Nikolaj Arcel and Guillermo Del Toro Bringing 'Deadman' to Life

One thing I'm loving about Warner Bros and their DC collection is that they aren't neglecting the boys and girls of their Strange Adventures and Weird Western Tales in favor of flashier and more marketable superheroes. So, all should be suitably intrigued by Variety reporting that Warner Bros is bringing Deadman to the bigscreen. The studio has brought Nikolaj Arcel on to direct, and Guillermo Del Toro will produce alongside Don Murphy. Those who follow the exhaustive properties Del Toro has lined up for himself probably remember that he was eying the director's chair for himself a few years back. So, who is Deadman? Well, he's that pale fellow to your right, and was once a circus acrobat named Boston Brand. His happy life on the high wire was cut short by an assailant known only as The Hook, but he was given a second life courtesy of Hindu goddess Rama Kushna. She gave his spirit the power to possess any living person he chose in order to find his assailant, and assist in the ongoing battle against evil. With his circus past, he's naturally brushed crossovers with the unfortunate Graysons, and he's met up with lots of dead DC heroes. He's most recently popped up in that Green Lantern arc everyone's talking about, Blackest Night, and is helping fight the good fight. Despite not being that well known, Deadman is an intriguing, eerie hero and very movie worthy.
No start date has been set for Deadman, and I'm ashamed to say that I'm unfamiliar with Arcel's work. But with Warner Bros, DC, and Del Toro backing him, I'm expecting good things. They seem unable to do wrong at the WB.
Tarzan Swings Into Production -- With Del Toro?

Can you imagine any post-WWII literature being remade and re-imagined as much as the classics of the 19th and early 20th Centuries? Maybe it's just too early. Maybe when I'm an old man, there will be countless adaptations of the Harry Potter books in the way there are presently many versions of Stoker's Dracula, Dickens' A Christmas Carol and Burroughs' Tarzan. The constant reworking of classics, like Tarzan, likely has something to do with earlier films being too safe or censored. This accounts for remakes being sold as being truer to their source or as being an edgier revisit to something that exists as too innocent and simple in the consciousness of pop culture. The stories of Tarzan have been depicted as everything from childish adventures to mature drama, but Warner Bros. believes there is still another way to tell the tale of the man brought up in the wild.
The studio is looking at John Collee to write a script -- hopefully with Master and Commander in mind more than Happy Feet -- and Guillermo Del Toro to direct. The Pan's Labyrinth filmmaker would possibly be interested in taking on the project following the making of Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Del Toro doing Tarzan? We know you have an opinion on this one ...
Del Toro Enlists Deadman Help

Guillermo Del Toro is still not exactly sure what he's going to be doing with Deadman, although he's certainly going to be involved with the DC comic adaptation on some level or another. Right now, he seems lined up to direct the film, which is really a far better scenario than executive producer or something, but not quite as good a scenario as writer/director. Yeah, I'm a Del Toro fanboy. In my opinion, give the man some money, give him a lot of control, and he'll give you a fantastic movie. It looks as though Del Toro will be doing some script work on the film, however. Recent news from Variety tells us Warner Bros. has brought on a relative newcomer named Gary Dauberman to aid Del Toro in scriptwriting -- not sure if this means he's going to write a script for Del Toro to review, or if he's going to punch up a script written by Del Toro, or if the two are going to become buddies and work elbow to elbow at the writing table. Will Dauberman be a good addition to the creative team? Who knows. But keep this in mind -- the man earned his spot on the team with a "western zombies" script he put together, not with some cheesy romance or comedy flick. Granted, we have no way of knowing if the script was any good, but at least it is in the right ball park. And I can't imagine Del Toro would have accepted a writing partner if he weren't impressed, right?
Del Toro's a Deadman

Since we can't go a day without at least six "Hey, we're turning another comic book into a movie!" announcement, clearly all of the major studio heads are screaming "More comics! Bring me more!" at every intern who walks by, and those interns are currently earning their $6.50/hour. One of today's announcements concerns Deadman, once a trapeze artist named Boston Brand (Yes, that's really his name.) who is mysteriously murdered during a performance. After his death, Deadman's spirit is "granted the power to possess the living in order to search for his murderer as well as help the innocent." So, as the wikipedia article on the character suggests, it's basically a really dark cross between Quantum Leap and The Fugitive? Cool.Because he's been around for a while (the character first appeared in 1967), Deadman surely has some hard-core devotees out there who are going to have very strong feelings about the casting of the film. So far, however, nothing has been revealed beyond the presence of comics-lover Guillermo del Toro as a producer. A screenwriter is currently being sought.
