Cinematical's Birthday Contest: You Pick the Winner!

Filed under: Site Announcements », Contests »

For our birthday, we asked you to send us pictures of your film-related collections, and we got some truly geekerific entries -- so many that we just can't choose a winner. Besides, we know how much our readers like to give us their opinions, and you're sure to have one about some of these.

The entries are listed in no particular order after the jump. You have until Tuesday, April 11 at 11:59EST to vote in the comments for your favorite. The entry with the most votes will get the $200 Amazon gift certificate, and three runners-up will get one of our spectacular, rare, and highly desirable Cinematical tshirts. ONE VOTE per person/email address (and yes, we will check and eliminate dupes, this isn't American Idol here). Contestants, you can, however, get all your friends and relations to come and vote for you, so point 'em this way.

Entries below the fold, check out our readers' spectacular odes to movie geekdom.

So Are You Telling Us Nobody Wants a $200 Gift Certificate?

Filed under: Fandom », Contests »

Okay, lovely Cinematical readers. Perhaps you missed it the first time around, but we're having a little contest here to celebrate Cinematical's first birthday. With prizes and everything! To refresh your memory, here's the dealio: all you have to do is enter is take a pic of whatever cheesy or super-cool movie memorabilia you have in your apartment, house or whereever you live. We know you've got some. Maybe you own every Star Wars action figure ever made, and you display them on your mantel. Maybe you have a collection of E.T. toys. Maybe you have a life-sized Spider-Man cutout hanging out in your living room. Maybe you're still hanging on to that Farrah Fawcett t-shirt you stole from your dad's dresser drawer.

Whatever it is, take a picture of it, and email it to james(dot)rocchi(at)cinematical(dot)com. We've extended the deadline to 11:59PM EST, Friday, March 31. So get that digital camera out, take a pic, and send it in already! First prize will be a $200 Amazon gift certificate. Two runners-up will get one of our snazzy Cinematical t-shirts.

Rules - boring, but necessary - are below the fold.

Happy Birthday, Dracula

Seventy-five years ago today the film version of Bram Stoker's Dracula starring Bela Lugosi debuted. While my estimation puts the number of Dracula movies made since then at about roughly twenty-seven gajillion, Lugosi's portrayal of the blood-sucking vampire still remains the most recognized. The role brought the Hungarian-born Lugosi much success, and he appeared in several other horror films including The Black Cat (both the 1934 and 1941 versions) and The Wolf Man. Ultimately, his new found fame led to typecasting, and eventually obscurity appearing in a handful of Ed Wood's films. In the quarter of a century that has passed since then, and perhaps thanks to Martin Landau's compassionate portrayal of the actor in Tim Burton's Ed Wood, people today have a more accurate perception of the actor and his contribution to the world of cinema. So yeah, the title reads "Happy Birthday, Dracula," but I'm raising a glass of Type A negative to the great Lugosi, as well. Cheers.
