Want to Score a Free Score or Two?

They claim that Seppuku Paradigm did the score for the harsh-as-hell horror flick, Martyrs (now on DVD -- beware the Blockbuster cut!), but I don't remember hearing any music... just Scott Weinberg screaming and squealing and squirming about when we saw it at Fantastic Fest last year. It was pretty much like watching The Love Guru with him all over again.Well, those handy-dandy fellas over at Twitch say that the film's composers, Alex and Willie Cortés, have made their score for the film freely available online. In fact, their only other score -- for the unseen-by-me sci-fi mystery Eden Log -- has ALSO been made available to all. It's a veritable festivus for soundtrack junkies!
And why? Hell if I can tell, though tempted as one may be to throw around the phrase 'economic generosity' these days, I won't. Maybe these are just two cool guys who made two cool scores that they'd rather have people to listen to than pay for. It's a downright hippie stance, if you ask me, but we'll let it slide this time -- but only because, y'know, it has something to do with movies.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Hugh Jackman returns to the role of the adamantium-clawed Wolverine. I loved the first two X-Men features and even kind of liked the third one, but the idea of Wolvie going solo without the rest of Xavier's crew leaves me kind of cold. Start sharpening your claws for a May 1 release.
Eden Log
The trailer for this French film is delightfully vague. Apparently the movie portrays a bleak future set in a subterranean world. I'm not real clear on the details, but the imagery is fascinating. This one goes into limited release in February.
I Love You, Man
Paul Rudd plays a man about to get married, but finds himself without male friends and in need of a best man. Soon he's good pals with Sydney (Jason Segel), but his relationship with his fiance begins to suffer. Both of these actors have made me laugh before, but I don't know about this one. Spread the love on March 20.
Against the Dark
Another zombie apocalypse? Nope, it's a vampire apocalypse this time, and with much of the world's population annihilated our only hope is a group of vampire hunters led by -- wait for it -- Steven Seagal. I'm not a Seagal fan but I can see this one having a certain B movie appeal. It comes out on February 10.
Set Your Sights on Magnet's Six-Shooter Series!

I've done reports on the After Dark horror series, the Asylum assembly line, and the monumentally moronic Maneater collection -- so I see nothing all that strange about throwing a little genre love towards Magnet's new Six-Shooter Series. (The only difference this time around is that we're going to be talking about GOOD genre films.)To those who demand to know what the hell phrases like "Magnet Six-Shooter" mean, here's an explanation: Magnolia Films recently kick-started a genre-intensive division (called Magnet Releasing), and the guys are pretty psyched about their next six flicks. There, I've just demystified the phrase "Magnet Six-Shooter." You all owe me three dollars. And here's what's coolest about a six-flick genre series that's run by Magnolia Pictures: You'll actually get something EXOTIC out of the mix.
To use the finest example imaginable, it is Magnet Releasing that was lucky enough to land U.S. distribution rights for the stunningly awesome Let the Right One In, which is dazzling people all over the festival circuit. (And that was a great roll of the dice, as Magnolia grabbed it well before it was earning 5-star reviews across the board.) The film will open in limited release on October 24, but be sure to keep an eye out for the DVD as well. This flick is a keeper for sure.
Toronto '08 Announces the 'Midnight Madness' Slate!

OK, so I missed my flight to San Diego this morning and I've had a really rotten day, but there's always a small silver lining, right? In the movie world there is: JUST announced (like, within the last few minutes!) is the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness '08 line-up. And, as usual, it looks pretty damn awesome.I've heard some really good things about Pascal Laugier's Martyrs, Franck Vestiel's Eden Log, and Jon Hewitt's Acolytes -- plus I've been itchin' to see JT Petty's horror-western The Burrowers for over a year now! Other selections include Pracha Pinkaew's Chocolate, Toshio Lee's Detroit Metal City, and Mark Hartley's Not Quite Hollywood. Click right here for all ten of TIFF's Midnight picks --and of course you can expect all sorts of expansive festival coverage once TIFF rolls out in early September. Woo!

French Horror 'Eden Log' Will Be Unleashed by Magnet

In his review of Frontiere(s), our own Scott Weinberg wrote: "After Haute Tension hit the scene and caused a little bit of buzz (if very little attention from the U.S. box office), it only seemed to be a matter of time before a few new freaky French horror flicks would rear their unseemly heads." I haven't seen Frontiere(s), which was recently bumped from the HorrorFest lineup, but I saw the absolutely ferocious Inside (A l'interieur) at Fantastic Fest. You can read Scott's full review for his spot-on take; alternatively, you can read Harry Knowles' review at Ain't It Cool News, where I was mentioned, though not by name: "I saw many on my row hiding their eyes." Yup, I was one of the "many"!More French horror is on the way. Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has announced that it has acquired North American distribution rights to Eden Log, according to Variety. The premise is that "a man ... wakes up in total darkness at the bottom of a cave, unaware of how he got there. While pursued by a scary creature, the man tries to climb back to the Earth's surface through a cemetery-like maze abandoned by a mysterious corporation called Eden Log." Sounds like Resident Evil meets The Descent, doesn't it? But the French-language teaser looks sweet -- if, like me, you enjoy dark chocolate brought to a boil. "Bon voyage!"
Directed by Franck Vestiel, Eden Log is currently in post-production. The film is scheduled for release in France at Christmas with North American release following sometime in 2008. I can't wait to hide my eyes again.
