Wham! Movie in Trouble
Filed under: Music & Musicals »
Wait, there's a Wham! movie in the works? Apparently so, according to The Guardian, which has an article highlighting the problem with the band biopic before it even gets off the ground. The film, about the '80s pop duo featuring George Michael, is being planned by former Wham! co-manager Simon Napier-Bell, who also worked with The Yardbirds, Japan and T.Rex/Marc Bolan (man, I'd really rather see a Bolan biopic). One thing Napier-Bell is known for during the Wham! years is negotiating the duo's 1985 concert in Beijing, marking the first live performance by a Western group in communist China. As for film work, Napier-Bell worked on the scores for What's New Pussycat (for which he re-edited Burt Bacharach's original score) and Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush. The Guardian's quote from Napier-Bell regarding the Wham! movie seems to come directly off the guy's website, on which he answers a fan's query about whether or not a Wham! movie will ever happen. Napier-Bell notes that people are interested in such a project but that it would all depend on George Michael, who could either disallow rights to the group's music or demand too much control. He states that Michael would likely get to say yes or no to any scripts that come about. I'm sure a greenlight on any film would also depend on whether or not there's any actual demand for a Wham! movie. Are there any fans out there excited about such a thing?
Craig talks Bond

While Daniel Craig is off promoting his small role in
Munich, it seems all anyone wants to know is Bond. In talking with MTV, he praises the job Paul Haggis has done on the script and says, "the lead girl part is
fantastic, the characters are all fantastic. We're making a Bond movie first and foremost." Yeah, too bad every
actress (Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie)you approach for that "fantastic" girl part
turns it down.
Although, in the end, it will be another Bond film, Craig does admit it's not going to be the Bond we're used to. "[Casino] is going to be very different from anything else. There's a lot of similarities with the book but yes, it's been updated. It has to be. It's a suspension of disbelief that we're renewing Bond, and that this is the first time you see him." Craig admits this new look may not go over so well with the fans. "Yes, I could fail miserably, but maybe I can do something that's different and make the franchise last another thirty years -- as opposed to another three."
In other Bond related news, Martha scooped the other day that George Michael was now the frontrunner to write the theme for Casino Royale. According to a friend of the singer, it's all supposed to be kept on the down low. "George is really chuffed that he's been asked to meet up with the guys behind Casino Royale. It's very low key at the moment, but the people behind the movie are keen to make this work."
Sorry, Robbie: George is the man

According to a report in England's Daily Record, George
Michael has been approached the write the theme to Casino
Royale. He recently had a meeting with the "movers and shakers" involved in the film and, though it's
early days yet, said movers and shakers are reportedly very eager to hire Michael. According to a friend of the singer
(grain of salt now firmly in place), this could be just the start of heavy involvement in the movies for him. If the
"friend" is to be believed, Michael has already talked with Robert
De Niro about doing some work with him (the two met at Tribeca, and "Robert told George that he was a big
fan." Is that not in the top 10 of things you never thought you'd hear?), and is eager to make a place for himself
in the film world when he returns to recording. For anyone who loves the cheesy awesomeness of the best Bond themes (My personal favorite is For Your Eyes Only - talk about cheese), this is great news. Robbie Williams might have been better, but if we can't have him, the talented half of Wham! is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
