'Cloverfield's' Mysterious Title Revealed as ... 'Cloverfield?'
Filed under: RumorMonger », Fandom », Movie Marketing »
Almost every day I receive an email from another online movie writer pointing me toward a "hot" story they've written on a "hot" topic. Some of these I decide are worthy of a post, some are not. This evening Devin from CHUD was the latest name to pop into my inbox, and he's got some tasty Halloween treats that I personally think you might want to check out. First off, the first full-length Cloverfield (or 1-18-08, or Untitled J.J. Abrams Mind-F*ck) is said to be arriving on November 16, with a confirmed title, but Devin claims to have seen the trailer (or an earlier version of it) and he's published a full report with all kinds of details. Most notably, he says the trailer ends with the title Cloverfield. Granted, knowing Abrams and his crew, they may not stick a title in until the very last minute. Additionally, even if this is the real title, I wouldn't put it past Abrams to change it once all these reports start cropping up online.
Moving on ... based on the description, the trailer seems pretty cool. Lots of what we've seen before; people running, screaming, military folks, rockets, helicopters, the Statue of Liberty's head on the ground somewhere -- but, finally, it seems we get a tiny glimpse of this monster (or shall I say, group of monsters) that are attacking New York City. According to Devin "...there's footage of army guys running and shadows on a wall. Shadows of a screaming woman being attacked by a small monster (possibly two - either she's being pulled away from the monster by someone behind her or there's another monster behind her). It's confirmed: the movie has a big beast and small ones. Like the American Godzilla." He also adds that we briefly see another, larger monster pass between two buildings, but he couldn't make out the details. So it looks like Abrams and Co. will keep their monsters well hidden until closer to release.
Oh, and if it ends up the flick is called Cloverfield, well, that'd be totally lame. I vote for Super Kick-Ass Monster Movie! But that's me.
Tom Welling in 'Justice League' Movie?

Apparently neither Christian Bale nor Brandon Routh are doing Warner Bros.' Justice League movie. Does that leave the studio desperate to find replacements? Not according to IESB, which always seems to have the best scoops before everyone else (to paraphrase The Joker: Where do they get these wonderful sources?). The movie site, which also broke the news that Stephen Sommers would direct G.I. Joe, claims Tom Welling is filling the cape of Superman in Justice League. This should be good news to a lot of Smallville fans -- as my comic-obsessed buddy says: "That's who they should have gotten in the first place [for Superman Returns]" -- but it hasn't been confirmed yet, so no celebrating just yet. Still, IESB seems more sure of this rumor than any the site has ever announced. They admit over there that they haven't gotten a reply from Welling's people and that the WB people have denied it, but they're still positive that it is true, because of the sources they've heard it from.Supermanhomepage.com got an official response from Smallville producer Al Gough, who said this casting "hasn't happened, won't happen, he is under contract to Smallville through Season 8." But IESB has recognized this debunking and still isn't backing down. The site insists Welling has the role and even points out that Smallville may even revolve production around the movie's shoot. As for Bale's replacement, IESB claims to also know who's playing Batman but doesn't have a good enough amount of sources to reveal it. Meanwhile, CHUD has a sarcastic response to the whole thing. The site has a joke post up claiming that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (poor guy) have been cast in the movie, the former as Batman and the latter as Superman. The post also brings back the old floater that Jack Black would be Green Lantern. Of course, CHUD is obviously making fun of IESB and wonder if they could get a lot of hits by just making up casting rumors, such as Jamie Bamber as Superman and Gerard Butler as Aquaman. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if IESB's latest, including the tip that Justice League will only be partially motion capture (like every other fantasy movie these days), is true.
Film Geek Heaven: Ask Alfonso

The good folks over at CHUD have a nifty little promo going with Universal to coincide with the upcoming DVD release of Children of Men. CHUD readers can submit questions to director Alfonso Cuaron about the film, and he will personally answer three to five of them. I interviewed Cuaron back in December, and, trust me, he is a very passsionate interview subject, speaking eloquently about his film, the filmmaking process, and whatever else conversation may turn to. So turn on those brain cells, head over to CHUD, and toss director Alfonso Cuaron a question he hasn't answered 5,000 times already. Do not submit your questions for Alfonso here -- go to CHUD and enter them there.Devin and Nick at CHUD both had the film in their top tens, as did James Rocchi, Scott Weinberg and I -- a pretty diverse group of cinematic tastes to be drawn to one film. There's also a nice little discussion on the film in the forums -- a little outdated, but interesting to read. Check it out while you're over there, and toss your own two cents into the mix.
Who do you want to talk to? To which other directors would you most like to be able to submit questions?
