Does Leonardo DiCaprio's Reach Know Any Bounds?
Filed under: Casting », Deals », Celebrities and Controversy »
Would anyone have imagined that the boy from Growing Pains, who popped up in Critters 3 and Poison Ivy, would not only become one of Hollywood's big stars, but also a production powerhouse? It seems like Leonardo DiCaprio is picking up a new project every day, to the point where one wonders if he's figured out a way to live without sleep, or has a clone doing half of his work. While he has merely 33 projects to his name thus far (including short television stints), DiCaprio has his toes dipping into 25 other projects. It was 24 when he grabbed Little Red Riding Hood, and now 25 as The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog reports that after the speculation a year ago, DiCaprio is producing Ridley Scott's adaptation of Brave New World and he is planning to star in it. That's 25 projects where he's either producing, starring, or both. And if you take out the 4 television stints he had, he's 4 projects away from being involved in as many projects (at once) as he's acted in over his entire 18-year career.
Ridley Scott Confirms 'Brave New World'

We might have all seen this coming, but then again, it is always nice to know you're right. The sci-fi blog, Io9 has now confirmed that Ridley Scott's next project will be a feature film version of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley's classic novel. In an interview with the blog, Scott told them about the origins of the project. Scott says, "I didn't choose to do it, someone came to me with it. In fact it was Leo's [Leonardo DiCaprio's] production company that came to me with that." Could this mean that Scott already has Mr. DiCaprio in mind for a role in the film as well? Rumblings about the project started back in June, when Scott announced that he was finally making a return to sci-fi -- but he wasn't giving away details at the time. As it turns out, the smart money was on a big screen version of Huxley's prophetic novel.
Written in 1932, Brave New World centered on a future in which everyone appeared happy and content while in a constant state of consumption (sound familiar?). When an outsider is brought into the 'perfect society', things get a little tricky. The message: we're all willing to give up our freedoms and humanity for a little comfort and entertainment.
After the jump, Scott talks about the script, and the problem with finding 'the perfect writer'.
Is "Mystery Ridley Scott Sci-Fi Movie" Actually 'Brave New World'?

Jessica posted about Ridley Scott's recent cryptic announcement that he is returning to science-fiction with an adaptation of a book that he's been trying to adapt for 20 years. Scott refused to reveal the name of the book, but the sci-fi blog io9 has connected the dots to credibly speculate that he's talking about Aldous Huxley's dystopian masterpiece Brave New World. Indeed, it's a bit rich for Scott to be coy about this now, since news of his plans was going around back in March. At that point, Leonardo DiCaprio was being mentioned as a possible star. Brave New World is a great novel, and it's a shame that it mostly plays second-fiddle to Orwell's 1984 in the false-utopia pantheon. It's actually very different from Orwell's towering vision, cautioning not against authoritarianism and government oppression run amok, but against a culture that consumes itself in the pursuit of eternal, mindless, carefree happiness. It's not as literally dark as Scott's futuristic Blade Runner -- done right, Brave New World shouldn't really be an effects extravaganza -- but it's at least as bleak. If this is indeed what Scott has in mind, it's exciting news, and overdue: I haven't seen the 1998 Peter Gallagher TV-movie attempt at an adaptation but, uh, neither has anyone else.
