'Nailed" Shut Down Again Due To Financial Woes
Filed under: Comedy », Independent », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy »
Nailed is one film that is not going to catch a break. It was already shut down once by SAG because the movie's funding had not set enough money aside for the actors. That was cleared up, only to have it shut down a second time when IATSE members (solid, behind-the-scenes people like stagehands and technicians) revealed they weren't being paid. Now, Nikke Finke is reporting the film has been shut down a third time, again by the IATSE who have ordered their members off because they still aren't being paid.
Of course, the longer the film is shut down, the more money it loses. A vicious cycle, really. But if it makes Russell feel better, there are several indie films suffering. Capitol Films is apparently going through a financial upheaval and several films have met the same fate as Nailed.
Who knows which indie flicks could bite the dust in the following weeks?
At this point, all the actors are bravely hanging in, although production will probably be delayed about two weeks. Even though I haven't been 100% behind the concept, even if it is Russell, I hate to see little films die off. Plus, this is being filmed right next door to where a good friend of mine resides, and he promised to keep me (and you guys) updated. So here's wishing the best.

Capitol Films Might Want to ThinkMoney, not ThinkFilm
Filed under: Deals », Executive shifts », ThinkFilm », Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »
If you had a slow Mother's Day weekend and were lurking around the net, you might have heard that David O. Russell's upcoming comedy Nailed hit another snag; this one much bigger than just an actor walking off set (a snag that was NOT because of Russell!). They were shut down by the Screen Actors Guild because they didn't have enough money to pay their actors. You can check out the story, as it unfolded, at Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily. Luckily, any of you who are itching to see Nailed needn't worry. Variety reports that ThinkFilm (part of Capitol Films) has resumed shooting (and will hopefully have enough cash to finish it).
But this is part of a bigger problem: Nailed wasn't the only film hit with funding issues. A number of Capitol projects have been stopped or delayed due to lack of funds. ThinkFilm failed to pay Alex Gibney his owed fees for Taxi to the Dark Side. Flicks like Bad Meat were shut down. Then She Found Me's paper ad campaign hit a snag when there was no money for ads. You know you have serious money issues when you can't even get enough for your ad campaigns.
And now they're heading to Cannes with films from The Edge of Love to The Oxford Murders. There's a lot of interesting films attached to this company, but my head has got "Another One Bites the Dust" playing for ThinkFilm and Capitol.

Jennifer Lopez Vehicle 'Impossible Pursuits' Moving Forward
Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Deals », Cannes », Distribution », Newsstand »
I know a lot of people come down on Jennifer Lopez for whatever reason (I heard she's not the friendliest person in the world), but as far as acting goes, I do think she has potential. Word has it that she's great in El Cantante, and I truly liked her performances in both Out of Sight and Bordertown (read my Berlin review of that film here). Of course, for every Selena, there's a Jersey Girl ... and a Monster-in-Law ... and a Gigli. What's next for the gal, you ask? Well, the Hollywood Reporter tells us that folks are moving forward with Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, with Lopez attached to star and Don Roos directing off his own script. I dig Roos. Did you see Happy Endings? The Opposite of Sex? He makes these ultra quirky relationship films that have just enough edge -- coupled with fantastic performances -- for us to not call out corny.
Capitol Films has boarded the film as a co-financier (just one of the many deals currently taking place over at the Cannes Film Festival), and they'll also be in charge of the pic's worldwide sales. With Marc Platt producing, story is said to revolve around the "tempestuous relationship" between a woman and her young stepson. Like with most of Roos' films, Love and Other Impossible Pursuits will mix a little comedy with a little drama, so that you'll be laughing at one point -- but then, when you least expect it, a tear slides down your cheek. Based on the title, I'm sure a lot of folks will crack the obvious Lopez joke; how the "Other Impossible Pursuits" include the actress trying to absolutely shine in a role. But I refuse to go there. Nope. Not me. I like her. I don't exactly know why I like her, but the talent is in there, somewhere. And here's hoping we see it come through soon.
