eBay Your Way to a Role in 'Iron Man 2' -- While Fighting Cancer

Love Iron Man? Hate cancer? Have a lot of money? (I knew that third one would be the toughie.) If you can answer YES to all three questions, then you just might stand a chance of walking through a scene in Marvel's Iron Man 2. Seems that the Stand Up to Cancer organization (you've probably seen their promo at the movies) is auctioning off one HELL of a slick Iron Man 2 package. And here's what the winner shall receive:

A visit to the set (complete with photo tour), a meet & greet with cast and crew members, a "walk-on / extra" role in the sequel, and two tickets to the world premiere of Iron Man 2. And you'll even get to walk down the red carpet at the world premiere, completely geeked out and feeling justifiably heroic because YOU donated the biggest chunk of change to a powerful new cancer research foundation. It all sounds so great ... but who knows how much this package will go for?

You can see the full details over at ComicsPriceGuide.com, and then you can check out the eBay auction page right here. (As of September 7 the bidding stands at $5,100.) Anyone want to lay a friendly bet on how high this auction will go?

(Thanks to my pal Ed and his Marvel Movies! Facebook page for this win-win news item. To the eventual winner, I say this: Well done, sir. Or madam. Well done.)

Poll: Superman's Cape or Madonna's Wedding Dress ... Which Would You Buy?

Ever wished you could run around in Superman's outfit, or be a wedding-day virgin (cough) like Madonna? Now's your big chance. BBC reports that in Las Vegas March 15 and 16, a slew of items from movies and pop culture will be auctioned off.

The collection, privately owned by developer Anthony Pulgliese, is valued at over $5 million. Personally, I can't fathom having $5 million just sitting around waiting for me to spend it on a bunch of collectible stuff, no matter how cool it is, but maybe some of your folks have a spare million or two down in your couch cushions, and you'd like to spend it buying memorabilia (side note: if that description fits you, email me before you head to the auction ... I know some indie filmmakers out there who could use that money for a better purpose ...).

Anyhow, in case you're into collecting, here's a list of the items that will be up for grabs. If you were going to attend this auction and had the cash to spare, which would you bid on?

How Much Does it Cost to Be an Extra with Will Ferrell? $47,100

Filed under: Comedy », Fandom »

I like Will Ferrell as much as the next girl, but I don't think I like him enough to drop $47,100. The Hollywood Reporter tells us a winner has emerged in the auction for a cameo role in Ferrell's next film, Step Brothers. Erik had first reported on the auction last week, and just in case you are wondering, this isn't just a shameless cash grab -- Uwe Boll; I'm looking in your direction. All of the proceeds from the auction are going to a charitable organization called the Cancer for College foundation. The charity is run by Ferrell's former fraternity buddy, who is a two-time survivor of Hodgkin's Disease.

So who was willing to drop almost fifty grand for the part of 'Guy in Bathroom Stall #2'?. The winning bid came from an anonymous bidder in Texas who was bidding on behalf of his son. The bidder told THR, "I lost my mother to ovarian cancer a few years ago so I feel fortunate that my 10-year-old and I are able to participate in an event involving Cancer for College and Will Ferrell. It's a great opportunity for him to both hang out with 'Ricky Bobby' and learn a valuable life lesson -- that it's important to help people who need help by whatever means you are able to do so". Step Brothers is the latest collaboration for Ferrell and Adam McKay with Judd Apatow producing. The film stars Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two ultra-competitive step-brothers vying for their parents affection. Brothers is currently still in production, but is scheduled for release on July 25th, 2008.

Will Ferrell Auctions Off Role in 'Step Brothers'

Filed under: Fandom », Movie Marketing »

Whenever I see the word 'auction' somewhere, I immediately know my broke ass won't be able to afford whatever it is they're auctioning off. So until I see the headline: Will Ferrell Randomly Gives 'Step Brothers' Role to Editor of Cinematical.com, I'll have to settle for reporting on the auctions, and not bidding. But if you do have some cash to spare, you enjoy Will Ferrell's films, and would love to brag to your friends that you're "in the New Will Ferrell Flick!!" -- then this could be right up your alley. According to BBC News, Ferrell is auctioning off a cameo role (Guy in Bathroom Stall #2?) in Step Brothers, the next Ferrell/Adam McKay big-screen collaboration. All proceeds will go to Cancer for College, which is a fantastic little charity that helps provide college scholarships to current and former cancer patients. And as Ferrell notes: "What a perfect Christmas present for your son or daughter. It is the surefire way to win the present of the year award. Support this amazing cause by buying them me."

Written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, and directed by McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights), Step Brothers stars Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two guys who become competitive step brothers following the marriage of their single parents. Ferrell and Reilly last squared off against one another as friends-turned-enemies in Talladega Nights, and I'm sure there will be a lot more of that hysterical back-and-forth in this latest project. And speaking of projects, I think Ferrell just had a great idea for his next film -- some actor looking for extra cash auctions himself off to the highest bidder. Oh wait, Brett Ratner already went there. Perhaps he can direct then?

Johnny Five is Alive ... On eBay!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Family Films », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

I don't know whether to laugh at how ridiculous this is, or cry because pieces of my childhood are now being auctioned off! MTV Movies Blog has found none other than Johnny Five up for sale on eBay. In case you slept through (or had discerning taste during) the 1980's, Johnny Five is the lovable, wisecracking robot from 1986's Short Circuit and 1988's Short Circuit 2 (which had a hilarious robot chase scored to Bonnie Tyler's "I Need A Hero"). You can head to this link to bid on the item, just be aware that the bidding starts at $100,000. And I'd imagine shipping and handling is going to be a real bitch! But hey, isn't that a small price to pay for probably the best conversation piece you could ever have in your home? "Love what you've done with the place, Janet! Is this coffee table from Pier 1 Imports? Hey...uh...is that the robot from Short Circuit?"

The robot is five feet tall, cost over $175,000 to construct in 1983, and it looks like it's been kept remarkably clean and free of rust. Fifteen different robots were made for Short Circuit and its sequel, but according to the bid page "most of these were mock-ups, half-robots and other non-animatronic pieces." The model being auctioned is "the only complete Johnny Five that survived, and is the only one known to exist." Should you have concerns that this is some imposter giant talking robot and not a movie star, the package "is accompanied with a letter of authenticity from Eric Allard, the robotic special effects supervisor who made this robot for the film." And the sweetest feature is that you get "a specially designed exo-skeleton apparatus (that) was made to control all of the mechanical features of the robot during filming." If I'm reading that correctly, that means you might just be able to make Johnny Five come alive in your own home! It all sounds really cool, but for the price they're asking, I hope it comes with Steve Guttenberg.

If you guys could own any piece of movie memorabilia, (other than Johnny Five of course), what would it be? Thinking small and since all this Short Circuit talk has me nostalgic for the 80's, I'd love to have the original Gizmo from Gremlins in my apartment. I'd keep him far away from the bath tub, of course.

Uwe Boll Auctions Off A Role In 'Far Cry'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Movie Marketing », Games and Game Movies »

While we all know that the notorious director Uwe Boll likes to act a little nutty now and then, I don't think anyone could have seen this coming. Boll is attempting to auction off a role in his new film Far Cry on eBay. This is just the latest in a series of console-based entertainment that Boll just can't seem to stay away from. Up for grabs is an undisclosed role for the low price of a little over $3000, but you will have to cover your own travel and accommodations. The film is based on UBI Soft's first-person shooter game about an ex-special forces agent for hire stranded on a mysterious island out to rescue his client; the plucky female photojournalist Valerie Constantine. So far, the only casting we have from the film was the rumored addition of Til Schweiger, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Whether the auction is a desperate attempt for publicity or a genuine casting crisis, when it comes to Boll nothing should surprise us. One of his latest films (and there does seem to be an awful lot of them), Postal, managed to offend just about everyone with a gag about 9/11. So in the history of Boll's publicity stunts, auctioning off a movie role might not seem so bad, right? But here's where it gets a little embarrassing: so far Boll has pulled in zero bids. It almost makes you feel sorry for the guy, but then I remember that Bloodrayne 2 teaser and the feeling passes.

On the Block: Staff of Ra, Peter Parker's Wrestling Costume, H.R. Giger Alien, More!

Filed under: Action », Classics », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Games and Game Movies »

I'm a sucker for a good memorabilia auction. Autographed movie stills and DVDs are cool and everything, but there's nothing like having that memorable piece of the film, that object that defines a certain movie's experience. For me, as I've stated before, it was Maggie Gyllenhaal's Satanist eyelash curlers from Cecil B. Demented. Luckily, only one other person was interested, so I was able to nab it and it never got anywhere near the thousands, like many prop auctions do. Well, now there is the mother of all auctions gearing up, and if I won the lottery, I would be snatching up a few of these goodies.

For the most part, it's a comic book/action fan's wet dream come true, or rather, the wet dream of the really rich and well-off geek. On the superhero side of things, there's: Christopher Reeve's first Superman suit, a Val Kilmer bat suit from Batman Forever and my very personal favorite that makes me sigh in middle-class angst -- that goofy suit that Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker wore in the ring when he first became Spider-Man. For the more sci-fi fans, there's a Spock tunic from the first season of Star Trek, Arnie's T-3 costume, an H. R. Giger creature suit from Alien, the Staff of Ra from Raiders of the Lost Arc and for all those ladies with Wolverine fantasies: Hugh Jackman's claws from X2. Sigh. Any rich people out there want to donate to my movie prop cause?

The auction comes from Profiles in History, the people who previously sold the Cowardly Lion costume for almost a million bucks. So yes, this isn't your run-of-the-mill eBay auction. Personally, since I can't afford any of these things, I'm going to wait and see if Kevin Smith buys the original car from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, because I'm not sure he ever spoke more true words than Brodie's statement in Mallrats: "Hey, now. Be fair. Everyone wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride."

Obi Wan's Cloak From Star Wars Goes On Block

Oh, I know there are a slew of you out there who would love to be that guy -- all walking around the halls of your high school sporting Obi-Wan's robe, tellin' it like it is. Showing up to the office with authority: "Oh yeah, you want me to sit in that cubicle? Well, no one puts Obi-Wan in the corner!" Women would flock to you like they do in those annoying Axe deodorant commercials (Hey, I wear Axe and nothing like that ever happens to me!), while a day wouldn't go by without a high-five and a few dreamy stares. And then you wake up, realizing: "Holy crap, I just spent $100,000 on a freaking brown robe!"

Yes, that's (approximately) how much bidding will start at for a chance to own the original robe worn by Sir Alec Guinness in Star Wars. Oh, but that's not all -- folks can also pick up costumes worn in films like Titanic, Indiana Jones and Evita, as well as a number of James Bond's suits, when they go under the gavel at Bonhams Auctioneers. Roughly 350 to be exact, all provided by the London-based costume maker Angels. Tim Angel, of Angels, is honored to produce all these memorable movie costumes, but at the same time they could potentially hurt business. He notes, "The flip-side of creating such iconic costumes, that become so very famous and so firmly associated with key movies, is that they can never be used in other films or productions, nor can they be made available from our fancy dress shop."

I'm not sure what I would do with a brown robe worth $100,000. Where do you wear it? Could it be used as, like, an after shower robe? Do you hang it in the closet? For you Star Wars fanatics out there, is the price tag worth it? And, if you could own the original robe, what in the world would you do with it?

Bogart, Hepburn Memorabilia Goes Under Gavel

Filed under: Classics », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Cinematical Indie »

I think we can all agree that we're a little more preoccupied with celebrities than we should be. It's scary when I know way more about about people I've never met than my neighbors -- without batting an eye I could name Brad Pitt's girlfriends in chronological order, it's sick. Don't worry; I'm not about to hop on a soapbox about the evils of celebrity culture. Most "stargazing" is relatively harmless, although if you were Steven Spielberg or Jodie Foster, you probably wouldn't agree.

One of the most benign past-times of Hollywood lovers is collecting memorabilia. So while you and I might indulge in the occasional In Touch magazine or collector's edition DVD, for others collecting is a serious and expensive business. 20th Century Fox's charity auction in New York consisted of letters and contracts from some of the biggest names in Hollywood history. Included in the auction were a signed letter by Marilyn Monroe (sold for $7,000) and contracts from Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and John Steinbeck. Steinbeck's contract for handing over the rights to The Grapes of Wrath was the big-ticket item of the day, netting $24,000. Proceeds from the auction; totaling $267,280, went to the Motion Picture & Television Fund, providing financial assistance to struggling actors and directors. The charity might be a worthy cause, but I can't imagine forking over almost $25,000 for paperwork. What memorabilia, if any, would you be willing to take out a small loan for?

Miramax to auction props

Filed under: Drama », Music & Musicals », Disney », Family Films », Newsstand », Weinstein Brothers »

As part of their divorce from Miramax, starting Friday Disney will be selling off "thousands of props and wardrobe items from Miramax's Weinstein era" via an online auction. In addition to opening up a hell of a lot of closet space in the Disney house, the auctions will also benefit each company's charities, so it's warm and fuzzy all around. On the Disney side, proceeds will go into the coffers of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, while the Weinstein brothers will use the auction as a chance to kick off their new Max Family Foundation, named in honor of their father.

Among the items up for grabs (at eBay and Premiereprops.com) are one of Renée Zellweger's size -4 dresses from Chicago and Michael Meyer's mask from Halloween H20, as well as some bits from Spy Kids, Shakespeare in Love, and The Cider House Rules. Get clicking, kids. Just keep telling yourself it's for a good cause - that makes it ok to spend, spend, spend!
