Polanski Loses First Bid for Release
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Politics », Other Festivals »
The complicated story of Roman Polanski and his flight from the US over 30 years ago is starting to get very, very simple – at least when it comes to the law. The NYT reports that Polanski (and his legal representatives) have lost the appeal to have the director released from a Zurich jail following his arrest for a 2005 international warrant. The appeal was rejected by the Swiss Justice Ministry and a spokesperson for the ministry was quoted as saying the reason they rejected the request was that they felt "there is a high risk of flight" -- and it's not like you can blame them, the man does have a habit of disappearing when in the middle of a sticky situation. That hasn't stopped his legal representatives from asking Switzerland's highest criminal court to free Polanski, but representatives from the Justice Ministry even submitted letters explaining their opposition to freeing the director. However, there is still a chance the director could be freed, and according to the NYT, "The Federal Criminal Court has said it will rule in the case in the "next weeks," and a verdict in either direction can be appealed to the country's highest judicial body, the Federal Tribunal."
Wesley Snipes Finally Arrested
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »
So I guess we shouldn't always bet on black, huh? Yes, it's Friday evening and before you head out for the weekend, we thought you might want to know that Wesley Snipes has finally been arrested for tax fraud. The actor traveled from Africa (where he's currently filming Gallowwalker) to turn himself in to authorities in Ocala, Florida. After pleading not guilty to charges which include "falsely claiming millions of dollars in tax refunds," Snipes was released on $1 million bond.
He now intends to travel back to Africa to complete filming (because celebrities are allowed to travel wherever they want when they're arrested). Actually, the judge granted permission for Snipes to finish things up (phew, it sure would be a sin if Gallowwalker was delayed or, God forbid, shut down for good), though he must return to the States by January 10 -- at which time he will be ordered to surrender his passport, restricted to traveling only within the continental United States. If convicted, Snipes could wind up in jail for a total of 16 years -- though, most likely, he'll get probation and have to pay back a whole lot of money. I mean, who in their right mind would sentence Blade to 16 years behind bars? Who would we get to fight all those nasty vampires, or to star in those crappy direct-to-DVD action pics? In Gallowwalker, Snipes plays a cowboy who's placed in charge of killing zombies. And it's being shot in Africa. Who knows. We'll keep you updated on both the film and Snipes' legal troubles.
Haley Joel Heads to Jail?
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »
Wow, what a strange turn of events for young Haley Joel Osment. See kids, this is what happens when you make stupid decisions. Not long ago, the Sixth Sense star was driving through a suburb of Los Angeles at 1am when he accidentally ran his 1995 Saturn straight into a brick pillar and flipped over. The actor was later taken to a hosipital where, surprisingly, his injuries were fairly minor.
However, what we did not know at the time was that Osment's blood alcohol level after the crash measured in at .16, twice the legal limit and higher than Mel Gibson's (.12) at the time of his arrest. Not only that, but police also found marijuana in the car. Damn Haley, you were out having a good ol' time, huh? Needless to say, Osment must now surrender to police, as he will be facing charges that could land him in jail for up to six months. Yeah, now here's where I want to smack the crap out of the kids who let the boy get in that car when he was obviously tanked. Man, I wish they could be penalized in some way. Hopefully Haley learned his lesson.

Man of the Year Heads to Rehab!
After a solid 20 years of sobriety, Robin Williams slipped back into a nasty relationship with the bottle recently. However, the actor decided to check himself into rehab before things got out of hand, and resulted in Williams spewing anti-Death to Smoochy remarks during a routine traffic stop. If all goes well, he'll be back in the swing of things this fall as he prepares to promote the upcoming Man of the Year, in which he stars as, well, the man of the year.
Madonna Quits Acting!
Yes, you heard that right -- Madonna has decided to give up acting ... forever! Not because she doesn't like appearing in films. Oh no, she's just fed up with the way people automatically assume her acting in a movie spells disaster. Says Madonna, "How can any film survive if everyone says it's going to be a flop from the very day the project is even conceived?" Heck, I don't know -- perhaps you should ask Uwe Boll that question. Fear not fans, the singer-turned-actress will continue to spit out crappy albums for the rest of eternity.
Lou Diamond Phillips Arrested!
After responding to a domestic disturbance early Friday morning, police arrested Lou Diamond Phillips for allegedly attacking his live-in girlfriend with a La Bamba DVD ... full-screen version! (Okay, I added that last part on in order to sneak in a La Bamba reference. On second thought, is La Bamba even available on DVD? If so, anyone want to admit owning it?) According to authorities, problems began when a verbal argument between Phillips and his girlfriend turned physical. Released on his own recognizance, it doesn't appear Phillips will have to Stand and Deliver his side of the story to a judge any time soon.
