Tobey Maguire Finds More Marital Dysfunction

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

One day he's getting tortured by the Taliban and then heads home to discover that his bad-boy brother is getting saucy with his wife. The next, he's taking part in a modern War of the Roses. Variety reports that Tobey Maguire is taking on more marital dysfunction by starring in Jacob Estes' new indie black comedy called The Details alongside Elizabeth Banks.

The pair (which was once set to be Banks and James McAvoy) will play a troubled married couple struggling with infidelity and other marital issues. But here's where things get strange: "their lives [are] further complicated by ravenous raccoons burrowing under the sod in their back yard. A disagreement over how to dispatch the pests creates a chain reaction of mishaps that include a murder by bow and arrow." There's nothing like a few coonies to ruin a marriage! Just in case that insane plot isn't enough to whet your appetite, the cast also contains Ray Liotta, Dennis Haysbert, Anna Friel, and Laura Linney, the latter playing an eccentric neighbor. (You can also check out many details of the plot here.)

Maguire reportedly decided to hop onto this project before heading back to Spider-Man land, and I say: "Huzzah!" As much as the webbed wonder is great, it's nice to see us one more reminder that Maguire has talents outside of comic superheroes.

'Land of the Lost' Finds a New Trailer

It really has been easy to forget that Land of the Lost comes out this summer -- in fact, it comes out in a mere 28 days, which either makes this second trailer a bit overdue, or just in the nick of time. I confess, I rolled my eyes at the concept back when it was originally announced (and how many television shows have managed to be remade into funny, modern movies?), but this trailer -- which just debuted over at Moviefone -- makes it look pretty amusing. I actually giggled a few times! I think this is largely due to the cast -- Will Ferrell, Anna Friel (loved her since A Midsummer Night's Dream, which you should see if you adore her too), and Danny McBride really do make this work. Maybe my sense of humor is just skewed into a 12-year-old's today, but try not to chuckle at Chaka's meeting with Holly.

Perhaps it'll run thin over the course of the film, but for now it looks like a nice, goofy break between explosions and grimy heroes. Watch it below and see what you think, if only so you can say "Elisabeth, how the heck can you laugh at a boob joke?" I don't know, but I did, and I make no apologies for it.

Moviefone Goes Behind the Scenes On 'Land of the Lost'

With all of the focus on Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, it's kind of easy to forget that Land of the Lost is also coming out this summer. The big-screen remake hits theaters on June 5, and Moviefone's Maggie Furlong was lucky enough to take a trip behind the scenes and bring you all kinds of fun secrets and video interviews with Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny McBride, Brad Siberling, and original co-creator Marty Krofft.

If you're as squeamish about the empty black eyes of the Sleestaks as I am, you might find this tidbit from Friel very comforting. Apparently she and her daughter Gracie had quite a thing for the lizard men: "She's only 2, but she strokes the sleestaks. They're quite handsome underneath those suits ... they're very tall. Hot sleestaks!" And the way you get into a Sleestak costume? Lots and lots of KY Jelly. (Seriously.)

If you're dying to know all about Lost before June, head over to Moviefone and check out their video and their write up. The actors address the story changes (what was once a 14 year old blonde is now a beautiful love interest), the special effects and the kitsch factor. And aren't you just dying to know what sparked jealousy off-screen between McBride, Ferrell, and Jorma "Chaka" Taccone ... and what producers did to resolve it? Go visit our Moviefone friends and find out.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive teaser poster for this summer's hotly-anticipated Land of the Lost, starring Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Anna Friel and Jorma Taccone. Based on the classic television series, Land of the Lost was directed by Brad Silberling and follows a has-been scientist (Ferrell), a crack-smart research assistant (Friel) and a redneck survivalist (McBride) who get sucked through time and spit out into an alternate universe -- one that finds them running from dinosaurs and weird reptiles called Sleestaks, while trying to figure a way out of this hybrid dimension. Really looking forward to watching Ferrell and McBride pair up on screen together, and with the "alternate universe" angle thrown in, I'm sure we're in store for all sorts of ridiculousness.

Land of the Lost arrives in theaters on June 5, 2009.

Reitman Taps Anna Friel and Jesse Eisenberg for 'The Wedding'

Man, Roger Dodger/Campbell Scott should have continued his teachings, rather than setting Jesse Eisenberg loose on the school cafeteria. It looks like he hasn't learned the delicate intricacies of women and romance quite yet!

The Hollywood Reporter
posts that Jason Reitman and Daniel Dubiecki are producing a new romantic comedy called The Wedding, which will star Eisenberg and Pushing Daisies star Anna Friel. Eisenberg will play a young man who is so infatuated with Friel's 30-something character that he crashes her wedding. Hmm. Maybe Roger should've steered completely clear of the kid, since escorts and Elizabeth Berkley seem to have led the kid right to Benjamin Braddock territory.

Reitman has cooked up a lot of interest for the film, but as of yet, no studios have signed to get this project in gear. I imagine it's only a matter of time. Reitman has a knack for picking solid films, and I've got a feeling that Eisenberg and Friel will play well off each other. But at the very least -- it'll give her something to do post-Daisies.

Anna Friel Journeys to 'The Land of the Lost'

Last October, Scott told you how Will Ferrell was heading to the big-screen Land of the Lost for Universal. However, instead of a family of three -- dad, son, and daughter -- this Hollywoodized version is getting a "disgraced paleontologist, his assistant, and a macho tour guide." I guess a feature comedy without the chance for romance made the original set-up less than desirable. Well, romance could still be had, but certainly not in a PC, or universally acceptable way.

So, the kids are out, and now the assistant has been found. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Will's paleontologist is lucky enough to get stuck in this lost land with Anna Friel, who will play his love interest (and, I assume, his assistant). You might remember the British actress from her shrill Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream, her troubled, love-seeking Marina in Me Without You, or maybe her role as Chuck in Pushing Daisies. I have to say -- Will Ferrell is one lucky geek of a man.

Now we just need an un-Savage macho man to round out the team -- perhaps one that tempts Anna with more manly endeavors? I guess the only thing that would suck more than being lost in a strange world is getting stuck, having a cute girlfriend, and then having the only human woman stolen away from you by some macho dude. Production is still slated to begin next month, so we should hear the final bit of casting soon.

Julie Delpy's 'The Countess' Faces Competition From Second Bathory Biopic

Filed under: Drama », Horror », Casting », Newsstand »

When Jessica Barnes first blogged about Julie Delpy's Elizabeth Bathory picture called The Countess, she also mentioned another one in the works -- Bathory, coming from Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko. Now Variety is giving out a little more information about the dueling, bloody biopics. First, Delpy's Countess. The actress/director has been keeping tight-lipped about her production, but it's gearing up for a modest $6.6 million, shooting in parts of Hungary and Slovakia where Bathory ruled. Delpy wrote the script, and is starring with Ethan Hawke and Vincent Gallo. How's that for a trio?

Now, Jakubisko's project has been described as a "feminist" adaptation -- a description which sounds a little silly considering that Delpy is the head of the other one, and he's a man, so it might not be the best distinction. Nevertheless, this project is said to have "a more epic setting," delving into her life from age 10 to age 45, when she died in imprisonment. He has "put his distinctive stamp on the battle sequences and constantly moves the action from manor houses to more than 20 different castles and chateaus, with 120 speaking characters and thousands of extras." If it sounds too epic to be pulled off -- the filming is already complete. While all sounds well and good, I'm not so sure his star can live up to Delpy. Jakubisko's feature stars Anna Friel. I've enjoyed some of her roles, especially her troubled Marina in Me Without You, but I can't help but fear that she'll be a whiney princess, and who wants wailing royalty?
