A New Trailer and Date For 'Green Lantern: First Flight'

Filed under: Action », Animation », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Warner Brothers », Newsstand », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

This has been out a few days, but it's never too late to enjoy a cool piece of animation, especially if it stars a square-jawed man like Hal Jordan. While his live action incarnation seems to be treading water (and it's never too late to give your two cents on that topic), you can look forward to Green Lantern: First Flight, which hits DVD shelves on July 28. So while fools like me are trying to survive a frantic ComicCon on no food or sleep, you can be watching this in the air conditioned comfort of your own home.

You know it'll be good, because it was directed by Lauren Montgomery, who was part of the team behind Marvel's brilliant Hulk Vs DVD, and the director of DC's recent animated Wonder Woman. It has a nice vocal cast too: Christopher Meloni is the man behind Hal Jordan, and he's joined by the talents of Tricia Helfer as Boodikka, Michael Madsen as Kilowog, and Victor Garber as Sinestro. The story traces Jordan receiving the ring and being mentored by Sinestro, who he discovers isn't exactly the kindly teacher he pretends to be. (With a name like Sinestro? No!) Jordan must perfect his powers, and combat the treason within the ranks of the Lanterns.

While the animated version looks like a lot of fun, you can't help but think what a good summer blockbuster this might have made. Check out the trailer below.

Sundance Interview: John Krasinski, Writer/Director/Actor, 'Brief Interviews With Hideous Men'

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Sundance », Festival Reports », Podcasts », Interviews »

Writer, director and actor John Krasinski isn't knocking himself out trying to be cool about the debut of his film Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (which Scott Weinberg reviewed here) in the Dramatic Competition at Sundance: " Being at Sundance, I think, is the greatest honor I could ever have for this movie, truly. Sundance has always been -- before I got the show (The Office), before I came to Sundance -- it's always been to me, that place where film making is done for film lovers. There's a feeling here that people appreciate taking chances and doing bold things, and I think my cast and crew took big chances. ..." Krasinski spoke with Cinematical in Park City about adapting a seemingly unadaptable book, his respect for the late David Foster Wallace, casting Julianne Nicholson (Flannel Pyjamas) as the woman facing an army of Hideous Men, and much more.

A Few More TV Actors Join the 'Stepfather' Remake

Filed under: Horror », Sony », Remakes and Sequels »

A few months back, Chris let you know that the remake of The Stepfather was most definitely moving forward with Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck) in the title role, Nelson McCormick (Prom Night) in the director's chair, and J.S. Cardone (The Covenant) on adaptation duty. (Also previously announced was the involvement of actors Sela Ward, Penn Badgley and Adrienne Palicki.) And to those who might not remember the 1987 Joseph Ruben thriller, here's a recap: There's this crazy guy who likes to kill families, and ... oh, you should probably just rent it. It stars another currently-popular TV actor in a very entertaining performance.

So now comes word from Bloody-Disgusting.com that two more familiar faces have joined the fray. For your nine bucks you'll not only get Walsh and Ward, but also the ever-cool Christopher Meloni and the always-adorable Sherry Stringfield. (The actors are best known for a pair of TV series with two-letter titles. Can you name them?) Production on the Stepfather remake begins in late March ... which means the flick should arrive just in time to snag that early January horror spot that somehow seems to gush money every damn year.

Plus it's a Sony remake. And that means PG-13 all the way.

Meloni and Franco Want in on 'Nights in Rodanthe'

Filed under: Drama », Romance », Casting »

Rejoice! There's finally more news about the super-saucy adaptation of Nicholas Sparks romance Nights in Rodanthe. In February, Erik Davis posted about the film, which will re-team Diane Lane with India-incensing Richard Gere (you might remember that the pair starred together in Unfaithful). Unlike their last film, this offering is about a doctor (Gere) who is heading to see his estranged son when he has a sexy interlude with a woman in an unhappy marriage. Not simply sex like that old Heart song goes, the experience is "life-changing" for the man. Now, if you're wondering who the other two players in the dysfunction are, you don't have to wait any longer.

Christopher Meloni, that guy from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and the puss-y Freakshow from Harold & Kumar, will play Lane's husband; James Franco, everyone's favorite little Goblin will play Gere's son. There's just something about Franco and Gere as father and son that seems completely right to me, so I've got to give kudos on the casting choice. How the players will come together in this dysfunctional environment remains to be seen. The adaptation comes from Ken Hixon, who last penned City by the Sea, and Ann Peacock, whose last film was The Chronicles of Narnia. Interesting pair, isn't it? Lackawanna Blues director George Wolfe will helm the feature and Denise Di Novi is the romance's producer. Considering the increasing popularity of Nicolas Sparks' work on the big screen, especially the most recent adaptation -- The Notebook -- I imagine that romance fans will go to see this in droves.
