Discuss: Why Does Everyone Hate Kirsten Dunst?

Well, Spider-Man is back in the headlines and it's official: Kirsten Dunst will be back for another turn as Peter Parker's main squeeze, Mary Jane. Now this might sound odd, but I feel like I've spent a lot of time defending Kirsten Dunst over the years. Not to the population at large mind you, but when you have those discussions with friends or family or maybe even the occasional reader out there about the actors you like or dislike, Dunst always shoots to the top of the Yuck, I So Hate Her list. That's why, today, I'm here to ask the big question of all you haters out there: What did Kirsten Dunst ever do to you?

Do a quick search on the internet for Dunst and stories pop up about stints in rehab (and it didn't help that her name worked so well with drunk), body snark on a level that would make a mean girl blush, and just about every unflattering comment you can think of -- for goodness sake, some of the sleazier wags out there thought the proof of Jake Gyllenhaal's homosexuality was the fact that he was dating her. But today I will come out of the closet and proclaim: My name is Jessica and I like Kirsten Dunst.

After the jump: find out why, and my picks for her top five films...

Casting Bites: Marcia Cross, Lily Rabe, and Matthew Rhys

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Casting »

From parents to friends to struggling lovers, here's the latest casting news, courtesy of Variety:

First up is one of the Desperate Housewives -- Marcia Cross. While her other co-stars have been dipping their toes into the cinematic waters, Cross has only spent her time on the boob tube, until now; she's starring in a new indie comedy called Peck. In yet another Hollywood science fair story, there's a kid named Peck (Keir Gilchrist) whose parents (Cross and Adam Arkin) force him to compete in a science fair (according to IMDb). There also seems to be some romance to the story, as Variety says that the kid "develops an unlikely friendship with the school's golden girl."

Dunst and Gosling Take a Walk in the Park for 'All Good Things'

Filed under: Drama », Romance », Images »

Above is an on-set glimpse of Kirsten Dunst and Ryan Gosling in their upcoming film, All Good Things. The actors were filming scenes in New York City's Carl Schurz Park, and you can check out a bunch of photos over at Just Jared.

As Jessica explained in January when Dunst signed on, the film focuses on two star-crossed loves, Gosling and Dunst. He's a rich young man, and she's a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. She goes missing, and "a sleazy detective begins to uncover information that could bring our golden boy to his knees." (The lovely Jeffrey Dean Morgan is playing the detective.)

The more I see Gosling's work, the more I appreciate it, though I can't help but wonder if pairing him with Dunst is a huge mistake. Then again, maybe he can pull a performance out of her that's reminiscent of the good old days. (I hope, I really hope, because this movie sounds cool.) At the very least, there's a number of great co-stars -- Kristen Wiig, Frank Langella, Diane Venora, Phillip Baker Hall, and more are on the roster.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Wants All the 'Good Things'

Filed under: Casting », Mystery & Suspense »

One thing that can be said about Jeffrey Dean Morgan is that he's stretching himself out for a number of different roles, rather than just sticking with one and slipping into typecast oblivion. That would've been easy after making many hearts a-flutter over his Denny Duquette in Grey's Anatomy, but since then, he's mixed it up with comedies about Russian Roulette television shows, a couple romcoms, a Supernatural stint, a gang drama, a huge superhero flick, a dark comedy about a how-to assassin video, and now a murder mystery.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that he's going to star with Kirsten Dunst and Ryan Gosling in the upcoming murder mystery of love -- All Good Things. Set in the 1980s, the film focuses on the heir to a real estate dynasty (Gosling), who falls for a young woman (Dunst) from the wrong side of the tracks. But then she disappears, and a "down-and-out" detective played by Morgan discovers clues that might lead to the truth, while "the political stakes get higher and people close to the case end up dead." (Last quote from Variety.)

Kirsten Dunst in Talks to Join Ryan Gosling in 'All Good Things'

It's funny how some actresses just seem to inspire the worst in critics; or in the case of Kirsten Dunst, she brings out the worst in just about everyone. I only ever seem to come across people who can't stand her. Ever since her kick-a** performance in Interview with The Vampire at the tender age of 12, she has been one of my favorite actresses; and I am even willing to overlook Get Over it. Variety reports that Dunst is in talks to star in All Good Things alongside Ryan Gosling. The period thriller is set in the go-go '80s and centers on a well-to-do young man (Gosling) who falls for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks (Dunst). When she turns up missing, a sleazy detective begins to uncover information that could bring our golden boy to his knees.

The film is the feature debut of documentary filmmaker Andrew Jarecki, who made his name as the director of Capturing the Friedmans -- a film that I can't recommend enough. News of Dunst's negotiations hit the Sundance circuit since she is in town promoting her directorial debut, Welcome. Gosling has already signed on the dotted line for Good Things, but Dunst is still in the middle of negotiations. The actress has already signed to star in Sweet Relief; the story of Marla Ruzicka, a relief worker in Iraq and Afghanistan during U.S. invasions; so, I would guess that if Dunst is planning on starring in Good Things as well, it is all going to come down to scheduling.
