Here we are, folks. No televised ceremony. No red carpet. No Ryan Seacrest (Thank God!). Because of the writer's strike, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has decided to announce this year's Golden Globe Award winners via a press conference. We'll be posting the film-related winners below in real time, so keep refreshing the page ...
Award winners listed below ...
Biggest surprises? Not really. The Hollywood Foreign Press leaned heavily on the foreign nods, and I suppose the words "home-skillet" didn't hit, well, home with the HFPA. Is Atonement really the best film of the year? I feel like it's tricking a lot of people. What do you think?

For those of you who don't feel like watching some boring press conference on TV, you might as well keep it tuned in to Cinematical, as we'll be live-blogging whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press gives us in just about one hour from now. In the meantime, feel free to scroll through our Golden Globe prediction post, where a bunch of our staff members got together and voted on who we think will win in all 14 of the film-related categories. Alternatively, you can check out our sister site TV Squad's predictions for the TV-related categories. And if you're still looking to kill some time before this epic press conference, head on over to Moviefone and check out their official Golden Globes hub. There's lots of content for you to sift through, but make sure you return to this page at 9PM EST to see the winners. (Unfortunately, we will not be live-blogging the episode of American Gladiators which is set to follow the Globe announcements on NBC. Sorry Mayhem. Maybe next year.)From the Editor's Desk: Globes and Gladiators

So in case you still don't know how this whole Golden Globe thing is going to play out on Sunday, here's what you're getting: From 7pm to 9pm, Matt Lauer will host a two hour Dateline called Going for Gold, which will lead up to an hour-long press conference at 9pm EST. During that hour-long press conference, someone will be giving out the Golden Globe awards in the 25 previously-announced categories. None of the actors or actresses will be there to accept these awards, nor are they expected to show up on this Dateline special (although that might change). So who will Matt Lauer talk to for two hours? Hand-puppets, maybe? That would be cool.
The Hollywood Foreign Press? Here's all they got (from a press release earlier this week): "We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled." There you go! You got to keep your day. I don't know about you, but that's so damn ... comforting. No one is showing up. NBC isn't televising it. All parties are canceled. People are losing millions of dollars. But you got to keep your day. Way to go HFPA!
But I haven't even told you the best part yet. Following this press conference, you're probably expecting some sort of entertainment show like Access Hollywood to come on and talk about the winners. Nope. Get this: American Gladiators. Oh yes, NBC will follow their Globes press conference with an episode of American F**king Gladiators. Here's an idea: How about you let the Gladiators announce the awards. Oh what I would give to hear the following announcement: "And now, here with the best actress, drama award is ... Mayhem... who you can see pile-driving a guy trying to drop little balls in a bucket in just a few minutes on a brand new episode of American Gladiators." Take that Keira Knightley ... and your little Atonement thingy. If there was a God, he would make it so. Mayhem for the gold!
Steven Spielberg to Get His Special Golden Globe Award Next Year
Filed under: Awards », Celebrities and Controversy », Fandom »
Sure, in the grand scheme of things they're kind of meaningless, but I'm pretty bummed out about the cancellation of The Golden Globe awards this year. A few of us here at Cinematical were going to live-blog the ceremony, and we always have a ton of fun ranking on all the stars via IM conversations and, well, I'll miss that. We'll still live-blog whatever awkward news broadcast they're going to hold, but it won't be the same. One of the things I was actually looking forward to was this year's Steven Spielberg tribute. Call me a sucker for all those montage sequences, but when you're talking about Spielberg, I'm sure it would've been pretty fun to watch. Others are more jaded when it comes to tributes and Hollywood ass-kissing. Me? I like it because it reminds me of films I need to re-watch or still need to sit down with for a first time.
The good news is that Spielberg's tribute has been postponed a year and, instead, will air during the 2009 Golden Globe awards. Hey, at least they'll be able to utilize clips from this summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As far as this "news broadcast" goes, I imagine it will turn out to be the oddest thing ever. Though they're calling it a news conference, no other networks (aside from NBC) are allowed to show up. The WGA considers the whole thing "struck work," so I wouldn't expect to see any stars. Oh well. We'll have more fun with it over on Cinematical, so feel free to stop by here and get the scoop from us. Last I checked, no writer was standing behind me with a picket sign.
