Cinematical has just received this exclusive final poster for Astro Boy, set to fly into theaters on October 23rd. Based on the classic Japanese manga (and eventual television series), this spanky new colorful version of Astro Boy stars the voices of Freddy Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy and Nathan Lane -- and it follows a young robot with big-time super powers who ventures off on a journey in search of acceptance when he's doesn't quite meet the replacement son expectations of the scientist who created him. And it's on this journey that Astro Boy faces his toughest challenge yet: help save earth from an alien race threatening the planet.

From Todd Gilchrist's fantastic post, Astro Boy, Rebuilt and Reborn for the Silver Screen: "In modern computer animation there seems to be two standards – there's Pixar, and there's everybody else. But watching three clips from the film that were mostly finished, Astro Boy promised to have a style all its own – one that feels decidedly digital but is also elegant; one sequence in particular evoked the bustling cityscapes of the Star Wars planet Coruscant. But notwithstanding Astro Boy's familiar, cylindrical profile, the other robots who inhabit his world are intriguingly weird, operating less according to a semblance of scientific plausibility than the whim of their creators."

Cinematical has been given an exclusive look at the first official still for Astro Boy (see above), while our very good looking cohorts over at Moviefone have just debuted the first teaser (see below or over on Moviefone in glorious HD). Based on the popular Japanese manga and television series, this computer-animated 3-D version of Astro Boy is being produced by those wizards over at Imagi Animation Studios, and stars the voices of Freddy Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane and Eugene Levy.

From the synopsis: "Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers. Powered by pure positive "blue" energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly-not to mention the purest spirit on the planet. Embarking on a journey across the planet to discover his powers, Astro Boy encounters a netherworld of robot gladiators and other comic characters, and learns the joys and emotions of being human. When he learns his friends and family are in danger, Astro Boy marshals all his awesome super powers and returns to Metro City, in a valiant effort to save everything he cares about and to embrace his place in the world."

Astro Boy will soar into theaters on October 23, 2009.

Though its release date was pushed back yet again (it's not coming out in theaters until this February), a new poster for Teeth has hit the net. I absolutely loved this flick when I caught it in Berlin earlier this year, and even had a chance to sit down and talk with the film's star, Jess Weixler, about how freaked out I was after watching it. She called it the "perfect date movie," and I'd agree, except I'm not so sure this is good for couples who haven't, um, gone all the way yet. Might freak the dudes out a tad. In Teeth, Weixler plays Dawn, a teen abstinence preacher who discovers teeth down in her private area and then ultimately uses them to her advantage. Oh yeah, it gets nasty. Hopefully the Weinstein Co. left the flick as is and didn't chop the hell out of it. (Bonus: Check out the trailer over on Moviefone.)

A new poster for the much buzzed-about Nanking has arrived. Directed by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman, the film tells the real-life story of how, in 1937, invading Japanese raped and murdered thousands of Chinese. Cinematical's Kim Voynar called Nanking a "deeply affecting film," and added: "Twenty-two Westerners stayed in Nanking to try to do something to help, and through their letters and journals we feel the moral dilemma they faced: They could get out and secure their own safety, but what about their Chinese friends and neighbors who couldn't leave? Who would protect them?" Nanking recently became one of the 15 docs shortlisted for an Oscar nod. Finally, there's a new poster out for The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the popular books, and starring the adorable Freddy Highmore. Film tells of three siblings who find themselves pulled into an alternate world following their family's move into the run-down Spiderwick Estate. It kind of reminds me of the Narnia films on acid.
