Perlman/Monaghan Graverobber Flick 'I Sell the Dead' Finds Distributor

Filed under: Deals », Distribution »

Fingers crossed, you may soon see Lost's Charlie telling Hellboy all about how he dug up corpses for The Tall Man -- IFC Films has acquired the rights to distribute Glen McQuaid's horror-comedy I Sell the Dead, which has been making the film-fest rounds since 2008.

The cast is designed to appeal to a certain stripe of film geek: Dominic Monaghan plays an 18th-century graverobber who's giving his confession to a priest (Ron Perlman) before he's led to the gallows for his crimes. In flashback, he tells the story of his life as an apprentice to a professional corpse-nabber (Larry Fessenden, who also produced) as they acquire cadavers for a crazy doctor (Phatasm's Angus Scrimm).

The flick was repped by Submarine's Josh Braun, who also negotiated the sale of Canadian, U.K., Australia, and New Zealand distribution rights to Anchor Bay.

I Sell the Dead opened this year's Slamdance festival, and reactions were mixed. But most reviewers admired first-time director McQuaid's darkly comic sensibility, and his tone that falls somewhere between the old 70's Hammer films and EC's "Tales from the Crypt" comics.

And let's face it -- Perlman and Monaghan together is a genius bit of casting. If the trailer's any indication, we can expect a few zombies, some professional competition from rival grave-robbers, and a lot of seriously dark humor. Check out the trailer:

New 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' T.V. Spot Flaunts the Cast

Filed under: Action », Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels », Trailers and Clips »

A new television spot for X-Men Origins: Wolverine hit the net today, and it's worth watching to see a few of the new characters in action. They're emphasizing Emma Frost in this one, and confirming once and for all that the young punk in the sunglasses is Cyclops. (Guess we know which Marvel couple won't ever get together onscreen!)

What I find curious is the complete and utter lack of Dominic Monaghan or Ryan Reynolds, who supposedly had their parts beefed up. Reynolds is particularly surprising since he's one of the biggest names in the film, and playing a very popular character. Considering they're supposed to be grooming Deadpool for a spinoff, it's pretty odd ... but it might be because fans are in an uproar over his weird ritual scars and faux claws. (Reynolds has confirmed the pale dude fighting Wolverine is Deadpool to the MTV Splash Page. You can howl in outrage, now.)

By the way, Marvel has declared April to be Wolverine Art Appreciation Month in honor of his 35th anniversary. This has nothing to do with appreciating his physique, but instead will see him recreated in the style of famous artists and works of art. They're really pretty cool -- you can see a few of our favorites in the gallery below, and the rest on Marvel's site, and on the Washington Post.

'Wolverine' Reshoots Giving Deadpool and Beak Extra Screen Time

It seems to me that you can probably trust Hugh Jackman -- when he told AICN that the reshoots were centered on other actors, he was right ... although you could argue that beefing up characters and adding scenes is pretty extensive stuff after all.

IESB.net reports that the X-Men Origin: Wolverine reshoots revolve around Deadpool, and that Ryan Reynolds was up in Vancouver shooting additional scenes between Deadpool and Wolverine. Details are scarce, so that's easily something that can fit under Jackman's explanation of "schedule conflicts and weather problems," it could mean that they liked Reynolds' Deadpool so much they wanted more, or it could be some story issues. Who knows.

PopWrap
caught up with Dominic Monaghan, who revealed that his casting was practically an overnight offer. Monaghan only filmed for nine days, and is also one of the actors up in Vancouver for reshoots, and confirmed there were new scenes being added to the film. "We're doing a bit of both, more than anything else, it's an additional scene which I would get shot in the head if I told you anything about. But my character features in a huge set piece with Hugh and Liev [Schreiber]. I think the best thing I can tell you is that it's a flashback scene."

So there you are -- these reshoots may be a sign of hope or disaster, but one thing they mean is that you will get more Deadpool and Beak in the film.

Dominic Monaghan Wants to Return to Middle Earth

I can never decide if the quotes from various Lord of the Rings actors on their participation in The Hobbit are merely wishful thinking on the part of all involved, or if they represent actual plans to bring back every last hobbit, Ent, and Ranger.

The latest rumor comes from Dominic Monaghan, who caught up with MTV at Sundance, and implied there had been talks to include our faithful hobbits in that much desired adaptation of The Hobbit. "They really want us to come back, and I think there's a really strong chance that we might be back. We're not in The Hobbit, no, but I think the idea in [Jackson's, Del Toro's and the other producers'] heads is that the trilogy of the Lord of the Rings films was so beloved by the fans that they're really keen to try to say thank you for the support that they gave to the Lord of the Rings movies and possibly bring back some of those characters that they know and love."

Now, I think the last solid Guillermo del Toro update we had suggested that The Hobbit might be split into two films, but keep strictly to the adventures of Bilbo, Gandalf, the dwarves, and their fight with Smaug, and the battle of Laketown. That sounds so much more sensible than a "bridge" film, as much as Middle Earth geeks would like to see some of those appendices.

On the other hand, everyone from LOTR seems to think they're coming back. I can accept Aragorn since he was actually alive and fighting during the events of The Hobbit. But Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin weren't -- and while the actors could ostensibly play other Baggins, Gamgees, Tooks, and Brandybucks, I really don't want that. The characters I know and love exist solely in Lord of the Rings, and I want to be thanked with an adapation of The Hobbit that is true to J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, not by weird cameos.

Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez Sign for 'Fortuna'

If the current financial crisis is getting you down, how about a post-apocalyptic vision of poverty and murder to cheer you right up? Or, then again, maybe not. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Dominic Monaghan (LOTR) and Freddy Rodriguez (Planet Terror) have signed to star in the horror-thriller, Fortuna.

The flick is set in a future of extreme wealth and poverty. The world's elites have devised a way to reduce poverty by offering citizens the chance to compete in a mysterious game known as Fortuna, in which one person will be whisked away to life of riches and luxury -- what could go wrong? Well, if you have ever seen a movie before you can probably guess that maybe the prize isn't all it is cracked up to be.

Writer-director Barthélémy Grossmann will appear alongside Rodriguez and Monaghan as one of the contestants, and the film is expected to start shooting on location in Bulgaria. According to THR the production is already underway, and, "ghetto like sets are being built for a film Zilber compares to 1973's post apocalyptic thriller "Soylent Green."

Grossmann is a relative unknown to most of us in North America, and this appears to his first foray into English film making (but the recognizable faces of Monaghan and Rodriguez should help the project earn a little attention). Even though it might not be the most original idea for a film (I like to think of it as Running Man meets Regannomics) but I guess everyone has financial collapse on the brain anyway, why not turn it into big-screen entertainment?

Dominic Monaghan Finishes 'Wolverine' -- and Wolverine Knows When To Hold 'Em

Filed under: Fandom », 20th Century Fox », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

After that insane flood of Wolverine news, they've gotten down to business down in Australia, and everything is under tight wraps after that Sabretooth leak.

Dominic Monaghan was recently on Jay Leno and revealed he was all finished with his role. He didn't reveal much, not even what Beak was doing in a Wolverine origin film, but he did praise Hugh Jackman's dedication to his impressive physique. "I don't think I've ever seen a guy in real life look that good. We were doing a scene at night where he was doing press-ups. Not to get his biceps or his shoulders bigger, but to get the veins on his biceps and shoulders bigger." Of slightly more interest, film wise, is Monaghan's vague description of a scene he was filming with Jackman, who showed his dedication was not just for his own muscles. "We did a night shoot where essentially our gang was looking at the back of his head while walking away and he stayed until 6am," the actor continued to say. "He's there for us and I was so impressed with him as a guy."

'Wolverine' Cast Expands Again: Daniel Henney Joins As Agent Zero

The X-Men Origins: Wolverine roster grows bigger.

Variety has confirmed the addition of Dominic Monaghan we reported earlier and added a new face to the mix: Daniel Henney as Agent Zero.

The addition of this character confirms that Wolverine will deal with a Team X storyline, and possibly gives away what Deadpool is doing here. Agent Zero, who has the power of absorbing kinetic energy through impact, was one of the mutant operatives that Weapon X experimented on. Thankfully, his stories were a little cooler, as he took on East Germans and Russian super soldiers alongside Wolverine and Sabretooth. (And speaking of Russian super soldiers -- who wants to take bets Omega Red is cast by next week?)

This still fails to explain what Gambit is doing in Wolverine. And Beak? It's like the writers made a list of Marvel characters Wolverine talked to once, attached it to a board, and threw darts at it. It is pretty hard to make an origin story more convoluted than the one Wolverine already boasts, but it really looks like the filmmakers are going to try. Should we just be glad that they're skipping Wolverine: Origin where he was re-imagined as a Bronte character?

Latest 'Wolverine' Casting -- Dominic Monaghan as Beak?

With most of the mutants, they get some funky superpower mutation and look cool -- whether they can hide it until they need it, like Wolverine, or whether it just results in some super-sexy white hair like Rogue. Then, you get dudes like Beak -aka- Barnell Bohusk. He starts turning into a humanoid bird and feels freakish and ashamed. (And some of the others thought they had it bad...)

Well, if Just Jared is right, Beak is in 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and he'll be played by Dominic Monaghan. He's certainly a man who gets around, between helping to save the world in Hobbit form and being quite Lost. And while this sequel originally seemed to be a lone Logan sort of feature, it's become quite the X-Men extravaganza.

As for Beak's story -- he was a kid born in the Netherlands whose puberty was particularly rough. As Wikipedia describes it: "His body changed into that of a humanoid-bird form, with a beaked face, bulbous eyes, wing-like arms that give him the ability to fly (albeit clumsily), talons on his hands and feet, and double-jointed knees." He went into hiding over his appearance, and then found his way to the Xavier Institute. I'm not sure how he'll fit into this story, but he did take over Wolverine's shack to house his winged babies with Angel Salvadore, so maybe that'll come into play.

Dominic Monaghan Gets Creepy With 'Pet'

Filed under: Thrillers », Casting », MGM »

As a die-hard Lost fan, I'm going to miss "Charlie" (or as Claire says, "CHAHlee"), the character played by Dominic Monaghan. But at least I'll get to see the actor return to the big screen in Pet. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Monaghan has been cast as the lead in the psychological thriller, in which he plays a deranged animal shelter employee who kidnaps his teenage crush and obsessively holds her captive as his pet. The only other plot point provided by the trade is that the woman he's imprisoned is "not who she seems to be." That could mean anything, from her being an alien to her being a shape-shifter who turns into an actual animal to her being something more realistic, such as a female "MacGyver" who ends up escaping her cage and wrecking vengeance on "Seth", as Monaghan's character is called.

For Monaghan, Pet seems like a big step further into unlikable roles. Most of us became familiar with the actor as one of the lovable Hobbits in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Then we fell for his flawed rocker on Lost, though except for in the very end, we were made to lose favor for "Charlie", as he continually lied, shot up heroin and acted like a spoiled little bitch. Then he frustrated many male Lost fans by becoming the unlikely boyfriend of his co-star Evangeline Lilly (I'm unsure if they are still a couple -- anyone know?). Now as a creepy "Buffalo Bill" type, he's sure to lose even more of his appeal -- at least on screen, anyway. Pet begins shooting sometime in the next few months under the direction of Irish filmmaker Edna Enda McCallion (at least I think she's the director, the trade doesn't make it entirely clear), who can be seen in this clip giving a behind-the-scenes look at the making of his music video for the Nine Inch Nails song "Deep".
