McConaughey Keeps His Shirt on for 'Surfer, Dude' Premiere in Austin

Filed under: Comedy », New Releases », Images »

Where else would you expect to see the world premiere of a comedy in which Matthew McConaughey is shirtless for the entire film? It had to be Austin. Instead of the traditional red carpet, the stars of Surfer, Dude strolled down a green carpet in 90-plus-degree weather last night, as part of a benefit screening for Austin Film Society. McConaughey (who kept his shirt on the entire time, sadly) was joined by a half-dozen of his co-stars, including Woody Harrelson, as well as director/co-writer S.R. Bindler. Bindler's previous film, the documentary Hands on a Hardbody, played at the Dobie in Austin for more than a year back in the late 1990s. Even McConaughey's parents were on the green carpet, although I don't think they appear in the R-rated comedy. The only disappointment was that Willie Nelson, who also has a role in Surfer, Dude, wasn't around.

After the jump, I've included a photo of Surfer, Dude actresses Alexie Gilmore and K.D. Aubert from last night's premiere. Out and About, the Austin American-Statesman's social/entertainment blog, has posted more photos from the green-carpet event as well as a short and light-hearted review. Surfer, Dude is opening on Friday in limited release -- including Austin -- and then will hit more cities on September 12. The film's distributor is Anchor Bay, primarily a DVD distribution company, but in the past year or so the company's started giving its movies a small theatrical release before the DVD rollout.

Alexie Gilmore To Have an Affair with Robin Williams

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

Last month, we learned that Bobcat Goldthwait would direct Robin Williams in a flick called World's Greatest Dad. The best part: While the title sounds like super-sappy fare (besides the Goldthwaite participation), it's actually the story of a high school poetry teacher whose son dies from a "freak masturbation accident." To cover up the "sticky" reason behind the death, the teacher pens a suicide note that becomes super famous, which then leads the dude to visions of stardom and inspires him to pen a whole journal for his deceased kid.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he also gets some action. At some point during this whole ordeal, he has an affair with a fellow teacher named Claire, who will be played by Alexie Gilmore (New Amsterdam). Talk about a prime role for the ol' Mork. These days, most of his films are either heavily familial, or heavily crappy, so now he's not only getting something that could freshen things up, but he gets to do it while canoodling with a 32-year-old.

Please don't let it turn out like Death to Smoochy. I think the world needs some good Robin Williams to revel in.

Scott Caan Shows Dylan McDermott 'Mercy'

Get ready for some indie romance!

Variety reports that Dylan McDermott and Scott Caan have signed on to star in a new romantic, independent film called Mercy. But Caan isn't just starring -- this is a story he wrote, and is also producing through a new company formed by himself and the film's director, Patrick Hoelck.

Also starring the likes of Alexie Gilmore, Erika Christensen, Troy Garity, and John Boyd, Mercy focuses on a young and cynical novelist. For some reason, this cynic writes about love, although he doesn't believe in it himself. But this is a story brimming with romance, so of course, he then falls in love for the first time and starts believing. Sappy, eh?

There's really not a lot to go on yet, but so far, I'm not impressed. But thinking of McDermott lead me to think about Campbell Scott and Chris Eigemann. Now, if the film was focused on an older novelist, played by one of them, I'd be all over this.

Anyhow, we should find out soon enough whether the film is too sappy, or nicely balanced. The film begins production Monday in Los Angeles.
