Confirmed: 'The Hobbit' Will Be Two Films
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », MGM », New Line », Warner Brothers », Family Films », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
We've all known for a while now that Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson's teams of merry filmmakers were planning to make TWO movies out of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, but now we have confirmation of the plan by the filmmakers themselves, and they doled out a few small details to Empire Magazine in honor of the publication's 20th birthday. And those quotes go a little like this:Del Toro: "We've decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur."
Jackson: "We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy."
As Empire's Chris Hewitt observes, this should put to bed those theories that one film would focus on The Hobbit and the second would be some sort of bridging appendices miscellaneous whatnot. Expect a lot more on The Hobbit over the next three years, including every nerdly little tidbit we can get our pipeweed-lovin' hands on.
And hey, Happy Birthday Empire!
Danny Boyle: I'll Die Before I Make Another Sci-Fi Movie
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fox Searchlight »
Empire Magazine (and website) recently asked its readers to come up with a bunch of questions for filmmaker Danny Boyle, and get this: Most of the questions were actually pretty intelligent! Mr. Boyle was rolling all over most of the world (but not the United States ... yet) in an effort to promote his latest film, an ambitious sci-fi project called Sunshine, but he found a few minutes to answer a good number of those questions. My favorite response from the esteemed moviemaker came after he was asked when he'll return to the science fiction genre. The reply was "I will die before I return to sci-fi." Heh. I guess Sunshine was a pretty tough shoot. The fan-centric mega-interview covers a wide array of Boyle-related topics, from that long-discussed Trainspotting sequel and the upcoming 28 Weeks Later, but most of the piece focuses on Sunshine -- which opened in England last week but we have to wait for freakin' Septemer god that makes me mad... Whoops, sorry. Mr. Boyle also lets us know what his next film will be: Slum Dog Millionare is the title, and, as Chris Campbell pointed out last week, it's about a poor kid who hits the lottery on the Hindi equivalent of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Looks like the director will be following a "big" movie with a "little" one, kinda like he did with 28 Days Later and Millions.
Another great quote from Boyle is "All I can say about Transformers is that I hope Michael Bay doesn't find himself near me when he's on fire." Heh.
Empire Looks for Super November
One thing I will probably never understand about published magazines is the off-by-a-month numbering system some of them use. Like automobiles and certain video game titles, magazine issues frequently come out an entire month before the identification on the magazine claims. I'm sure there is a perfectly rational explanation for why this is the case; feel free to share it with me if you like. I'll still probably think it's silly, but at least I will be slightly more enlightened. In any case, the November issue of Empire will go on sale September 29 (this Friday) and it will feature nothing but superhero movie news. The issue is being billed as an "ultimate superhero preview" and promises news on "Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and many more!" So if you're into purchasing magazines, this might be a good one to get your hands on ... if not, swing by their website in the coming days to see what they've learned. And as always, stay tuned to Cinematical for plenty of superhero goodness -- if Empire covers anything we haven't heard yet, you can bet we'll pass it along to you.
