Do You Want to See Kenickie Battle his Alcohol Demons?

Filed under: Casting », Celebrities and Controversy », Home Entertainment »

My, how actors can fall. It might have been painful to watch Jeff Conaway -- aka Kenickie in Grease -- sing a little bit of Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now in Jawbreaker, but now we'll get to see him try to get clean on reality television. While he doesn't get the gossip numbers of someone like La Lohan, he's had his own share of turmoil. After he got kicked from his last reality show to enter rehab back in 2005, things must have gotten rough once again, because he's going to be one of the stars of VH1's latest reality trip -- Celebrity Rehab.

This latest foray into celeb mockery stars Dr. Drew as the man who will set the stars straight -- including actors Conaway, Brigitte Nielsen, and Daniel Baldwin, according to A Socialite's Life, plus Tom Sizemore and Andy Dick, according to IMDb. I don't know what's their "reality," and whether any are recreations, but in that link above you can see some snorting and toilet kissing screencaps from ET. Lovely, eh? Is there any barrier that won't be crossed by reality television? My guess is that we'll soon get movies-behind-the-scenes, where films get made with people who are feuding, who have short tempers, drug addictions, or have a tendency to hop into bed with their co-stars. After that, maybe Celebrity Dick -- a skilled private eye digs up dirt on your favorite celebrities?

But it does put things into perspective. There's actors who get mocked for personal tidbits that get leaked to the press, and then there's those who choose to deal with them for the enjoyment of the public. Poor Kenickie. Maybe he can get a job with Michelle Pfieffer in Grease 3?

Jeanne Tripplehorn will Play Jackie O in 'Grey Gardens'

Filed under: Documentary », Drama », Music & Musicals », Casting », HBO Films »

So while I might not be the biggest Jackie O or Jeanne Tripplehorn aficionado, I will say this: they do look an awful lot alike. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Tripplehorn has signed to play the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the HBO Films 'remake' of Grey Gardens. Tripplehorn will be joining Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange in the 'true' story of two of the most eccentric women you could ever meet.

Back in 1975, Albert and David Maysles, Susan Froemke, Ellen Hovde, and Muffie Meyer made a documentary about the lives of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale. They were the aunt and cousin to Onassis and lived a bizarre life in almost total isolation in a ramshackle mansion by the name of Grey Gardens. After trying for years to have the home brought up to code, the two were finally separated when "Big Edie" died in 1977 (Little Edie finally sold the house in 1979 to a former editor for the Washington Post). The documentary inspired an award winning stage musical in 2006 starring Christine Ebersol as Little Edie. The new film from HBO will not be a musical (thankfully, I might add) and instead was based on the original documentary.

The cast also includes Daniel Baldwin as Julius Krug, the former secretary of the interior and true love of Little Edie (Barrymore). Tripplehorn is doing some post-production work for Winged Creatures, an ensemble drama about a group of people who survive a shooting in an L.A. diner (I guess it will be kind of like Crash, but with more gunfire). Grey Gardens is being directed by Michael Sucsy (who also co-wrote the script with Patricia Rozema) and is currently shooting on location in Toronto, Canada. Grey Gardens will hit theaters in 2008.

Update: Daniel Baldwin Found!

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy »

Bald-win some and Bald-lose some, it seems: Actor Daniel Baldwin, currently wanted under a Orange County, CA warrant for recieving stolen goods, has, in fact been located. California authorities and straight-to-video action fans everywhere will be pleased to know that Baldwin is currently in Detroit, filming Little Red Devil, opposite Dee Wallace Stone and James Russo. Baldwin and the owner of the vehicle Baldwin is wanted in connection with both assert it was a borrowing-gone-wrong that turned into an interstate legal concern thanks to delayed paperwork and other mis-communications.

Hope so, as Baldwin's November 2005 arrest has turned into two felony counts -- unlawfully taking a car and recieving stolen property -- which can put you in jail for up to three years. In a statement, Baldwin's manager Daniel Spilo told ABC.com that ""Daniel looks forward to going down to the courthouse when he returns to town with his attorney and the owner of the vehicle and clearing up the confusion and getting the bench warrant recalled." In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, Baldwin stated that the charge as outlined in the warrant " ... is erroneous and a mistake ... it isn't true ... I'm sober today and I'm working real hard on my career and becoming a productive member of society." Future generations will, of course, determine if Little Red Devil in fact counts as "productive."

Have You Seen This Man?

An arrest warrant has been issued for Daniel Baldwin, after the troubled actor failed to turn up in court Tuesday morning to face charges on grand theft auto. Baldwin, brother to Alec Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin and star of such B-films as Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell and Boardwalk Poets, was scheduled to appear in Orange County Superior Court to respond to charges that he stole a vehicle in November, 2006. Police contend that Baldwin stole a 2003 GMC Yukon and drove it from Orange County to Santa Monica. A subsequent search of Baldwin's hotel room turned up drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Baldwin was previously arrested for drug possession last April, after police responded to a call from a woman who said she had been threatened by Baldwin at a Santa Monica motel. Another arrest followed in July, after Baldwin ran a red light and crashed a rented Ford T-Bird into two cars on a Los Angeles street. Baldwin is known to have spent time in drug recovery centers, but the success of that endeavor now appears in doubt. Cinematical is currently conducting an active search for Baldwin -- if any of our readers spot him, please drop us an e-mal.

Cinematical's SmartGossip: Burned out on Britney

Filed under: RumorMonger », Newsstand », Tom Cruise », George Clooney », Cinematical's SmartGossip! »

Do I even need to link to one of the hundreds of articles about Britney Spears filing for divorce? The news threatened to overshadow the U.S. election results this week. Hell, it overshadowed the speculation about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding venue, and we all know how important that is. I can only read so many news items about the validity of the original Spears-Federline ceremony and how Britney giving away baby photos affects their pre-nup and where Kevin Federline is buying his boxers now. I am burned out. I may have to read George Will columns to recuperate. And I don't want to hear any more about Anna Nicole Smith either, although I do think it's funny that the Bahamian government now considers her a political liability.
  • Ah, here we go -- civilized celebrity news. Cate Blanchett (pictured above) has become co-artistic director with her husband of the Sydney Theater Company. She wants to focus on this work primarily, decreasing her acting work. It sounds admirable but I'll be sorry to see her in fewer films.
  • George Clooney wants you to know that he was misquoted as saying Sen. Barack Obama told him that he (Obama) was planning to run for President. I can pretend I included this little news item in the list to incorporate politics and raise the tone of this week's column, but you all know I just wanted to write about Clooney. There's a photo in that TMZ article, too.

BREAKING: Haley Joel Osment in Serious Car Crash

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »

Man, you know you're getting old when little Haley Joel Osment is driving -- did you know he was 18-years-old already? The actor, who is set to play a high school journalist covering a basketball team in the upcoming Home of the Giants, was driving his 1995 Saturn (Wait, why is Osment driving a 1995 Saturn?) in a suburb of Los Angeles at about 1am when he lost control of the car, hit a brick pillar and flipped over. LA Country Sheriff's Lt. Greg Sisneros said Osment was awake and talking following the crash, though he had no further information on the star's current status. Here's hoping the kid is okay.

In somewhat related news, actor Daniel Baldwin (brother of Alec) was in a high speed crash of his own after plowing into two parked cars in a rented silver Thunderbird going approximately 80 miles per hour. Baldwin, who has been battling a substance abuse problem for awhile now, is being held in police custody at the UCLA Medical Center. Sources say he could face drunk-driving charges.
