Fan Made: The Improbable Movie Trading Cards
Filed under: Fandom », Images », Fan Made »

I wasn't much of a collector when I was a kid. I could never keep a toy in it's package perched high on a shelf. In fact, usually the packaging would last about as long as it could take me to wrench my new She-Ra, Jem, or Barbie from their cardboard cage. But the one thing I did collect were trading cards, E.T. trading cards to be exact. But that was a long time ago, and those cards have long been misplaced (and I won't even dwell on the fact I had the complete set), so you can imagine the overload of nostalgia I experienced when I saw The Improbably Movie Cards over at Automatic Lifestyle Dispenser. Because, what these fine folks have done is made movie collector cards in that classic 80's style, but the catch is that these cards are for films that no person in their right mind would want to collect, and the results are pretty funny -- if not a little bizarre.
So how bad it could it be? Well, if you thought a Silkwood card might be in 'dubious' taste, wait till you get a look at the Schindler's List "Nazi's on The Move" card. Dispenser also made collector cards for good old Alvy and Annie, Sara Goldfarb, and even Charlie Meadows. But no trading card pack would be complete without the stickers, and luckily they have thought of that too, and we get collectible stickers of Colonel "The Horror" Kurtz, and Anton "Friendo" Chigurh. Unfortunately, these cards only exist online, but I don't think I would be the only one out there who would kill for their very own set of Annie Hall trading cards.
Get a Taste of Twilight's 'Forbidden Fruits'

Sure, the Twihards among us have probably already purchased their very own womb, snagged some of those limited edition chocolate bars from Godiva and possibly even shelled out thirty bucks for a photo with the most famous hand model in the world. But the collectibles don't stop there, because there are still plenty of goofy tie-in product ideas rattling around the brains of marketing execs to keep fans busy until Edward and Bella are back on the big-screen staring longingly (or blankly depending on your point of view) at each other. The latest tie-in comes from the makers of Sweethearts (aka Conversation Hearts) and go by the ridiculously awesome name of 'Forbidden Fruits'. But these are not your mom's Sweethearts; these babies are covered in glitter and have Twilight themed quotes like 'Bite Me', 'Lamb', and 'I Trust You' written on them.
Shooting might have already begun out in Vancouver for the follow-up to the vampire romance, but other than a few casting announcements, fans haven't had much to keep them busy until New Moon's release later this fall. Well, maybe with the exception of the engaging in the odd criminal misdemeanor or hate mail campaign. Come to think of it; compared to some of the other behaviors from legions of fans, collecting candy seems downright wholesome. But if sugar isn't your thing and you still have a penchant for sparkly vamps; don't worry, there is still plenty of merchandise on its way for the devoted collector, including a board game, umbrellas, band-aids, and my personal favorite; Edward Cullen body glitter. Check out images of some Twilight merch in the gallery below.
New Moon will arrive in theaters on November 20th.
The Geek Beat: Limited Edition

Every year, this buying frenzy fascinates me, and I find myself gaping at the shelves of action figures, statues, and busts. I covet very little in the way of memorabilia, and I'm always wondering about the people who do. How do they afford it? Where do they put it all? Even on the rare occasion that I do long to own something like Sideshow Collectibles' impeccably dressed Lara Croft, the practical half of me can't comprehend spending that kind of money. Even if I had thousands to drop on such things, I don't think I ever would, for the simple reason that I'd have to dust them. Blech.
Top 10 Highest-Valued Star Wars Toys

Happy birthday Star Wars toys! 30 years ago, you came into our lives, and 30 years later, we're all kicking ourselves for not hoarding you away, keeping you in pristine condition and eventually getting rich by selling you to the highest bidder. Fortunately, there are more of you being made today and the London Times has declared which of you recently released, still-cheap items are likely to go up in value. The spotlight is part of a list featured in today's Money Central section of the Times. Titled "The top 10 Star Wars collectibles," the list includes 30-year-old, super-rare action figures like Kenner's Darth Vader with double-telescoping light saber (currently valued at £5,000-plus, or almost $10,000 US) and this year's Lego version of the X-WIng Fighter (currently sold for £150, or $293 US). Coming in at #10 are the two-year old, "too cute" Galactic Heroes line of figures from Hasbro, which are currently only "the price of a rip-off sandwich" (£3, or $5.86 US).
Speaking of "too cute", I'm personally going for the plush SD Darth Vader (pictured) that the Times lists at #9. But I actually haven't learned anything from the past 30 years and so I'm going to actually play with it. Or use it as a stress reliever whenever I see articles telling us to invest in action figures. See, I believe toys are for playing with, comic books are for reading and collectibles made solely to be collectibles are a waste of space.
For images of all the toys listed in the Times article, check out the gallery below. I also included the unmentioned Galactic Heroes Darth Vader Unmasked toy, because it fits with the criticism that these toys are "too cute." What person who'd seen Jedi as a kid would have ever expected a cute version of the unmasked Vader/Anakin?
