Renee Zellweger Gets a Taste of Horror with 'Case 39' Trailer

Did you know that back in 2006, Renee Zellweger took on a horror film? The project was Case 39, a creepy, kid-centric thriller that started off with bad luck in production when a fire scene torched the entire set and most of the crew's equipment, and continued when the film just couldn't get a distribution break. It was supposed to be out last summer, but just like Mandy Lane, it was a no-go. Now it is said to hit theaters sometime this year, and a trailer has finally been released.Zellweger plays a social worker who thinks she's saving a kid (Tideland's Jodelle Ferland) from her evil parents trying to send her to hell (one of whom happens to be the excellent Callum Keith Rennie). So this woman takes the kid into her home, but then realizes that this little 10-year-old isn't exactly innocent.
One would imagine that a horror film would have to be pretty decent to get Renee Zellweger on board, and that it can't be all that bad with the talents of Ferland and Rennie. However, Shock Till You Drop says that this puppy has "been through the test screening wringer," so there might be a really good reason we haven't seen it yet, and not just Mandy Lane bad luck. It looks like your basic thriller set-up in the trailer, but looks can be deceiving ... and if they are, could someone give Ferland a break and put her in something that gets a little more love?

The X-Files: I Want to Believe offers the viewer many mysteries to contemplate -- and only one of them is on-screen; as David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return to roles and a franchise that last graced our TV screens in 2002 (and was last on the big screen in 1998), your mind swirls around the behind-the-scenes facts as fiercely as it does around the events playing out before your eyes. As reclusive, retired ex-FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (Duchovny and Anderson) help the FBI with an abduction case, you're not following the plot as such; instead, you're thinking things like Hey, didn't this show get canceled six years ago? Haven't Duchovny and Chris Carter, the star and director of this film, both sued the studio behind it? Who, out in the movie going audience, is really clamoring for this movie? If you're an X-Files fan, is this film's freestanding creepy tale, with no link to the weird and convoluted mythos Carter came up with for the show, going to satisfy whatever itch you may still have for the franchise? And if you're not an X-Files fan, is the idea that this film stands alone enough reason to come to the franchise now?
Callum Keith Rennie Returns to the 'X-Files'

He might have been born in the UK, but Callum Keith Rennie grew up in Alberta and has become that guy you see everywhere. It helps that in the 14 years of his career, he's been involved in 92 projects -- some of them being very brief guest stints, or recurring roles, starring roles, and major motion pictures. He's the "I know that guy!" actor who is just everywhere. Perhaps you remember him from eXistenZ, Memento, Falling Angels, or Blade Trinity. But if you're a big space geek, you definitely know him as the dastardly Leoben Conoy on Battlestar Gallactica. And if you have a thing for aliens on Earth, then you might remember him from a certain spooky show.Variety reports that he has signed on to co-star with a certain David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the upcoming X-Files 2. Now, he's no stranger to the show -- he originally appeared as The Groundskeeper in the highest-rated episode of the first two seasons -- "Fresh Bones." But the thing is, he almost had himself a regular gig. He was first offered the role of Alex Krycek. He turned it down, and suggested Nicolas Lea take the job. So now he's "co-starring," but there's no word on who he'll be. Will he take the role he once refused? (In a ghostly form, again.) Something all-new perhaps?
Joining him on the co-starring roster is British actor Adam Godley, who has popped up in films like Love Actually, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and most recently in Elizabeth: The Golden Age as William Walsingham. Again, there's no word on who these actors will be, but hopefully we'll find out soon.
Carrie-Anne Moss Joins Car Crash Drama

Carrie-Anne Moss has never made even the slightest impact on me in a film. She's a competent enough actress, but I can't point to a single performance she's given that I remember a thing about. She's an attractive enough woman, but I don't think I'd give her a second look on the street. She keeps getting good parts, though, and it sounds like she's just snagged another. She'll be joining Kevin Zegers, Callum Keith Rennie and Cameron Bright for Normal, a drama about the aftermath of a deadly car accident. I know what you're saying, "Who, who, and who?" Zegers played Felicity Huffman's son in Transamerica, Cameron Bright is the spooky kid who did great work in Birth, and Rennie plays Leoben Conoy on Battlestar Galactica.
In Normal, Moss will play "a mother filled with rage and unable to recover from the death of her teenage son in a car crash." Bright plays her twelve year-old son. Rennie plays "a literature professor trying to overcome his guilt from the accidental killing." Zegers plays "a young thief involved in a taboo love affair with his stepmother whose life becomes intertwined with the other characters." Normal is written by Travis McDonald and Carl Bessai, and directed by Bessai.
