Casting Bites from 'Baby-O' to 'When in Rome'

And here are yet another round of small casting bites, courtesy of Variety:
  • You might not be familiar with the name Frederic von Anhalt, but you're certainly familiar with his famous wife -- the one and only Zsa Zsa Gabor. While he only has a few acting gigs to his name, the man has scored a part as "a corrupt Las Vegas casino owner" in Charlie Matthau's upcoming flick Baby-O, which has begun filming in Las Vegas and LA -- the same locales used in Matthau's 2007 production, Mikey & Dolores. As for von Anhalt, this seems to be a side gig to his many adult adoptions. According to IMDb, Frederic and Zsa Zsa have adopted a handful of grown men lately.
  • Chris Hemsworth, meanwhile, looks to be your regular sort of actor. Aside from his high-profile gig playing Captain Kirk's father in Star Trek, he is also looking for A Perfect Getaway. This is that Hawaiian thriller with Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, and Kiele Sanchez, which you can find out more about here. Hemsworth gets to play some dude named Kale.
  • Kale is not one of the stalkees in his gig, but I don't know if the same can be said for Arlen Escarpeta, who you might remember from We Are Marshall, or from The Ten, where he got Oliver Platt's Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation as a father figure. Arlen has picked up "a lead role" in the remake of Friday the 13th, which is shooting now down in Austin. Will he survive, or will he be a victim?
  • Finally, there's Alexis Dziena, who has nabbed a gig as a sister to Kristen Bell in When in Rome. Dziena will player Bell's younger sister "who's getting married on a whim." This is just one of many roles the actress has nabbed lately. She was in Fool's Gold, and just wrapped a part in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Review: Fool's Gold

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Romance », New Releases », Warner Brothers », Theatrical Reviews », Scripts »

By the time this review is over, I will have spent more time thinking about Fool's Gold than the writers of its script. This...thing...is one of the sloppiest pictures released by a major studio in recent memory. What can you say about a "romance" with no romance, a "comedy" with no laughs, an "adventure" with no excitement? Though I certainly wasn't rubbing my hands together in anticipation walking in to the theater, I thought this would at least succeed at being an enjoyable time waster. "Attractive people wearing few clothes in exotic locales -- I can handle watching that for a few hours," I thought to myself. But I was wrong. So very wrong. The whole affair is about as compelling as a two-hour fart.

I don't ask a great deal from romantic comedies. I don't need every one to be Annie Hall or When Harry Met Sally or Love, Actually. I don't even need them to be particularly good -- I kinda enjoyed The Holiday, for God's sake! Give me a few laughs, appealing leads, a warm squishy feeling, and you've done your job. Plainly, the makers of Fool's Gold did not do their job. Listen, I know Valentine's Day is coming up, so heed this warning -- if you see this crashing bore of a movie on a first date, your relationship is doomed, cursed even. Do not speak on the way home, avoid eye contact, just go your separate ways and don't speak of the evening again.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Fool's Gold' Poster Premiere!

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Drama », Romance », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Posters »

Last time Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson teamed up, they were trying to figure out How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Now, however, they're married ... and searching for treasure. Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Fool's Gold (click on the image for a larger version), directed by Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama, Hitch). In the film, which reunites the smokin' hot pair for the first time since 2003, Hudson and McConaughey play a married couple and former treasure hunters whose relationship has all but sunk to the bottom of the ocean. But when a new clue to the whereabouts of an exotic treasure surfaces, the two re-kindle their love for lost gold -- and each other -- while they head off in search of the elusive prize. Problem is, they're not the only ones looking to strike it rich. Joining Hudson and McConaughey on their adventure are Donald Sutherland, Ray Winstone and Alexis Dziena. Oh Kate, when will you stop being a fool and realize I'm the man of your dreams? Fool's Gold arrives in theaters on February 8.

Mac is Back (Again)

When Macaulay Culkin ended his nearly 10-year absence from the movies by starring as Michael Alig, a real-life, drug-addled, murderous, gay party-boy in Party Monster (a performance Roger Ebert described as "fearless"), it was clear that he was aggressively avoiding the mainstream cuteness in which he'd spent his entire childhood (though he did work the adorable on Will & Grace). Since then, Culkin has continued to pick his roles carefully, playing only a supporting role in Saved!, a well-review, smart indie comedy that was released two years ago.

According to this morning's Variety, it sounds like Culkin's latest break is over: He's agreed to star in Sex and Breakfast, an indie project being described as a dark comedy. The film, which was written and will be directed by first-time feature helmer Miles Brandman, tells the story of "a couple with problems in the bedroom who seek solace from a therapist. The shrink espouses group sex as a cure-all." Ah yes, the group sex-fix -- I just read about that the other day in Time.

Also in the cast are Alexis Dziena, Kuno Becker and Eliza Dushku; there's no indication of which role Culkin will play.
