Goldie Hawn to Make Directorial Debut with 'Ashes to Ashes'
Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Deals », Newsstand »
We haven't seen a whole lot of the lovely Goldie Hawn lately -- possibly because her three most recent films (The Banger Sisters, Town & Country and The Out-of-Towners) would inspire even the most dedicated actress to demand a four-year vacation. But she's not retired yet, movie fans! Not only will Ms. Hawn soon be appearing in a new comedy called Ashes to Ashes ... but it's a project she co-wrote and plans to direct! Yep, that's right: Goldie sitting in the director's chair. (Hell, she couldn't do any worse than her last three directors!)According to Variety, Ashes will be about a recent widow who aims to scatter her husband's ashes in Kathmandu ... but loses the urn somewhere along her travels! (I hate it when that happens.) Goldie co-wrote the script with Jeremy Pikser (Bulworth), and if you're worried about her directorial skills, don't be. Her helming credits include a 1997 TV movie called Hope, so obviously she's more than ready to make a feature film all her own. (Aw, I'm just kiddin'. Goldie's still a doll and I hope she does a great job on Ashes to Ashes.) No word yet on whether long-time semi-spouse Kurt Russell will make an appearance in the film, but I bet it'd be pretty cool if he did.
Russell Crowe Will Direct Drama About Aussie Surfers
Filed under: Drama », Universal », Scripts », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand »
Russell Crowe is about to add director to his already impressive resume. The Academy Award winning actor isn't exactly new to directing; he is responsible for two documentary shorts made in 2002. This time, however, he will be helming a dramatic feature based on a documentary he previously narrated called Bra Boys. The original Bra Boys doc is about the surfer subculture in Australia; Crowe's film will focus on three brothers within the group who lead the movement. The film has not yet been written, but Stuart Beattie -- responsible for Collateral -- will be taking on scripting duties.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment will be producing the film and Variety has stated that it's currently unclear whether Crowe will play a role in the film. It's exciting witnessing strong actors -- with even stronger personalities -- moving behind the camera. Of course, it's always a gamble whether a phenomenal actor will turn into a phenomenal director or not. Jack Nicholson might be the king, but even he directed the Chinatown sequel flop The Two Jakes; maybe Crowe will turn out to be more like the next Clint Eastwood.
Michael Keaton Is a Merry Gentleman

I went to see White Noise for precisely one reason -- and it wasn't because I thought the concept of "EVP" was screaming out for its very own "psychological thriller." I walked in because I've been a big fan of Michael Keaton since the Mr. Mom days. (Or if you really want to get obscure, it was since the Working Stiffs days.) I figured Noise was the first time I'd get to see Keaton in a leading role since, what, Jack Frost -- and I didn't want to miss it. Long story short: Keaton was fine, the movie ... not so much. But here's some good news: According to Production Weekly, Mr. Keaton will not only star in the indie drama The Merry Gentleman; he'll be making his directorial debut, too! Newcomer Keith Kupferer will co-star with the one-time Batman, and production is scheduled to begin in Chicago next month. That's pretty much all the news we have so far, but Keaton's cool enough to warrant this kind of attention.
