Is Judy Greer Finally Getting Her Due?

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

I've been following Judy Greer for the last eleven years, ever since I nestled down into a movie theater seat and watched Jawbreaker for the first time. Fern Mayo/Vylette was complete absurdity, whether wide-eyed and mousey or tarted up and sassy. In no time, Greer started to make her way into high profile films from Three Kings to The Wedding Planner, and I was sure that this mean big things quickly -- especially after the 2003-2004 year of The Hebrew Hammer, 13 Going on 30, The Village, and her cock-eyed boob work as Kitty Sanchez in Arrested Development. But still, more of the same -- until now.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that she has joined Alexander Payne's The Descendents, along with Beau Bridges, Matthew Lillard, and Robert Forster. I wish I could tell you that she's playing George Clooney's wife, who ends up in a coma after a catamaran accident, but I imagine that honor is most likely going to the already signed Mary Birdsong (Reno 911!), who is much closer to Clooney's age.

Nevertheless, this gig is an addition to a big list of starring and co-starring roles. Next up, she stars opposite Patrick Wilson in Barry Munday, which Peter Martin just called a film that transcends "a familiar plot with sharp dialogue and awkward grace." Topping that off, she's got Marmaduke (not the greatest, but certainly high profile), Peep World with Michael C. Hall, Love and Other Drugs with Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Henry's Crime, with Vera Farmiga and Keanu Reeves. Will she finally get her due? It's about darned time!

News Bites: Alyssa Milano Grabs a Boyfriend and Elisabeth Shue Bulks Up

It looks like Dan Aykroyd better work fast if he wants to get Alyssa Milano in the upcoming Ghostbusters sequel -- she's starting to line up the feature gigs. Following her horror stint in Pathology, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Milano is grabbing a rom-com. She'll star and produce My Girlfriend's Boyfriend, which might sound like a sexuality-bending role for the actress, but really it's just typical. She'll play a woman who meets two perfect men and must decide between them. One (played by Christopher Gorham) is a struggling novelist, while the other (Michael Landes) is an ad exec. Where the girlfriend fits in is anyone's guess. However, the pic does have Beau Bridges and Carol Kane in additional roles, so there's that going for it.

Meanwhile, remembering the tough women I was asking for? We're getting at least one on the big screens soon with Elisabeth Shue. TMZ posted a snap of her shooting Piranha 3-D, and as you can see above, she's sporting some rather impressive pipes these days. They should do a good job against those flesh-hungry fish, or at least provide them with some good muscle to chew on. It's just a waste that it's just for a niche film remake. But could this mean -- maybe just maybe -- a possible future as an action heroine? It would be a waste for those pipes to be forgotten once Piranha is done filming, and we already know she has the acting chops to go with it.

Check Out the New 'Max Payne' Posters

It's funny how little things can make a big difference. When the first poster was released from the big-screen version of Max Payne, I have to tell you; I was pretty underwhelmed. But my opinion of the design has improved now that I've gotten a gander at the two new posters for the flick (see larger versions of both in the gallery below). Although, I have to ask, who knew that Mr. Payne was such a 'shoe-gazer'? The original Max seemed a bit more thick-skinned than his feature film version; Wahlberg makes the man look downright depressed at times.

Mark Wahlberg stars as Payne, a cop who has lost his family and partner at the hands of a powerful crime syndicate. When he is left to his own devices, our hero sets out on a mission of revenge for his loved ones, and discovering some unnatural secrets along the way. Starring alongside Wahlberg are Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) as Mona Sax, Beau Bridges as Payne's friend and mentor, and Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges as an IA agent.

We finally got a look at the trailer back in July, and if you are fan of the series, you probably noticed that the film has taken it's look from the original game. Payne was directed by John Moore, who has the dubious credit of being behind the remake of The Omen back in 2006. But, to be fair, the flick seems like an easy sell. Wahlberg seems suited to the more 'violent' strain of moviemaking. Plus, once you throw in the pre-existing fan base, and competition-free release date, Fox should be able to rake in some serious dough.

Max Payne will arrive in theaters on October 17th.

More On-Set Photos from 'Max Payne'

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », 20th Century Fox », Games and Game Movies », Images »

It looks like things are getting pretty destructive on the set of the video game adaptation, Max Payne. Slash Film has new on-set photos for John Moore's (The Omen) crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as the undercover cop and noir hero; and even though Wahlberg doesn't make an appearance in this latest batch, (you can see him in full scowl here), we do get a glimpse of the action that Moore has planned.

Payne originally centered on an undercover DEA cop whose family had been murdered by a gang of junkies. In a hunt for revenge, he becomes obsessed with tracking down the crime family running the drug racket in big bad New York City. Beau Thorne's script kept some of the game's original story, but has changed some details for the big screen. Now, years after the loss of his family, Payne notices similarities between what happened to his wife and child, and a series of gruesome murders taking place. Some of the characters from the game series that will be making an appearance in the film are Mona Sax (played by Mila Kunis), mob-boss James Lupino, and veteran cop, B.B. Hensley (played by Beau Bridges).

There are still some concerns from fans that Moore will be aiming for a PG-13 rating, and I still can't get my head around that decision. Why even bother bringing a shoot-em up game like Payne to the screen if you are going to cut out half the fun?

Max Payne is expected to arrive in theaters on October 17th.

Beau Bridges Mentors Max Payne

Filed under: Action », Casting », Games and Game Movies »

I'm usually not surprised by the casting in action films, but I have to say -- this upcoming Max Payne flick is definitely making me wonder whether it will be a run-of-the-mill, fluff action flick or one worth critical attention. First came Mark Wahlberg, who was a decent and unsurprising pick. But then Mila Kunis, of all people, was added to the roster. It was a bit surprising, considering the fact that a vengeful assassin is a big jump from her usual work in comedy and some crappy horror work like American Psycho Ii.

Now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Beau Bridges has signed on to play B.B. Hensley, a former cop who mentors Max Payne and helps him hunt down "a cunning, ruthless killer." That makes two rumors true, as both Kunis and Bridges have signed on, so hopefully we'll find out soon if the rest of the rumored participants have signed. IMDb lists Ludacris, Donal Logue, Chris O'Donnell, and Kate Burton.

For the Payne-free readers out there, this is a big-screen adaptation of a shooter game where Payne is a cop out for revenge after his wife and baby are murdered. Production kicked off on March 3 in Toronto.

Mischa Barton Set to Star in Don't Fade Away

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Romance », Casting », Newsstand », Cinematical Indie »

To be honest, I think when most people heard that Mischa Barton had left The OC, everyone was waiting for her career to take the inevitable nosedive. I'm guessing being lumped in with the Paris Hilton and Brandon Davis party crowd probably didn't help much in the respectability department either. There had been rumors that Mischa's character had been killed off due to her bad-mouthing of the show and general naughty behavior. Well, it's all water under the bridge now since the teen soap has gotten the axe, and Barton has managed to set up several film roles for 2007.

Variety reports that Barton is set to star in the indie drama Don't Fade Away for first-time director Luke Kasdan (nephew of famed writer-director Lawrence Kasdan). Kasdan's drama stars Ryan Kwanten and Barton as a Manhattan couple that are forced to deal with a father's illness. Rounding out the cast is the unlikely combination of Ja Rule and Beau Bridges. Since I never consistently watched The OC and I've tried to remain blissfully ignorant when it comes to the "Kiddie Table" of Hollywood gossip, I'll have to wait to see if Barton can transform herself into a leading lady ... or whether High School drama and hair tossing are the sum total of her talents.

Beau Bridges Talks Stargate Movies

I have to admit that I'm a pretty big fan of the original Stargate film. Sure, there are one or two cringe-worthy moments -- particularly the one where the "mentally challenged" guy tries to run to safety in glorious slo-mo during a firefight but instead, gets blown up. I'm sorry, but that sequence made me chuckle instead of cry. It was just so much unexpected cheese --- almost as if it came from another movie. I know, cynical and jaded, right? Yeah, that's me. Other than that, and one or two minor issues, the film was a solid piece of Sci-Fi / Action filmmaking that I've watched several more times and continue to enjoy.

I found it a little strange that no sequel to the film was ever produced. Maybe it was too hard to get Kurt Russell and James Spader in the same room? For whatever reason, the producers of the film decided that the interests of the story and the fans would better be served on television -- and thus, Stargate SG-1 the TV series was born. After its debut, the series became a monster hit lasting eight seasons so far and spawning a spin-off of its own called Stargate: Atlantis. And that pretty much brings us up to date on the world of Stargate. That is, until actor Beau Bridges recently let slip some details concerning developments in the Stargate world.

According to our buddies over at Coming Soon, Bridges, while at the premiere of Steven Soderberg's The Good German, was asked what's in the future for the long-running Stargate SG-1 series. His answer: movies. According to Bridges: "They're talking about doing a couple of movies. I haven't actually signed on the dotted line, but there is talk about it." As you may know, Bridges plays Major General Hank Landry on Stargate SG-1, so it makes sense that he would probably know at least some details concerning any future theatrical plans for the current series. According to Bridges, he hasn't actually seen a script yet but when asked if the scripts were finished, he said: "Yes, I think they must be. Yes." So Stargate fans, if you've been waiting for the franchise's glorious return to the silver screen, you just may get you wish.
