New Line was nice enough to provide Cinematical with the exclusive one-sheet for Love in the Time of Cholera (click on the poster for a larger version), based on Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez's novel of the same name. Adapted for the screen by Oscar winner Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) and directed by Mike Newell (Donnie Brasco, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Love in the Time of Cholera tells the tale of two lovers, Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) and Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), one more obsessed than the other, who part ways at an early age to live two very different lives. The film then tracks each over the years (we're talking late 19th century through the first decades of the 20th century), while Fermina settles down with a doctor (Benjamin Bratt) her father forces her to wed and Florentino engages in 622 affairs (not kidding about that) in an attempt to mask the pain he feels due to the one that got away. Also starring in this sure-to-be-an-Oscar-contender are Liev Schreiber, John Leguizamo, the very lovely (and talented) Catalina Sandino Moreno and Hector Elizondo. Love in the Time of Cholera (which also happens to be one of my favorite titles of all time for a number of reasons -- love is but a disease, after all) arrives in theaters on November 16.

The Hottest State is one of the most inauthentic films I've seen in a long time. Written and directed by Ethan Hawke, and from his own novel no less, the film plays out like some version of hell where everyone is being forced to perform in an acting class skit that will never end. The story follows William (Mark Webber), a 20-year-old aspiring actor who is hanging around the Manhattan bar scene when he runs into Sarah, the girl of his dreams. The casting of Sarah is the movie's fatal flaw. As written, she's an aspiring singer who is gaga over William, but Catalina Sandino Moreno is an actress who, it's clear from the get-go, can't sing a note and worse, seems ready to climb the walls to get away from her co-star throughout the picture. I've seen more sexual chemistry from two doorknobs. Watching this mess, you have to believe that Ethan Hawke, as talented as he is, must have realized he was making a colossal turkey but was too far into the thing to back out.

And that's only the start of it. The Hottest State is structurally odd -- something that's sometimes a necessity in the case of book adaptations, but especially true in this case, since what begins as a romance ultimately takes on the trappings of a thriller in the third act. I won't go into specifics in case you plan to see it for yourself, but let's just say that if the entire movie were on the same wavelength as the third act, I think we'd actually have an interesting, tough little film here. I also think Hawke must have known this too on some level, because it's only in the third act that his personality as a director begins to shine through -- interesting and creative camera choices, powerful acting moments and an earned level of tension that are present only during this part of the movie. The first two-thirds of the film are a cloying, obnoxious romantic fable about two young people bouncing around in Manhattan and down in Mexico, lounging around and pretending, for our benefit, that they actually love each other.

Bit by slow, lingering, snail-like bit, we've gotten news on Steven Soderbergh's upcoming $70 million (approximately) Ernesto Che Guevara films -- The Argentine and Guerrilla. It all started back in November of 2005, with one film and Benicio Del Toro. Then, the team had to scramble to shoot footage before some refurbishing at the UN, some pics were released, Julia Ormond joined the cast and the film got split in two. After a long wait, production is finally scheduled to begin next week in Spain, and we've got another name to add to the cast -- Columbian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno.

Of course, the actress is best known for her starring, Oscar-nominated role in Maria Full of Grace, but she's also spent time in Richard Linklater's world of Fast Food Nation, and the Ethan Hawke-helmed The Hottest State, which is getting released next month. Unfortunately, there is no word about who she is going to play. Whoever it is, she's a great addition to an already intriguing cast. Really, you could throw almost any name at me, and I'd still pay to see Del Toro as Che and Franke Potente as Tamara Bunke -- the only woman to fight alongside communist rebels under Guevara. Shooting is scheduled to continue for nine weeks in Madrid and Andalusia, and hopefully once the cameras begin to officially roll, we'll have some more information on just what Soderbergh has up his sleeve for the epic man of t-shirts.
