Who Wants to Live in Arkham Asylum?

Filed under: Horror », Fandom »

It's understandable if you don't get a shiver down your spine when you hear the name Danvers unless you're a fan of abandoned insane asylums, horror movies, or H.P. Lovecraft. But if you've caught the criminally underseen Session 9, which was written and directed by Brad Anderson, you'll know an apartment at the newly renovated Avalon Advantage in Danvers is not the hottest property investment on the market.

Session 9 is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, and it boasts a fine performance from David Caruso as well, with nary a pair of sunglasses in sight. And, most pantswettingly, it was actually filmed on location in the Danvers State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Danvers, MA. (Anderson also wrote and directed the equally excellent and underseen Transsiberian.)

As per the wonderful website Atlas Obscura, "While it was built with a surprisingly caring and modern attitude toward the mentally ill, by the 1930's the site was crowded, falling into disrepair, and was using shock therapies and lobotomies on a regular basis. The addition of criminals, alcoholics, and the mentally retarded to the overcrowded hospital made it very difficult for the hospital to help cure any of its mental patients. The hospital was shut down in 1992."

Harley Quinn Could Totally Sex Up Next Batman Movie

The latest trailer is out for the new Batman video game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and it's a pretty rad Harley Quinn character preview. Quinn (voiced, of course, by Arleen Sorkin) is just one of several Batman villains featured in the game, which has already received rave remarks from fans and gamers alike (with some going so far as to call it the game of the year). Though she'll be joined by the likes of the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc and Mr. Freeze (all of whom will most likely get their own trailers too), Quinn is no doubt a fan favorite and a villain folks (including myself) would love to see show up in a live-action film.

Of course with the Joker situation the way it is right now, chances are that won't happen for a good while -- but after watching this all-too-brief trailer (and scoping out the screengrabs below), I can't help but be seduced by this gal's sexy wickedness -- she almost reminds me of a nurse-turned-stripper-turned-serial killer ... and, on paper, that's a pretty awesome villain. Check out the gallery of screengrabs below and the trailer after the jump.

What do you think -- is there a way to work Harley Quinn into the next film? Please ...

Create Your Own

Okay, I know, I know -- you've probably overdosed on Batman by now. You get it. You're seeing the damn movie this weekend. The Dark Knight. You know its name. It's on the schedule right after Junior's soccer game. End of story. Say no more. But I just had to show you this little piece of viral marketing that's just all sorts of spooky. Verizon just put out an online thingy where you can upload your photo and be instantly transported to Arkham Asylum (that place where all the nutty folks are sent in the Batman universe). Check out the video I created up above (how loony do I look?), then head on over to their site, create your own and/or mess around with your pals at work. Seriously, what else do you have to do today? Those TPS Reports can wait an extra hour. Go get your freak on!
