The Scary Bits: Return of The Scary Bits

Filed under: Horror », The Scary Bits »

I know, it's been a while since I've written one of these gore-soaked missives, but the upside to that is ... we have a lot to talk about! And since I wrote this during a lazy Sunday (happy belated holidays, btw) I figure it's time to break out the candy-coated bullet points! Let's start out with a freaky fistful of upcoming DVD releases:

Currently strewn across shelves are Donkey Punch and Vinyan, two festival-heavy horror films that couldn't possibly be more different. One's about venal young jerks, and the other is about heartbroken (but stupid) parents. Really bad things happen to all of them.

This Tuesday we're getting the old-school-style monster movie Splinter, which is really quite good. If you like prickly monsters, that is. On the same day ... whoa. It looks like someone actually bothered to exhume flicks like Repossessed, Slaughter High, and My Best Friend Is a Vampire. That sound you just heard was my Netflix queue getting fatter.

Come the 21st we get J.T. Petty's The Burrowers, which played (and played well) at last year's Fantastic Fest, and Robert Hall's Laid to Rest, which is sort of like a non-snarky slasher throwback with a hint of Phantasm-style weirdness. Couldn't find a stranger double feature than these two, believe me.

And mark your calendars, gore-lovers, for April 28, because that's when Martyrs finally hits R1 DVD. According to the UK poster, Scoot Weinberg says it "makes Saw look like Sesame Street," which is one of the most shameless blurbs I've ever heard. Even if the guy is correct, brilliant, and really handsome. (Trust me, this is one rough horror movie.) Also on this Tuesday we'll get the unofficial Donnie Darko sequel, and a movie starring Amber Benson called One-Eyed Monster. I leave the jokes to you fine folks.

'Time Traveler's Wife' Gets a Date

In my last rambling screed against certain release dates, I noted that I couldn't speak for the latest hiding place for The Time Traveler's Wife, the oft-delayed adaptation of the acclaimed romance novel. From the look of things, though, Warner Bros. has bumped back the equally romantic Final Destination 4 3D back to August 28th in order to give the weekend of the 14th to Wife.

And what a summer this has become for star Eric Bana (he's the time traveler, not the wife). Between this, Star Trek in May and Funny People in July, the main Munich man has a nice marquee streak going for him, and of course, any excuse for a little more Rachel McAdams beyond April's State of Play is nothing to sniff at either (unless this thing turns out to be quite the tearjerker).

The move puts Wife up against the likes of family comedy Bandslam and sci-fi mystery District 9, while Destination now opens opposite Rob Zombie's Halloween 2, which is exactly the type of horror offering that would make me want to see FD4-3D instead.

Casting Bites, Part One: From 'Public Enemies' to a 'Final Destination'

Casting Bites: Williamson, Dunn, McCord & Sandvig

Filed under: Comedy », Horror », Thrillers », Casting »

Check out this collection of old and new faces, courtesy of Variety:
  • He became super famous, or at least, super recognizable after jutting out his lower lip and playing Bubba in Forrest Gump. Now Mykelti Williamson is doomed to some terrible death -- or at least, he's doomed to be surrounded by it. He's picked up a role in the next accident fest -- Final Destination 4. Unfortunately, there's no word on who he'll play -- whether he'll have a bit part, or figure prominently. Either way, you'll get to see him in 3D! In the meantime, you can catch him in Vice, a new drama starring Michael Madsen and Daryl Hannah.
  • Then we've got Saturday Night Live alum Nora Dunn. Recently, she's been hanging out on the Pineapple Express, but now she's also getting spiritual -- or at least, into the spiritual business. Dunn has signed on to play a literary agent in the upcoming Jeff Daniels film The Dream of the Romans, which I told you about the other day. Daniels stars as a reclusive writer of spiritual books who gets hounded for advice by a few eager fans.
  • Finally, there's more talent signing on to the Patrick Swayze comedy Fired Up, which focuses on two guys who sign up for cheerleader's camp to pick up girls -- AnnaLynne McCord (Nip/Tuck) and Jake Sandvig (Sky High). There is no word on McCord's character (although I bet it would be safe to assume that she'll be a cheerleader), while Sandvig will play some dude named Downey. A-W-E-S-O-M-E. (I really hope this is good, for Swayze's sake.)

'Final Destination 4' Goes 3-D with New Cast

Filed under: Horror », Casting », New Line », Remakes and Sequels »

If ever a horror series depended less on character and more on the ingenuity of the writers in conjuring up death scenes, it's this one. Love 'em or hate 'em, horror sequels almost always have a reliably evil villain we can depend upon, whether it's Jason in Friday the 13th, Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street, Pinhead in Hellraiser, or Jigsaw in Saw. But in the original Final Destination, the big bad antagonist was ... Death!

Yup, Death gets cheated out of killing a group of teenagers when one of them has a premonition that their plane is about to crash. In a terror-ific set piece -- a hallmark of the series -- we see the fiery explosion, and the kids spend the rest of the picture trying to escape their fate, not easy to do when Death appears to be such good buddies with Rube Goldberg. That tradition is set to continue with Final Destination 4; principal photography begins this month in New Orleans, according to Variety.

Shantel VanSanten (pictured - yay for Texas!), Bobby Campo and Haley Webb have been cast in the starring roles, with Nick Zano, Krista Allen (yay for sexy horror mothers!) and Andy Fiscella providing support. As Monika previously reported, David Richard Ellis (Cellular, Snakes on a Plane) returns to direct; he helmed Final Destination 2, which featured that amazing, out of control, highway log-truck pile-up; FD4 scripter Eric Bress was also credited as co-writer on that installment. This time, the premonition is about a deadly race car crash. Oh, did I mention that the whole picture is going to be shot in 3-D?!!! If you have the stomach for it, this could be a very memorable thrill ride. No word yet on when New Line plans to unleash this sick puppy.

More 'Final Destination' Heading Our Way

Oh, the irony of Final Destination -- there never seems to actually be one, at least for the series. Personally, I'm waiting for installment #10, where all the first victims come back to life just to get terrorized again -- it sounds dumb, but doesn't that always happen once films hit the double digits in sequels? Or, maybe the victims fight back as some sort of zombie war against the intangible force. But for now, the Final Destination 2 team has come back for number 4, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- 2 co-writer Eric Bress wrote the script, and David R. Ellis has signed on to direct. This should be good news for FD fans. While the second made less than the other two, it's gotten its share of praise for their "elaborately orchestrated killings."

That's not all. If you thought buses slamming into victims and spraying blood wasn't enough, rejoice -- that blood and those death machines are going to fly at us again. Oh yes, Final Destination is a solid passenger on that 3D train. As THR says: "The premise of the series is that even if you cheat death once, a force that is death itself will stalk you until it finishes what is started, usually in a gruesome fashion." This time around, there's no word on plot, but it will be new teens getting terrorized and new forms of death. If you want to know what sort of death -- just think about what would be creepy to see in 3D, and you're probably on the right track. I wonder if there will be any snakes. Ellis directed Snakes on a Plane, after all.
