Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams Sign Up for a 'Blue Valentine'

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Casting »

News first broke about Blue Valentine back in 2007, with the quite unique and distinct plot of "a couple whose relationship is jeopardized when they find themselves in different places in their lives." We're getting only a wee bit more now, two years later, as the film jumped out of ThinkFilm and finally hits production, but at least it's matched with leads who will make it interesting.

Variety reports that Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams have signed on to star in the indie drama, which will follow a couple in a failing marriage. "As their relationship hits the rocks, they recall better days." Derek Cianfrance, who will direct, penned the script with Cami Delavigne and Joey Curtis, while Mike Vogel, John Doman, and Maryann Plunkett fill in the rest of the cast.

At this rate, Gosling will run through all of Hollywood's blondes in no time -- Rachel McAdams, Kirsten Dunst, Williams... But in all seriousness, I've got a feeling these two will make a good pair, and maybe they'll both tap into their high school television angst as they reminisce. Haven't we always been waiting for the watery Breaker High to meet Dawson's Creek?

Williams Puts Films on Hold to Mourn Ledger's Death

In my opinion, Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were both coming into their own when Ledger passed away early last week. The day before Ledger's death, I had a chance to watch Williams absolutely kill in the Sundance flick Incendiary -- her greatest performance yet, in my opinion. Both actors (who were married engaged, but separated) were approaching super-stardom, however we're now left to track the future career of only one. And regarding her future career, People reports that Michelle Williams will put all her films on hold for an undetermined amount of time while she grieves the loss of Ledger.

The actress had just finished shooting her last scene for the film Mammuth in Sweden when she heard the bad news, and now production on Blue Valentine, her next flick, has been postponed (it was supposed to begin shooting on February 25). The film stars Williams and Ryan Gosling as a couple struggling with their marriage. A source close to the production told People, "We will hold off until she is ready. The production is in the process of sorting it out in respect to her. We're hoping she will still come back and do the film and are happy to wait. The film is tailor made for those two so of course we would want to wait. You can't get much better than them." We'll be sure to keep you updated; in the meantime, keep an eye out for Incendiary -- the gal is a powerhouse in that film.

News Bites: Valentines, Global Warming, and More Hulk Pics

TGIF! Happy Columbus Day, Happy Native American Day, Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, or whatever else you might be celebrating! Without further ado, here's a few more bits of news for the weekend:
  • After Half Nelson, ThinkFilm is looking for some heart with a romantic drama called Blue Valentine, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Written by Derek Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne, and Joey Curtis, the film will follow "a couple whose relationship is jeopardized when they find themselves in different places in their lives." Isn't that one of the vaguest premises you heard in a while? That's like saying: Hey, I'm writing a romantic drama! Someone replies: Yeah? What's it about? And you say: A couple who has problems. Anyhow, I'm sure it'll sound much better once we hear more. Production will begin in February.
  • Variety reports that Neve Campbell is picking up some more television work. The actress will star with Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Rupert Penry-Jones (Casanova) in a 4-hour global warming thriller called Burn Up -- which will be directed by Omar Madha and comes from The Full Monty scribe, Simon Beaufoy. I'm not sure where the thrills come in, but Penry-Jones is playing "the head of a fictional oil company whose life comes apart as he's pulled into a global game of intrigue; Cambell is one of the company's staff who is also working with environmentalists, and Whitford will be an oil industry lobbyist. The production is still settling on a network.
  • Last, but surely not least, we've got new The Incredible Hulk pictures over at SuperHeroHype. You might remember when he hit Toronto, which was turned into a faux Harlem. From there, the green giant hit Hamilton, a city about an hour away from Toronto, and has been wreaking havoc there. But remember -- this is a CG thang, so you won't see much more than lots of people and smashed cars.
