Zombie Lovers Rejoice! 'Deadworld' Coming to the Big Screen

Filed under: Action », Horror », Independent », Deals », Scripts », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

People can't get enough of zombie stories these days. The walking undead have invaded movies, television, comics, and Regency England and show no signs of abating. I'm beginning to think this is part of the plan to turn us all into zombies and if so, you'll be meeting your new lord and master in Deadworld. Variety reports that the long running comic series is making its way to the big screen thanks to David Hayter, Benedict Carver, and Bill Mechanic.

Deadworld has been around since 1987, and has always had more of a cult following as opposed to new series such as The Walking Dead. That's probably because it's a rather unique and twisted spin on the zombie mythology, as the war to wipe out humanity is told entirely from their point of view. Led by King Zombie, the Harley-riding rotter to your right, they track down and slaughter the humans that cast them out for their accursed ways. The sadistic King seeks to wipe out the last traces of mankind and open the gates of Hell so that the dead can truly walk the Earth. If you dig the torture, gore, and slaughter of your fellow humans, this is your series. (It's also got a very cool website where you zombie lovers can buy all kinds of King Zombie stuff.)

Deadworld doesn't have a director yet, but Hayter is in the process of writing the script, and will also help design the world of the film. He and Carver are producing under their Dark Heroes banner, alongside Mechanic's Pandemonium company. (It's a Fox reunion!) They're hoping to launch a Deadworld franchise, and a multiple story arc they can splash over all kinds of properties. If all goes well, King Zombie will be hunting us down next year ... and God help us all.

Geek Daily: Spider-Man 4, Deadpool, Monster Attack Network, and More!

When it comes to superhero franchises, the news just never ends, and the next one on everyone's radar is bound to be Spider-Man 4. It has its release date set (May 6, 2011) and Sam Raimi says they're only working on part four at this point, and still in the middle of hashing out a story. They are, however, close to choosing the big baddie: "All the characters or villains, whatever we decide to do will be from Stan Lee's creations or those that came after him." He's also planning to write in Mary Jane, and hopes Kirsten Dunst agrees to come back ... so I guess that's an indication she's still not signed the way Tobey Maguire is. [MTV]

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
seems to have test screened, somewhere, and spoiler filled reviews are hitting the Internet. (Scott Adkin Fanz has one, but its origin is uncertain. Read at your own risk.) I haven't read them (surprises in this job are so far and few between that I'd like to go into Wolverine fairly fresh) but Devin Faraci is wondering how the heck they can go to Japan from here ... or anywhere, really.

One of the biggest questions (other than: Will it suck?) surrounding Wolverine is what they've done with Deadpool. The LA Times' Dish Rag caught up with Ryan Reynolds and he painted a tiny picture of how the film approaches the character: "I don't even look at it like I play Deadpool. I really think I'm more or less playing Wade Wilson, obviously, and then I'm playing the creature that will eventually become Deadpool. But in this movie, it's sort of his newly formed version, so to speak." He also shrugs off rumors that he's being groomed for his own spinoff. "I've had a couple of people approach me about meetings for a 'Deadpool' movie, but I just think it's absurd to even think that way until this movie comes out."

Did 'Watchmen' Fail? And Why?

So, the box office results are in and Watchmen plummeted a sharp 67% in only its second week. While Warner Bros is brushing it off and pointing out that Sex and the City suffered a comparable drop, it's a little disheartening. 300 rocked the box office for weeks in March 2006, but Watchmen is limping in comparison. The drop is even more stinging in lieu of David Hayter's open letter to fans begging them to support the film in its second weekend. "You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week. If you care about movies that have a brain, or balls, (and this film's got both, literally), or true adaptations -- And if you're thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night. Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it'll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we'd like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again."

The counterpoint to Hayter is Devin Faraci, who already considers the film a success on an artistic and commercial level. For a property unknown to a lot of people, it had a bigger opening than the surefire characters of Superman Returns or Batman Begins, and the risk Warner Bros took will pay off in its artistic reputation. Kevin Smith admitted to Slashfilm that it had influenced his decision to make A Couple of Dicks with Warner Bros, and other directors are bound to feel the same.

Watch This: WTF is Watchmen

Filed under: Fandom », Trailers and Clips »

Watchmen is the kind of comic property that not a lot of people are aware of even though it's known as one of the greatest comics ever written. It's not exactly Batman or Superman or Iron Man; it's a lot deeper and more adult in a lot of ways -- kinda like a slick crime story with a supernatural twist. But now that Watchmen has been turned into a major motion picture with the director of 300 (Zack Snyder) at the helm, all of a sudden everyone is a HUGE Watchmen fan. It doesn't matter if they actually read the graphic novel or not -- if it's popular right now and a whole ton of people are giddy with excitement, then you bet your Dr. Manhattan condoms (seriously, here's the link) there will be posers.

Enter: LandLine's WTF is Watchmen video, which pokes fun at all those "fake fans" of Watchmen who run around pretending like they know what the hell they're talking about even though they haven't got a clue. I especially like the addition of Watchmen screenwriter David Hayter, even though it's an actor playing Hayter. Fun stuff. Stay tuned for lots more Watchmen content (including our much anticipated review) all week long.

Listen: 'Watchmen' Screenwriter Compares Fox to Satan

We've totally stumbled upon the first (or second) big trend of 2009, and it has to do with listening to uncomfortable movie-related audio files. While no one secretly recorded Watchmen screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men, X-Men 2) as he shouted foul-mouthed obscenities toward 20th Century Fox executives, the dude had no problem opening up during the Watchmen press day in Los Angeles yesterday when asked about his thoughts on the whole Warner Bros./20th Century Fox feud. A couple of quotes:

"I had worked for 20th Century Fox before, and I was fully under the belief that they had the potential to shut down the movie and remake it themselves out of pure spite and meanness. They're a rough group of people ... and somewhat ethically challenged."

"... My experience told me that they could shut down this movie, and lock it away in Rupert's vault ... and make it the most unseen desired cult movie of all time ... but I was extremely concerned. Many producer friends of mine said the same thing as Alex - that they're just going for money or whatever -- but I was like, 'Yeah, okay, but there's something beyond money going on at that studio and it has to do with ... Satan." [Listen to the complete audio over at Hollywood Outbreak]

So ... we should assume this Hayter won't be penning any future X-Men movies for Fox then? Whaddya think? In other Watchmen news, Collider confirmed that the Watchmen DVD will have a Director's Cut that's 3 hours and 10 minutes, and another cut with Tales of the Black Freighter mixed in which will run at 3 hours and 25 minutes. FINALLY ... check out four Watchmen clips after the jump ...

Warner Bros and Capcom Are Looking For a 'Lost Planet'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Deals », Warner Brothers », Newsstand », Games and Game Movies »

According to Variety, Warner Bros and Capcom (who is becoming very hands on with its movie adaptations) are teaming up to bring an adaptation of Lost Planet to the big screen. The script is to be penned by David Hayter, who is fresh off Watchmen.

Funnily enough, Variety is describing the story as revolving around an expedition to an ice planet that harbors an energy source which could save all of mankind. Well, I've never played this, but just looking at the cover proves that to be an understatement. What would he need that big gun for if it's just a simple expedition?

Well, obviously there's more to it than that. It actually follows a group of snow pirates who battle the local nasties, the Akrid, to obtain the precious commodity known as thermal energy. (This is why it's easier to be a pirate in the Caribbean.) One pilot, Wayne, is rescued from an untimely death, and has an unfortunate case of amnesia. He can only remember bits and pieces of his past, including the death of his father by the monstrous Akrid. But as he searches for the truth of his attack, he uncovers a conspiracy that could destroy not only the Akrid, but all the snow pirates. Now that sounds like a more promising movie. Hopefully, some of you readers have played the game, and can sound off on whether it deserves to be on the big screen or not.
