit on Saw 9.) Well, we're still waiting on word regarding the guy's Dead Silence, which I'm pretty sure is, like, completely finished and ready for consumption -- and now comes word that Wan's third feature is a revenge thriller called Death Sentence.

In this one, Kevin Bacon will play a guy who wreaks horrifically creative revenge on the scumbag punks who murdered his family. Former 5th Wheel / Talk Soup hottie Aisha Tyler will play a cop who goes along for the ride. So ... Death Sentence is basically The Crow meets Death Wish meets every revenge thriller ever made? Only time will tell. The project is based on a novel by Brian Garfield, a book in which Aisha Tyler's character is actually a middle-aged man.

Smart rewrite there, fellas.
