Fantastic Fest: Man Thongs and Robot Geishas

Filed under: Festival Reports », Fandom », Exhibition »

Just to prove to you how wacky things get at Fantastic Fest, we present you with a Robogeisha gallery embedded below. Immediately following yesterday's first Secret Screening, which ended up being the bizarre Japanese robot/love/battle-fest that is Robogeisha, Alamo Drafthouse owner Tim League, director Noburo Iguchi and other crew members marched out wearing enormous sumo diapers, or mawashis. They struck some battle poses and generally showed how us all how tough they were.

That was until two sword-wielding, bikini-wearing female Tengu attacked them. Not only did they shame them verbally, but they also shoved darts into their buttocks. Extremely cheeky. If you've ever needed physical proof that a theater owner is extremely dedicated to his job, then look no further than this photo right here. You think nearly exposing yourself on stage would be enough, but he goes the extra mile with physical pain. Even fellow film writer Devin Faraci of CHUD managed to endure a Tengu attack of his own.

Oh, and the movie was weird as well.

SDCC: Day 0 and Preview Night Pictures

Comic-Con's "Preview Night" is a bit of a joke. The idea is that only registered professionals (and how they consider me professional is beyond me) are supposed to get access to an exclusive sneak peek of the show floor the evening before the show officially starts. In theory you'd be able to easily walk through the massive San Diego Convention Center and check things out in a leisurely fashion.

However, in practice it's an entirely different story. Crowds of people crammed everywhere, moving at near-cattle speeds. It's almost enough to drive you nuts ... until you remember it'll be much worse when the show is actually in full swing. So I headed inside in search of interesting photos, and my favorite has to be this shot of a $130 V.I.N.C.E.N.T. vinyl robot toy from Disney's The Black Hole. I am really craving that sucker.

Anyhow, check out all of our opening night photos in the gallery below, and head beyond the break to watch on video what it's like entering preview night. We'll be bringing you a lot more from the show floor throughout the show, so stay tuned.

First Pics of New Haven Set for 'Indy 4'

With shooting set to begin tomorrow, you knew it was only a matter of time before someone with a camera headed over to New Haven, Connecticut to snap some photos of the retro transformation currently underway. The Unofficial Indiana Jones Movie Blog now has a gallery of pics up for you to check out; all of which were taken in and around the town of New Haven and feature exterior shots of storefronts and such. In order to make this town look more like 1957 (the year the film is apparently set), folks had to find a ton of stuff appropriate with the time period. One building on Chapel Street received an entire facelift and a huge F.W. Woolworth sign has replaced whatever was there before (supposedly a Starbucks). Other little shops simply changed up their storefront windows, adding toys and clothes along with signs that read "These are not for sale."

From what we know, Indy won't be visiting any of these stores; instead, the street will be used for a chase scene of sorts featuring Indiana Jones on a motorcycle and a couple black vans. Yet, still, a tremendous amount of detail went into making this small town feel more like the 1950s. As we previously told you, shooting will take place for 10 days (with production taking off July 1 and July 4), and, apart from these street scenes, they'll be a good amount of stuff shot on Yale's Old Campus, including newly-written scenes inside Yale Law School. While we await a ton more spy photos to pop up, feel free to check out the first photo of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, as well as video from the first day on set. Indiana Jones and the City of Gods (working title) will arrive in theaters on May 22, 2008.
