She used to be just the normal high school girl -- big smiles, kid cuts, and simple shirts. Then, Avril Lavigne dropped out of school to become a star, and morphed into a teen punk princess belting out the pop songs. However, in addition to her forays into music, she's been dipping her toes into film. She took on a voice role in Over the Hedge, then popped up in Fast Food Nation and The Flock. Now, rumor has it she's picked up her first major role.

According to TheLondonPaper, she's said: "I've got a film role coming up -- something you wouldn't expect from me, something deep and dark." There's a lot that I wouldn't expect from Lavigne, but I don't know if "deep and dark" is it -- not because I've thought of her in those sorts of roles, but because that sort of tone is how a number of actresses get their start -- being dark, being the victim, popping up in a thriller or horror, etcetera. Then again, maybe we'll be even more surprised and it will be some big dramatic piece.

Oh, that wacky George Clooney: He's announced that he'd like to outwit the paparazzi, who are continually linking him with this actress or that one, by going out to dinner every night with a different celebrity, whether male or female, and letting everyone draw (incorrect) conclusions. Today's my little sister's birthday, George ... she's not famous, but she'd love to help you thwart photographers and gossipmongers.

So how many of the following news items do you think were staged by the celebrities themselves, either for publicity or to intentionally diminish the credibility of gossip columns?

• Actress/singer Avril Lavigne has not been handling the paparazzi in such a classy fashion. Last weekend, she had to apologize for spitting on some of the photographers.
• Peter Sarsgaard (pictured at right, mmm) and Maggie Gyllenhaal have announced the birth of their daughter. The baby, born Tuesday night, is named Ramona. No other details are available, although I guess that refutes the rumor I heard about Sarsgaard being spotted holding hands on the beach this week with Clooney.

The IMDB profile for the highly under-wraps Fast Food Nation is still suspiciously sparse, but there's a press release going around today that's leaking a wealth of information. Is it still called Coyote? That's unclear, but production has apparently been completed on the Richard Linklater drama inspired by Eric Schlosser's non-fiction expose, and here are two things about it that we didn't previously know: the film will be distributed by Fox Searchlight, and it costars both grizzled veteran Kris Kristofferson, and young fauxpunk Avril Lavigne. Will the two of them join forces with producer Malcom McLaren to form some kind of supergroup? We're keeping our fingers crossed.
