Luke Wilson Gets 'Tenure'

Filed under: Comedy », Casting »

Sometimes I really wonder about Luke Wilson. He'll do a lot of great films, and mix them with a lot of schlock, many of which don't fall under the paycheck defense. Really -- is there any reason, whatsoever, for him to co-star in Blonde Ambition? He's lucky that he's so good in the good stuff, and hopefully his next project will be just that.

Wiping off the blonde idiocy, Variety reports that Wilson has signed on to star in Blowtorch Entertainment's new college comedy -- Tenure. Mike Million makes his feature writing and directorial debut with the project, which has Wilson playing a "beleaguered college professor who competes for tenure with an impressive new female colleague." The female shoes haven't been filled yet, but David Koechner has signed on to play "Wilson's anthropology prof sidekick."

This is part of Blowtorch's initiative to put out "low-budget, youth-oriented movies," so I think it's safe to presume that this will have a lot of young humor in it. This isn't your stodgy university comedy. Production begins next month in Philly.

Kathryn Hahn Sells 'The Goods' Too

Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Newsstand »

First came Jeremy Piven, who signed onto Chappelle's Show writer Neal Brennan's The Goods: The Don Ready Story back in August. While it sounds like something Will Ferrell would head, he's just producing the film, which has Piven playing "a used-car liquidator hired to save a struggling dealership during a Fourth of July weekend sale." The pot was sweetened last month when Ving Rhames also signed on, as well as Anchorman co-star David Koechner. But what used car scenario is complete without the female guns?

The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Kathryn Hahn has been tapped to play the lone woman in Don Ready's (Piven) team of used-car liquidators. In fact, THR describes them as "mercenary car salesman," which should be interesting for the comedy, unless the use of "mercenary" was just an outbreak of writer flair. Aside from playing Lily Lebowski on Crossing Jordan for the past six years, Hahn has appeared in her share of cinematic comedy, which includes, not surprisingly, a role in Anchorman. With Ferrell producing, and Koechner and Hahn signed on, which Anchorman member will be next? There's a heck of a lot of great names to choose from -- Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Fred Willard, Chris Parnell, Fred Armisen, Seth Rogen, Danny Trejo...

Ving Rhames Has Got 'The Goods'

I don't know why I think of Ving Rhames as a tough guy dramatic actor first and a comedic actor second. Even his most iconic role, as Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction, was simply a straight-played comic part. Throughout his career he's been in a lot of comedies, from the truly awful (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) to the near-perfect (Out of Sight). But I guess lately, aside from the recent I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, he's been pigeon-holed as best-suited for crime thrillers, prison dramas and well-produced horror films, with an occasional fun action pic like the Mission:Impossible movies. Personally, I'd love him to do another movie that mixes all those genres with a touch of comedy, a la the guilty pleasure Con-Air, but I'll settle for just a comedy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rhames has signed on to Paramount Vantage's The Goods: The Don Ready Story, which Monika told us recently will star Jeremy Piven as a used car salesman. Also joining the cast is Anchorman's David Koechner.

It wasn't mentioned what kind of characters Rhames and Koechner will be playing, but hopefully they're fellow used car salesmen working alongside Piven, who, more specifically, is a guy who must save the struggling dealership over a Fourth of July weekend. The most logical idea, though, is that whatever Rhames' role, he will be some combination of humor and muscle; the combination is one of the reasons that Rhames can do comedy and still retain his reputation as a bad ass, unlike some other people (please don't ever put Rhames in a babysitting comedy!). The comedy will be produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay via their new company Gary Sanchez Productions, along with Chris Henchy (Entourage) and Kevin Messick (A Lot Like Love). The script was written by Rick Stempson and Andy Stock, who also wrote the upcoming Seann William Scott movie Gary the Tennis Coach. It will be directed by Chappelle's Show actor/writer/director Neal Brennan.

Jack White To Do Cameo As Elvis in 'Walk Hard'

Walk Hard, a mock biopic spoofing the likes of Walk The Line and Ray, has John C. Reilly playing Dewey Cox, a fictional musician with shades of Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash. Over the course of Cox's life, he crosses a lot of real-life music legends, and now we know who will be playing the role of the King. Jack White, singer/guitarist for both The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, will be stepping into the Blue Suede Shoes of Elvis Presley. What an awesome bit of news -- one of my favorite modern musicians playing one of my favorite musicians from the past! Will Ferrell and Jack Black (Jack Black and Jack White!) are also rumored to be doing bit parts. No word on who they'll be playing, but here's hoping for an appearance by Ferrell's Neil Diamond. "I wrote this song on the back of a Dixie cup!"

You probably know Jack White from his music, (White Blood Cells is a great place to start if you don't), but he has acted before, including bit parts in both Cold Mountain and Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes. Walk Hard also stars The Office's secretary Jenna Fischer (somewhat disappointing in Blades of Glory), David Koechner ("Whammy!"), and Saturday Night Live's razor-sharp character actress Kristen Wiig. The script was written by Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan, with Kasdan directing. The pair have worked together before, most notably on two wonderful and sadly departed television programs, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. Kasdan's got a little film you should keep an eye out for in the coming months called The TV Set, a very interesting and funny look at the television business. Walk Hard is scheduled to rock and roll into theaters early next year, and as a fan of everyone involved, I can't wait.

Check Out These Furious Balls

There's something vaguely schizophrenic about the career arcs of filmmakers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant. (And by "vaguely" I mean "ridiculously.") On one hand they're the co-creators of stuff like The State and Reno 911!, both of which are certifiably hilarious TV shows. On the other, less enjoyable, hand, these guys wrote not only The Pacifier, but Taxi and Herbie: Fully Loaded as well. (And they also have Let's Go to Prison and Night at the Museum on the way, as well as the Reno 911! movie.)

Mr. Garant makes his directorial debut on a bizarre-looking ping-pong comedy called Balls of Fury, and before you check out the brand-new trailer, give a gander at the blissfully bizarre cast list: Dan Fogler, Maggie Q, George Lopez, Aisha Tyler, James Hong, David Koechner and Christopher Walken, looking as if he just wandered off the set of Dracula: The Spoof.

OK, now you can check the trailer out. I got a few chuckles out of the thing, even if it does feel more like a Netflix rental than an opening night gotta-see.

Brady Set to Helm Comebacks

At first glance, football fans might look at the following story and go, "Wait, since when did Tom Brady start directing films?" Of course, it's understandable there are more than one Tom Brady out there and he (not the dude who plays quarterback for the New England Patriots) has signed on to helm The Comebacks for Fox Atomic.

Pic will star David Koechner (Talladega Nights, Snakes on a Plane) and revolve around a football coach who's lost the most games out of any coach in the entire sport. In an attempt to turn his loser-ish ways around, he heads up a "ragtag college team" and, well, (insert the usual, predictable formula here). Seriously, do we really need another one of these "crappy football team seeks redemption" flicks? At this point, is there anything new to add? I highly doubt it. Then again, checking out Brady's track record, we should be glad Rob Schneider is nowhere to be found.
