A Glimpse of Gambit, Wolverine's Co-Star

Cheesy clothing aside, I think Kitsch embodies Gambit quite well. He's got the right amount of scruff, the right hair, and he flings his cards with a casual machismo. This character is one of my biggest stumbling blocks for the movie, because I just don't get where he fits into a Wolverine origin story. He was a buddy to Wolverine in many of the comics, but was usually relegated to being a French Captain Obvious. "Mon ami, you are going to use them adamantium claws, no?" Fans love him though, and after being left out of three X-Men movies, I suspect they've used any excuse they can to work him in. But I know Gambit fans are psyched -- and the fact that he's probably being groomed for a spin-off should make up for his lack of X-Men screentime.
News Bites: Director Natalie Portman, Ozzy, God & Gambit

Some news bites for you:- Almost a year ago, Natalie Portman whipped up her own shingle and started to look into making Amos Oz's A Tale of Love and Darkness. She was hoping to get Jake and Maggie's mom, Naomi Foner, to pen it. Things have changed a bit since then, as Variety reports. The project is still in the works, but now Portman is planning to film it in the novel's original language -- Hebrew.
- If no one is making a documentary about your family, make it yourself! Variety reports that Ozzy's son, Jack Osbourne, is whipping up a documentary on his famous dad, with the help of mom Sharon. He says: "MTV couldn't show the darkness and so they used all the goofy things, but that's not really who he was at the time." He continues: "I want people to see John Osbourne as the guy I grew up with, the tormented, complex musician whose personal demons manifest themselves in so many crazy, unique ways."
- Ehren Kruger, who was the pen behind Transformers, is now looking to God, but in a more bloody and bad guy-filled way. Variety reports that he will adapt Boston Teran's God is a Bullet, which focuses on "the journey of a California lawman forced to go undercover to rescue his daughter from the ruthless gang of criminals who've abducted her." Let's hope big machines with bad dialogue don't enter the mix.

Have we finally reached an age where practically the entire cast for a huge, highly-anticipated movie is announced not through the trades, but on various movie news websites? I think we have, and I think the name of that movie is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Last night, we told you how Ryan Reynolds was suiting up to play Deadpool in the spin-off flick, and now Superhero Hype tells us Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) has signed a three-picture deal to star as Gambit (aka Remy Lebeau) in the Gavin Hood-directed film, due out May 1, 2009.
Gambit, a fellow mutant and member of the X-Men, "possesses the ability to manipulate kinetic energy as well as limited hypnosis. He is also skilled in card throwing, hand-to-hand combat, and the use of a Bo, " so says Wiki. When you compare a picture of the character to Kitsch, they look almost exactly the same -- so it's a good match in that department. Fans have been itching to see Gambit show up on the big screen for some time now; the character had his name show up in X2 when Mystique hacked a system holding mutant names, and he was rumored to be involved in X-Men: The Last Stand, with a bunch of actors auditioning for the role, but never showed up. Originally, he was supposed to appear in the prison convoy scene.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine will star Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Danny Huston (William Stryker), Lynn Collins (Silver Fox) and (we think) Ryan Reynolds (as Deadpool). Talk about an eclectic cast! What do you think?
EXCLUSIVE: Channing Tatum as He-Man?
Filed under: Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom »
Cinematical was lucky enough to visit the set of Fighting last night in New York City, where Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard were shooting scenes for the new drama directed by Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints). It was a night shoot, and so this writer didn't leave the set until close to one in the morning (which was their lunch!), but before I bounced home to my bed, I managed to speak with Tatum for a bit about the role, and other -- more superhero-ish stuff -- that might be in store for the actor down the line. Of course, the first thing we were wondering was whether Tatum was among those who auditioned for the new Justice League of America movie.
Has he been approached to play any superhero roles? Tatum said, "Yeah, yeah, I mean a few, a few -- I don't know, I just can't quite see myself as that yet. I like that, and eventually one day I'd like to do it; I just don't want to do it yet." Did he audition for any of the Justice League roles? "No, none of the Justice League. The only superhero I've ever auditioned for was Gambit, for the third X-Men. They ended up pulling the character out of the movie. I don't know, someone told me about a crazy He-Man thing -- I don't know, I can't quite figure it out. I need to really want it. I can only go after something that I really want bad."
Tatum also revealed that there is one superhero-ish project that he is working on: "There is a hero thing that I'm actually producing. It's called Plucker. It's a graphic novel by Brom, and I got it set up at Temple Hill, and it's now set up at New Line -- it's going to be a crazy sort of fantastical story about a jack-in-the-box that saves this boy. It's a weird, sort of darker, trippier version of Toy Story." When asked if it would be animated or live action, Tatum replied, "I don't know, we have to find a director that has a vision for it first."
Could you see Channing Tatum in any superhero roles? If so, which ones?
Simon Kinberg Explains Why We Didn't Get Gambit in X3
Filed under: Action », Casting », Deals », Fandom », Scripts », Politics », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
Regular readers will know I was greatly disappointed by the severe lack of Gambit in the most recent X-Men movie ... or in any X-Men movie to date, for that matter. This most recent film seemed to pack in mutants at every possible opportunity, including some pretty crazy ones, and still didn't manage to bring me Remy LeBeau. Gambit is not my favorite mutant, but he ranks reasonably high on the list (when he's not busy being Death, anyway). Simon Kinberg, one of the primary script authors for X-Men: The Last Stand recently made some comments explaining why they chose not to bring Gambit on board, and they at least make some sense. Kinberg basically said "We wrote a cameo for him, and then really felt like it was better to save Gambit and give him a major role in a future X-Men movie, rather than give him a cameo where fans would be saying " ... that's all I get of Gambit?"" And he's correct in this matter, I think. Had they chose to cram him in somewhere without giving him a place on the team I probably would have been just as disappointed as I was by his not existing at all. The question now seems to be... future X-Men movie? I thought we were all pretending the franchise ends here. ...
