Cinematical Picks: The Golden Globe Winners -- Best Supporting Actress
Filed under: Awards », Fandom »
Best Supporting ActressNominees:
Cate Blanchett -- I'm Not There
Julia Roberts -- Charlie Wilson's War
Saoirse Ronan -- Atonement
Amy Ryan -- Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton -- Michael Clayton
Predicted Winner: Amy Ryan
Gone Baby Gone had surprise written all over it. The first surprise was that Ben Affleck could direct. The second surprise is that Ryan's edgy, emotional performance as a morally mushy mom actually got noticed at the end of the year. The third surprise is that she could actually win. But it's no surprise that Ryan ("The Wire," Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) has been a rising star for some time.

Cinematical Picks: The Golden Globe Winners -- Best Supporting Actor

Best Supporting ActorNominees:
Casey Affleck -- The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Javier Bardem -- No Country for Old Men
Philip Seymour Hoffman -- Charlie Wilson's War
John Travolta -- Hairspray
Tom Wilkinson -- Michael Clayton
Predicted Winner: Javier Bardem
Once in awhile there comes to cinema a character, and a performance that goes with it, that goes on to haunt us for years. Such a timeless villain is played in No Country for Old Men by Javier Bardem. It's the actor's third Golden Globe nomination and will be his first win. How do I know? Here at Cinematical headquarters we were going to toss a coin to find out if Bardem would get the statue. But then we realized that this award isn't about chance (plus we were afraid of getting an air blast to the skull if it came up that he'd lose). Bardem will win because he deserves the award, because his is the most well-developed and most memorable performance of the bunch.

Cinematical Picks: The Golden Globe Winners -- Best Actress (Musical / Comedy)

Best Actress (Musical or Comedy)Nominees:
Amy Adams -- Enchanted
Nikki Blonsky -- Hairspray
Helena Bonham Carter -- Sweeney Todd
Marion Cotillard -- La vie en Rose
Ellen Page -- Juno
Predicted Winner: Ellen Page -- Juno
Although screenwriter Diablo Cody is clearly the "breakout" star of the Juno story, I'm sure she'd admit that without Ellen Page, the movie wouldn't be quite so special. Movie fans first took note of the diminutive gal's talents in the chilling Hard Candy, and the blockbuster fanboys fell for her hard in X-Men: The Last Stand -- but it's pretty safe to say that Juno is her "star-making" role -- and it couldn't happen to a cooler girl. We predict a Globe win, an Oscar nomination, and ... well, let's not jinx the woman!

Best Actress (Drama)Nominees:
Cate Blanchett -- Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie -- Away from Her
Jodie Foster -- The Brave One
Angelina Jolie -- A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley -- Atonement
Predicted Winner: Keira Knightley
The sexy beanpole tomboy has blossomed into a full-fledged heavyweight as a dramatic actress, gracefully inhabiting the soul of an edgy, stylish flapper turned tragic, pining romantic heroine. The Cinematical writers are sold: Keira's time has come.

Best Actor (Drama)Nominees:
George Clooney -- Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis -- There Will Be Blood
James McAvoy - Atonement
Viggo Mortensen -- Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington --American Gangster
Predicted Winner: Daniel Day-Lewis -- There Will Be Blood
Not much of a race here. The Cinematical staff (indeed much of the film-watching world in general) thinks that Mr. Day-Lewis is a dead-solid lock to win the Globe, the Oscar, and even the vaunted People's Choice. (As if "the people" want to see a three-hour movie about oil.) Even if There Will Be Blood (somehow) leaves you cold, there's no denying that DDL's performance is a thing of thespianic beauty.

Cinematical Picks: The Golden Globe Winners -- Best Director
Filed under: Drama », Awards », Oscar Watch », Paramount Vantage »
Best DirectorNominees:
Tim Burton -- Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Ethan and Joel Coen -- No Country for Old Men
Julian Schnabel -- The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Ridley Scott -- American Gangster
Joe Wright -- Atonement
Predicted Winner: Ethan and Joel Coen
No Country for Old Men could go on to win Best Director at the Oscars, but unlike the Academy, the Hollywood Foreign Press will actually recognize both of the Coen Brothers. Everyone knows that Ethan and Joel co-direct their films, but due to Director's Guild and Academy rules, only Joel is allowed credit for them. Therefore their win of the Golden Globe for Best Director will be the better honor. And boy do they deserve it! With No Country, they've delivered a stunning film that exemplifies the two major dimensions of the craft: visual storytelling and management of the acting performances.

Best Picture (Drama)
Nominees:
Eastern Promises
Predicted Winner: No Country for Old Men
It's violent, powerful, beautiful to look at, and it might just go down as the Coen Brothers' greatest film to date. There's no need to flip a coin on this one; Cinematical staff members feel No Country for Old Men is a lock for best picture of the year.
